genius/mind-blowing food combinations

About 2 years ago dh and i suddenly became pretty skint.

Now that I've adjusted (it took me a while) i've pretty much nailed the weekly shop and recipes so that we still eat well for roughly a quarter of what we used to spend. We eat a lot of soups, pasta sauces, stews and bulk a lot of things out with carbs so that we don't ... you know... die. (only messin'!)

I had some leftover rice once and threw it into bowl of tomato soup for my DS lunch. He loved it and it's now his fave. My mum then told me how her mother made her tomato soup and mash. Tried. Loved... Actually that might be his fave.

Do you guys have any fave food combos? Please share!

Highbrows it really is very tasty.

notso · 20/02/2014 22:33

Salt and vinegar crisps and white chocolate.

Wotsits on toast,

Dairylea and cherry jam on toast,

Digestive biscuit with goats cheese

Cathcuzz · 20/02/2014 22:34

Salted pretzels dunked in caramel sauce. Oh yes.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/02/2014 22:34

High Brows - red onion, watermelon, feta, black olives, lime juice. Think it might have been a Nigella recipe.

HighBrows · 20/02/2014 22:36

Remus they are most of my favourite things. Yum.

Cor, this thread is making me salivate.

I don't think this is particularly odd but today, in an experimental moment, I made a toastie containing mature cheddar, Philadelphia, ham, spinach and sweet chilli sauce. it was lush.

FloppyPoppyCocky · 20/02/2014 22:54

Sharon- I couldn't decide between marmalade and marmite so I thought, what's the worse that can happen?! My DH thinks I am a weirdo but I have been eating them for about 15 years now!

Also, salt and vinegar crisp sandwich with ketchup and mayonnaise.

Beans with spring onion and ketchup and pickle on toast.

Quite frankly I will eat any combination of ingredients in a sandwich form...with crisps for texture.

fidgetywidget · 20/02/2014 22:54

Yum! Most of these sound amazing! Making me very hungry.

May I add:
Sugar sandwich - must be lovely soft white bread, with butter and granulated sugar. (One of my great-granny's favourites I'm told, so it's been done before)

Peanut butter & honey on toast (not that outrageous but still delicious)

Marmite on toast with granulated sugar sprinkled on top

Atbeckandcall · 20/02/2014 23:15

Don't know if this combo is good because I've only ever eaten it completely shit faced bit here goes: pitta bread, chips, baked beans, cheese and curry sauce.

Mmmmmmm
Also, grilled figs filled with goats cheese (or mozzarella), drizzle a honey and a couple of drops of lemon juice over it, wrap in prosciutto and shovel it in.

ethelb · 20/02/2014 23:21

Dark kit kat and walkers salt and vinegar

worcestersauce29 · 21/02/2014 00:03

daughters school always used to serve crackers with cheese and jam…….before it became 'trendy' seems it's an old flavour combo after all!!

themissuz · 22/02/2014 15:46

McDonalds fries, extra salty, dipped in a McDonalds strawberry milkshake...

flusteredmumto2 · 22/02/2014 15:47

Peanut butter and cucumber sandwich.

Peanut butter, cheese and marmite (my dads fave).

Mashed potatoes, gravy and mint sauce.

Hot mash sandwich. Doorstop bread, butter and salt and pepper.

Chicken and strawberry jam sandwich.

Apple sauce toastie.

Snowdown · 22/02/2014 15:59

My aunts used to eat sugar and dripping sandwiches - salty, savoury and sweet.

GerardWay · 22/02/2014 16:01

Cottage pie and coleslaw.

DumSpiroSpero · 22/02/2014 16:04

YY to Cheddar and mango chutney (especially Tesco Spicy MC).

I've said it before on these threads but cold cauli cheese and hot grilled bacon sarnies on thick, buttered white bread. Yesterday I had cold cauli cheese and southern fried chicken in a wrap Grin .

Chips smothered with mayo, mango chutney & brown sauce.

Blimunda7Moons · 22/02/2014 16:04

@ithoughtofitfirst any pasteurised cheese is ok for pregnant woman :-)

As for the mixt (any) cheese + (any) jam or marmelade or honey, as it is as a dessert or on bread/toast, roasted or not, with or without nuts/walnuts/almonds etc... ITS ALL YUMMY! and it is quite usual in many many countries.

DumSpiroSpero · 22/02/2014 16:09

Once worked somewhere where we regularly sent out for jacket potatoes and quite a few of my colleagues had them topped with cottage cheese, sliced sausage & ketchup.

My MIL is the master of weird combos though - a typical spread when we have a get together at their place will include: roast chicken thighs, salad, baked potatoes, smoked salmon, baked beans, curry, grated cheese, lasagne, hard boiled eggs and over cooked veg.

I think she's probably just trying to cater for everyone's likes and dislikes but when you see it all laid out buffet style it's hard not to go Confused !

rubyflipper · 22/02/2014 16:17

Good-quality vanilla ice cream with crushed salted peanuts on top. Heaven!

StoorieHoose · 22/02/2014 16:21

Tuna mayo with Apple chunks and picked onions mmmmmmm

messyjesse · 22/02/2014 16:24

Sliced beets and feta ::drools::

Housemum · 22/02/2014 16:26

Bread sauce and cranberry sauce in a sandwich (bit of a seasonal one)

I'm another sugar sandwich fan (thanks Nan!)

DH thinks I'm odd because I like pickled onion or beet root with cottage/shepherd's pie (think my Nan started that one for me too!)

Lady I used to know liked bacon and marmalade

I miss the McDonalds hotcakes and sausage with maple syrup - apparently not popular in the UK

shockedballoon · 22/02/2014 16:34

Cabbage (white drumhead type) and marmite sandwiches. White bread loadsa butter.

DumSpiroSpero · 22/02/2014 16:35
