Here's the previous thread where it all began!

EatBetterers are trying to improve the diets of ourselves and our families. No weighing, restricting, calorie counting etc - just finding joy in nourishing ourselves by making positive changes one step at a time. All welcome! :)

Thanks Sleep.Smile I'll give the ff Greek yoghurt a try. Not sure I could move off skimmed milk though as I've been having it for 20 years!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/06/2014 07:54

Full fat natural yoghurt is really low in calories anyway,100 or so in quarter of a big tub so no need to go fat free/ low call.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/06/2014 07:56

It's like avocado-high calorie but essential for health.

I have my second cholesterol check this morning-wish me luck. I can't believe it hasn't come down but I'm quite anxious about it tbh. [worry wart]

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/06/2014 07:59

Sleep-have you seen the thread about you? Smile

fuzzpig · 03/06/2014 09:22

Hiya Teacake! Glad you've joined us :o

Good luck for the check Dame :)

Blush - it's so lovely but I'm pretending I haven't seen it Dame - I knew I should have nc'd before pm'ing Lego about sending some stuff! Not sure what best form is - post on the thread to say thank you or carry on with the eyes shut, fingers in ears 'lalala' approach Confused! Good luck for your check - at least white coat syndrome doesn't affect cholesterol (does it?!)

holmessweetholmes · 03/06/2014 09:52

Feeling so much better after a few days of good eating. I've had sleep problems lately because of acid reflux. It seems to come and go, probably based on my diet, but I haven't fully worked out what causes it. Plenty of veg, lean protein, water and fruit, plus avoiding sugar, refined carbs and fatty stuff seems to be doing the trick though. I fear that alcohol is a big trigger too Sad.

SleepwhenIdie - you seem to be very knowledgeable about these things... I run (slowly!) and have just started doing some weight training too. What level of carbs should I be eating? I find them very addictive and I get hungry very quickly after eating them (even porridge). I definitely lose weight by avoiding them, but then feel deprived and binge. Not sure where the happy medium is. Maybe small portions of low GI and avoid carbs in the evening?

Sorry - long rambly post!

Sleepwhenidie · 03/06/2014 10:06

Most of us here aim to stick to whole food carbs but the white ones (or anything in fact) aren't 'banned'-as you've recognised, that way a sense of deprivation and bingeing lies! If you are eating plenty of veg and small portions of beans, lentils, chickpeas, sweet potatoes you should be getting plenty of carbs to sustain your running. I'd agree that no carbs other than veg in the evening can help with weight loss, but again, don't do it if you feel like you are on a diet! If porridge isn't really keeping you satisfied then try some more protein rich breakfasts, eggs are brilliant, or fish. You should put the focus on protein if you want to gain muscle. Make sure some features in every meal or snack and don't forget that lentils, chickpeas and peas are good sources as well as meat, fish and eggs. If you want some more technical (macronutrient ratio) based info in relation to training I'd be happy to pm but it doesn't really fit with the intuitive eating approach in the thread so much Smile

holmessweetholmes · 03/06/2014 10:09

Thanks - sounds like I'm on the right track then! Felt pleased with myself for having porridge this morning, then was starving by 10 a.m. Protein definitely the way forward.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/06/2014 10:18

Sleep - If you want it to die quietly I would just pop on there and say she's welcome or it's likely to run and run until you see it. personally I'd LOVE a thread dedicated all to me Wink Arf! Wink

I also have an ECG to see if the reaction to the bp medicine damaged anything it shouldn't have - good job white coat syndrome doesn't affect it or I'd be stuffed Grin

I've just discovered stir fries after years of avoiding them as my mum used to make them all the time - delicious and quick!

fuzzpig · 03/06/2014 10:23

I'm enjoying stir fries more now too. Especially now that I've mastered the seasoning with soy sauce and ginger etc. :)

In other news though... Our oven appears to be busted :( really not what we need right now.

holmessweetholmes · 03/06/2014 10:41

Hope your ECG goes fine, Dame. I've been on bp meds for 6 years now (since dc2) and white coat syndrome is a nightmare for me. I get so stressed out!

Right - off to the supermarket to stock up on healthy stuff. I struggle with healthy breakfasts and packed lunches for the dc, I must admit. They want sugary cereal in the morning. I go for the less sugary ones but they are still crap really. The kids hate porridge. Dd will eat (sugar-free) peanut butter on toast but it's hard to get protein into them in the morning. Any ideas gratefully received!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/06/2014 11:19

Oh no fuzz Sad that makes things hard.

holmes thank you, I'm doing ok atm without meds and am just monitoring at home as I have ridiculous readings in the surgery.

Has anyone got any ideas what to do with cod? LIke a healthy sauce or seasoning? It's so cheap in Aldi and so low calorie that I'd like to eat more of it. Atm I steam it in foil with lemon.

holmessweetholmes · 03/06/2014 12:01

Dame - we are having cod this evening. I'm going to defrost a kind of mexican-ish tomatoey beany stew thing which dh made and then simmer the fish in that. I always struggle to think of interesting things to do with fish too, but I thought that sounded nice.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/06/2014 12:44

Ah, that sounds nice. I almost want to make a sauce with it, I might experiment with a mushroom sauce.

ECG was normal, hooray! God it's SO undignified lying there in your bra hoiking up your boob so they can get a sticker on your chest Hmm Grin

Sleepwhenidie · 03/06/2014 21:33

I took your advice Dame, posted a little thank you. Re cod, how about a crust...pea and pesto or similar?

Sleepwhenidie · 03/06/2014 21:34

Oh and that's great news on the ECG Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/06/2014 07:19

That sounds nice, how would I do that? Crush it up and bung it on?

Sleepwhenidie · 04/06/2014 07:38

jamie's looks nice or this one...I like the idea of pesto, pea and pine nuts maybe bound with a bit of Greek yoghurt or ricotta?

holmessweetholmes · 04/06/2014 07:46

My Mexican cod was lovely. Had it with broad beans and chard from the garden. Just had poached eggs and homemade wholemeal bread for breakfast - hoping the protein will stave off the hunger pangs for longer!
Does anyone else have an afternoon energy slump/sugar craving? At about 3-4 pm I have real trouble not reaching for biscuits or something. I lost that craving when I was low-carbing but it is back with a vengeance!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/06/2014 17:14

Thanks sleepSmile

Holmes- if I do I have some fruit like apples or grapes. What about oat cakes with a smear of peanut butter?

My food today was, boiled egg and Bergen bread. Salmon from last night with left over bean sprout stir fry. Just had done Korean pancakes which I could honestly eat all day every dayGrin

Sleepwhenidie · 04/06/2014 18:26

They sound good Dame - did you post the recipe already? If so I will search but if not then please could you?

If anyone is interested in following me, my blog is up and running, I will be posting about healthy living in general, nutritional stuff, self care and recipes (lots of which you will probably have seen Wink.

Holmes I definitely get the 4pm slump. I try and have something fairly substantial as DH and I tend to eat dinner at 8.30-9pm ish. Yoghurt and berries with a few nuts, a hard boiled egg, some feta and beetroot or (new) watermelon, sliced apple with nut butter spread on it, a handful of nuts and blueberries, a roast chicken leg - all usually along with a cup or two of green tea and a couple of squares of dark choc....otherwise I invariably end up picking at the carby part of the DC's dinner Confused! I regard it as a dessert I eat a few hours before my dinner!

Sleepwhenidie · 04/06/2014 18:27

Sorry - that's not linking to my blog Blush - try again brilliant with technology, me

Neeko · 04/06/2014 20:34

Sorry folks. Struggling to keep up as work is so busy and I still haven't read all the first thread. Confused I am feeling more focused by lurking on here though.
Tonight was supposed to be filled pasta and fresh sauce that I bought last week for tea. In the past I'd have wolfed my portion with garlic bread and looked for a dessert. Today I realised that I didn't want to bag myself up with pasta so I had a small portion and a big pile of stir fried veg. Very pleased with myself. Smile
I've been eating nuts routinely for about 6 weeks now and realised today that my skin and nails are much better. Will that be the good fats or just all the fresh fruit and veg generally?
Sleep I am now following you. Smile
