Here's the previous thread where it all began!

EatBetterers are trying to improve the diets of ourselves and our families. No weighing, restricting, calorie counting etc - just finding joy in nourishing ourselves by making positive changes one step at a time. All welcome! :)

At least take away curry is proteinGrin

Actually even though it feels like I had a bad day, written down it doesn't look that bad. It wasn't twenty biscuits and sugary cereal, it was too many sugar free muffins and not enough protein. I'm not going to beat myself up about it too much. Tomorrow is another day.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 07/04/2014 20:48

I think it's a pretty good day to be honest, don't beat yourself up. This is our go-to muffin recipe, we make them in mini muffin trays and I often substitute the eggs for flax-eggs as I eat mainly vegan

Carrot Banana Muffins
2 cups blanched almond flour or almond meal
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon celtic sea salt
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 cup dates, pitted
3 ripe bananas
3 eggs
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
¼ cup coconut oil, melted
1 ½ cups carrots, shredded
¾ cup walnuts, finely chopped

In a small bowl, combine almond flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon
In a food processor, combine dates, bananas, eggs, vinegar and oil
Transfer mixture to a large bowl
Blend dry mixture into wet until thoroughly combined
Fold in carrots and walnuts
Spoon mixture into paper lined 24 cup mini muffin pans
Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes

Sleepwhenidie · 07/04/2014 21:51

I also meant to say Americas, that party food - and the cocktails - sound amazing, definitely don't worry about it, delicious food and drink, enjoyed with friends and in the spirit of celebration, is a real joy in life that we shouldn't ever regret or feel guilty about!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/04/2014 23:09

Is almond meal ground almonds? I've never seen almond flour here, but I can look in the health food shop tomorrow.

fuzzpig · 07/04/2014 23:14

Oil pulling sounds a bit scary to me at the moment :o that's not to say I won't try it one day but TBH, any self care at all is a huge battle for me and always has been, so I'm taking really tiny baby steps with it. Hugely dental phobic as well so I'll just be changing skin care stuff for the moment.

Tried 100% cashew butter today as a colleague brought some in, OMG so yummy.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 08/04/2014 00:22

Yup ground almonds - use as GF alternative to flour. You can grind your own or just use flour of choice

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/04/2014 13:11

I went to waitrose and bought samuk! Chick peas here I come!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/04/2014 14:00

Sumac I mean!Grin

Yum,I made the chick pea and spinach and garlic-delicious!!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/04/2014 14:01

I recognised the sumac flavour a soon as I tasted it. It's really delicious.

Sleepwhenidie · 08/04/2014 14:21

I'm going to try that too. Sounds great. Another article in the press today how beans and pulses can significantly lower cholesterol and we need to eat more Dame you should apply to be their poster girl Grin!

AmericasTorturedBrow · 08/04/2014 14:48

what will you do with the sumac? Thankfully beans and pulses and lentils are foods the DC will gobble happily, they can be a bit fussy over meat though will eat fish, I bloody love them!

meh yesterday was great until the evening munchies kicked in, I am terrible for late night snacking when I'm not even hungry and quite often when I'm full. So yesterday looked like:

Handful of raspberries
1.5bananas
Leftover Peanut Stew with huge bowl of spinach
FOUR (yes, four) vegan chai cookies
Trail mix of almonds, dried cranberries and chocolate chips
several dates
quite a few "tastes" of various picnic foods I made for today Blush

looks ok except I'm supposed to fast on Mondays (not for weight loss, I do believe in the health benefits and it helps me maintain my current weight) so that would have all been great until I cooked those bloody cookies....at least there isn't really anything "bad" in them

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/04/2014 15:00

Sleep- I have another test in 3 months, if it hasn't come down by then then I am not going to worry about it as I am doing everything I can bar tons of exercise and I have mobility problems so that makes things difficult. I'll just tell them to sod off Grin Arf @ poster girl!

The sumac went on chick peas but equally I think it would be good on chicken or fish.

I have sugar free chutney on the hob - will report back later!

fuzzpig · 08/04/2014 18:09

Did a reasonable shop at asda, including a couple of clothes that I needed - another dress size down! :o

They had no cashew butter though :( I'll attempt to find it elsewhere. And almond butter. I'd love to try using it in baking.

Can I join? I've had a read of the thread and it looks like people here eat the way I want to. I need a bit of motivation!

I gave birth 6 weeks ago (DD1). I'm more or less back in my pre-pg clothes (some are a bit of a squeezeShock), but it's not my size I'm worried about at present. I've always eaten quite healthily, and during pregnancy I just did more of the same, but since I gave birth it's been a bit of a disaster. I've not had time to shop and cook so DH has been in charge; ungrateful as it sounds, I've never eaten this unhealthily over a sustained period, and I feel horrible. I'm breastfeeding, so am even more aware of the need to eat well. I'm really starting to feel the tiredness that goes with looking after a baby, and I know it won't help if I go on eating like this.

This week I plan to re-start our subscription to our organic veggie box (on hold since the birth as there's no way DH would have used even half of it), organise a supermarket delivery to re-stock on basics, and cook us a simple meal each day. I'm also going to make sure there are plenty of healthy things to snack on so that when breast feeding makes me ravenous I don't have to grab something sugary because it's all there is.

(Suggestions welcome!)

stilllearnin · 08/04/2014 22:51

dame what you need now is the plenty cook book! I have the veggie version. Great recipes. We had kala chana and orange salad tonight. Broccoli, hazelnut, Tom and feta salad tomorrow. I have actually run out of chick peas (hence the kala Chana). This has never happened before!

stilllearnin · 08/04/2014 22:57

morien congratulations and welcome! I don't know much about breast feeding nutrition (really miss bf'g tho!). You sound like you know what you're doing though and yes you do need to nourish yourself. You need to be organised where you can (healthy deliveries great idea) and also easy on yourself. What do you think to stir fry packs or similar? Do your own seasoning for it. Also if you like cooking maybe make double or two meals at once with a similar base and freeze or pop one in the fridge. I d

stilllearnin · 08/04/2014 22:59

I don't know how easy that is with a new born though!

stilllearnin · 08/04/2014 23:04

americas chai cookies? My ds would like you to adopt him please. Failing that can you give me the recipe (I am going to regret this I know!)

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/04/2014 23:14

Still-I'll look good that cook book, thanks.

Woo hooo fuzz, well done you!Smile

Welcome morienSmile

Bizkit · 09/04/2014 07:32

I've done alright last few days, finally used a tin of chickpeas that I bought ages ago with the intention of making turkey and chickpea meatballs, finally did, they were ok, may need a bit of tweaking.
Managed to prepare myself a prawn salad for today last night, I just mixed prawns with a bit of olive oil, garlic and parsley so dunno how it tastes yet, I've defiantly got a little more energy since I've really started being strict with my diet

I want to try a few things with avocado next

Trenzalor · 09/04/2014 13:21

Hello Morien congratulations!
I've got a nine month old who I am BF and I was the same - trying to eat well so she did! I used to snack on 9 bars, they click in around 22 calories but are really nice seed bars. I always had a bottle of water lurking as well. She doesn't BF nearly asuch now so I'm not so hungry but found she had growth spurts every three weeks during the first three months and I would be starving!

Coumarin · 09/04/2014 17:01

I lost you all!

Serves me right for not posting for a while but I looked everywhere!

Well. Now I've finally find it again, I'm going to make sure I post more regularly. I'm preparing to do ivf again and this time I'm going to be very focused on my eating and health. My consultant says t won't influence the outcome but I'm not so sure otherwise other clinics wouldn't employ nutritionists. If nothing else it'll make recovery easier as the last time floored me for months.

Have been thinking about making my own smoothies. I want an easier way to get extra vitamins and in operate some 'superfoods' like spirulina, chia seeds, bee pollen, that kind of thing. It looks quite fun.

Coumarin · 09/04/2014 17:03

Going to read the thread properly now. Hope you're all doing well still. Hello to everyone I haven't 'met' before. Smile

fuzzpig · 09/04/2014 17:11

Hiya coumarin glad you found us again! I'm sure I've heard that diet has an impact on fertility treatment, if nothing else it'll make you healthier overall and that can only be a good thing!

Trying to steel myself to make a yummy healthy stir fry. Really can't be arsed as work wore me out today but I know it'll be tasty. Have lots of favourite fruits in for pudding too, it'll be tropical fruit salad which we all love.

Does anyone else find it harder to cook decent stuff in the holidays? It's so much easier when I have the house to myself in the day Hmm

Morien hello and welcome! Congratulations!

BFing made me ravenous. What also helped was keeping bottles of water in the fridge and grabbing one at every feed. For some reason it was much more satisfying because it was cold!
