Here's the previous thread where it all began!

EatBetterers are trying to improve the diets of ourselves and our families. No weighing, restricting, calorie counting etc - just finding joy in nourishing ourselves by making positive changes one step at a time. All welcome! :)

Great article. I found some of the stuff in the Michael Pollan book really fascinating, particularly the bit where he talks about the government's and nutritionists' shift from talking about individual foods to talking about specific nutrients so as to avoid bringing the wrath of the big food corporations down on themselves.

And just the whole sciencifying of food - we are all obsessed with the idea of cutting out certain compounds/fats or eating particular nutrients in order to find the magic bullet which will make us thin. Whereas all we have to do really is eat actual normal, real foods. Just not too much of some of them!

I thought I got it. But I actually don't think I really did until I read this book. It's profoundly liberating to realise that I really honestly will never go on a diet again. And that maybe in time I can gradually stop obsessing about my food choices every time I eat anything. Dh will be pleased - he looks very Hmm whenever I refer to my latest theory about what I should and shouldn't be eating!

Thanks for the link.

Wasn't there a series "the men who made us fat" on BBC a while ago, I was sad I missed that as it sounded fascinating.

I caught some of that fuzz, it was essentially about how the demonisation of fat and consequent adding of sugar/sweeteners in its place, plus the explosion in pre-prepared food made us fat and how the diet industry keeps us that way - to their benefit of course!

Cantdothisagain · 21/06/2014 20:56

Interesting discussions here!

I have a fabulous new cookbook - Hemsley and Hemsley, The Art of Eating Well. Made teriyaki sea bream from it tonight with cauli rice and a blood orange and spring greens salad - very delicious. They don't use pasta, rice, and refined carbs but recipes do include quinoa and buckwheat etc, so not low carb exactly, but they suggest not mixing protein and high starch foods (veg) at one meal which is interesting. Recipes are delicious-sounding and tonight's dinner was divine - and healthy. Mmm.

Kids didn't eat with us tonight though... They do eat fish but they like it plain or breadcrumbed.

Where can I buy seaweed? Waitrose I imagine...

fuzzpig · 21/06/2014 21:34

Ohhhh blood oranges, haven't had them for years! (Well, I've had the tropicana blood orange juice but that's not the same is it :o)

Wonder if I'll find it on tesco grocery app Hmm

Off to munch some lychees now. Best fruit ever.

I've just started a thread about that Michael Pollan book. It made such an impression on me that I wanted to tell everyone!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/06/2014 11:25

MorningSmile

Well, it's finally happened,I had a room full of friends suddenly notice I'd lost lots of weightGrin they were a bit perplexed that it can be done without WW or SW thoughWink

I had quite a bad week food wise-biscuits, went out for an Indian, then out at a friends's house. I'd say it was 60/40 rather than my usual 90/10. Didn't stress too much which is good and back on track again now. I'm managing to walk about a mile and a half every evening which is incredible as at Christmas I was hobbling! Makes me feel so much better.

Away from home next week so it'll be lots of marks and Spencer's super salads and fruit from the hospital m and s which is fine by me!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/06/2014 11:25

Lychees are eyeballs in this houseGrin

Sleepwhenidie · 22/06/2014 13:00

Did you tell the friends that not only are you not dieting but you don't know how much weight you've lost because you don't weigh yourself Dame? Their heads probably would have exploded Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/06/2014 13:34

I did! They lost interest at that point, it's all about the numbers apparentlyHmm

Poor deluded thingsWink

Dame - good for you! I am not going to weigh myself either. I have had two meals out this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed them without stressing about whether they fitted in with any 'rules'.

Tomorrow I am going to go food shopping and will buy some really nice meat from our local farm shop and plenty of veg and fruit. I'm thawing out some home made soup for tomorrow's lunch.

One of the other things that really struck me about Michael Pollan's book was when he pointed out that humans used to manage to eat perfectly well without nutritionists or dietary advice. It is amazing and rather sad how hard it is (for me anyway) to buy or eat any food without that little voice in my head asking 'Ooh - should I be eating that?'

kazzawazzawoo · 22/06/2014 21:17

Can I join too? I've just downloaded Pollan's book, thanks for the recommendation.

I have followed the Harcombe way of eating which is basically eating real food, but not carbs and fats together. But I've lost the way and need to just eat real food. I don't weigh myself anyway, it just makes me unhappy and obsessed. Sad

I'm going to read the thread from the beginning now. ..

Letsgoforawalk · 22/06/2014 21:43

Hi. The Spanish chicken was lovely and the roasting tin emptied by the 4 of us. Thanks dame diazepam a fine dish for a hot afternoon eaten outside beneath the blue skies.
Probably too much BBQ food and wine this w/e but also a long walk and a bike ride and some relaxing sunshine. Everything will balance out. Smile
Have not RTFT yet so forgive me if I'm blundering about.

kazzawazzawoo · 22/06/2014 22:16

Sorry if I've missed a discussion about this up thread, but what do you eat when you get in from work or whatever and you're really hungry and just need something quickly that isn't junk?

holmessweetholmes · 22/06/2014 22:50

Kazza - a banana? A slice of wholegrain bread and butter? I like a stick of celery dipped in a bit of unsweetened peanut butter.

holmessweetholmes · 23/06/2014 07:47

I'm finding myself looking forward to going food shopping today, which I don't normally. For me, one of the trickiest things is thinking of healthy snacks for the dc and, in fact, cooking really healthy meals which they will happily eat. They are a lot less fussy than they used to be, but have a pretty limited range of veg they like - salad, corn, French beans, peas and cauliflower.

Anyone got any healthy snack ideas which might tempt a 6 y-o and an 8 y-o?

fuzzpig · 23/06/2014 08:54

I often do crudités with some cubes of cheese :)

OP posts:
holmessweetholmes · 23/06/2014 08:58

Good idea - they love cheese.

Sleepwhenidie · 23/06/2014 11:18

mine love edamame, its the fun bit of popping the beans out of the shells Smile. Do they like nut butter? Delicious on sliced apple or banana. Fresh coconut?

holmessweetholmes · 23/06/2014 11:28

Ds dislikes all nuts unfortunately. Dd loves them though. How do you buy edamame? Fresh? I've seen frozen ones and dried ones... The dc liked the first wave of raw broad beans from the garden, but the beans are a bit tough and mealy now that they aren't so small.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/06/2014 12:02

I've been looking for proper live yoghurt for ages and I've found yeo valley plain, it's lovely! I usually buy Aldi Greek style but it's not live.

holmessweetholmes · 23/06/2014 12:53

Total Greek yoghurt is live, I think. It doesn't exactly broadcast it in big letters on the top of the tub, but I'm sure I checked a while back.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/06/2014 13:25

Yes it is, but I quite like something a but creamier rather than sharp iykwim.

kazzawazzawoo · 23/06/2014 14:00

t Thanks HolmesSmile I don't eat bananas much or bread. Love peanut butter, will try with celery.
