How can I make a salad more filling?

BertieBotts · 07/04/2014 20:02

I like salad but it doesn't really fill me up much.

I can't eat cheese in any form so that's out. I've tried adding things like chicken, tuna, ham and sometimes boiled eggs which are nice but it's still not really hitting the spot.

Seeds maybe? Bread on the side? Just eat more of it? Grin

Oh and kids ate the same so only one meal to sort

soontobeslendergirl · 07/04/2014 20:28

I make homemade spicy potato wedges with mine and melt a bit of cheese on them while hot and I make prawns in a bit of marie rose sauce to go with the salad - but it's a healthy dinner right? 'cos it's salad? :o

CitrusyOne · 07/04/2014 20:28

Avocado, sliced new potatoes, prawns, croutons?

TheBeautifulVisit · 07/04/2014 20:29

Roasted butternut squash. Hummous. Roasted aubergines. Roasted peppers. Roasted root veg: parnsip, swede, beetroot, red onions, shallots, carrots. Tossed in a beautiful salad dressing, maybe with a lovely vinegars, maybe with lovely fresh herbs.

I often make a salad with steamed broccoli, and steamed salmon with cherry tomatoes and a lemony dressing. You could serve it with some new potatoes tossed in a dressing.

jacket potato? caesar salads are very filling when you eat a bag all to yourself with the best part of a chicken on it

joanofarchitrave · 07/04/2014 20:29

Pumpkin seeds.
Balsamic vinegar (I take mine in one of those mini jam jars for work).

GinSoakedMisery · 07/04/2014 20:30

Sliced boiled new potatoes?
Croutons?

I love salad in the summer.

PedantMarina · 07/04/2014 20:30

Oh dear, JonSnow, you've raused the classic philosophical conundrum. When consuming that salad, which do you eat first?

VivaLeBeaver · 07/04/2014 20:31

Put lentils. The pre cooked Merchant Gourmet ones are dead easy.

TheBigBumTheory · 07/04/2014 20:31

Artandco

That's a 9- a-day saladGrin

mummybare · 07/04/2014 20:33

Sweet potato, avocado, sweetcorn, red pepper and spinach is a nice combo. I have it with a honey and maple syrup vinaigrette - yum!

VivaLeBeaver · 07/04/2014 20:33

Puy lentils even.

rideyourbike · 07/04/2014 20:34

New potatoes, pasta, cous cous?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 07/04/2014 20:34

If you like cous cous you should like bulgar wheat, too. I love that in salads. I like pine nuts on lots of salads as well, they go really well and the texture is less 'worthy whole food' than seeds.

Also, crispy bacon bits.

You did say you weren't on a health kick, yes?

mummybare · 07/04/2014 20:35

Sorry, I mean mustard and maple syrup. Honey and maple syrup would be ridiculously sweet, even for me Grin

NearTheWindymill · 07/04/2014 20:38

salad of dark leaves, cherry tomatoes, pine nuts, cucumber, red peppers, black olives, chicken breast, or salmon steak. Possibly with rice or pasta.

leaves, cucumbers, new potatoes sliced, halved hard boiled egg, black olives, tuna, green beans.

cos lettuce, parsley, mint, chives, cucumber, chopped tomato, yellow pepper, lemon juice, virgin olive, salt and pepper with snipped pitta bread cut in - possiby with a steak.

So many variations.

BertieBotts · 07/04/2014 20:41

You're all making me hungry again. I'm eating Pringles tonight as my salad accompaniment of fillingness (although they're not really helping...)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 07/04/2014 20:41

Ooh, that sounds good, the dark leaves and olives one.

TheBigBumTheory · 07/04/2014 20:43

Ooh, crispy bacon! That's tomorrow's lunch sorted...

NearTheWindymill · 07/04/2014 21:09

Beats a burger down the pub LRD Wink

LineRunner · 07/04/2014 21:12

What are dark leaves? Are they dark lettuce leaves or something I don't know about yet?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 07/04/2014 21:13

True enough. Smile

(Though, mmm, proper home cooked burgers would go nicely with that ...).

I've got that red baby chard stuff in the fridge, I may have to see how that works.

NearTheWindymill · 07/04/2014 21:18

Well I'm thinking baby spinach, rocket, watercress line runner. Also vair, vair nice with some sliced rare lamb leg steak, interleaved with orange slices and some chopped spring onion with some really good warm, dark bread.

ShoeWhore · 07/04/2014 21:23

Great couscous salad from Hugh F-W if you like couscous OP.

Couscous, briefly cooked peas and broad beans, halved cherry tomatoes, lots of chopped mint and parsley, dressing made from lemon zest and juice, garlic and olive oil. Some little cubes of courgette sauteed in olive oil are a good addition too.

LineRunner · 07/04/2014 22:33

Windymill, sounds amazing. I am growing rocket this year but the lamb may have to wait till I get my little rural patch.
