has anyone heard this on the news? apparently coca cola are bottling water straight from the tap. they claim it has a rigorous process eliminating germs and stuff - but the local authority where its based said that was bollocks becuase they do that in the normal process anyway. apparently it costs something like 0.037 p per litre from the tap and 0.99p from coca cola.

cheeky bastards!

Yeah Custardo - It's called Dansai. I bought it a couple of months back and read the label. They are not marketing it as mineral water. It clearly states that it's purified water put through chemical processes to remove chlorine etc and with minerals added.

...it tastes quite nice. At the end of the day most mineral waters have these process down to them. And probably have minerals added anyway.

They've had the balls to admit it and people are flocking to buy it coz it's a 'new concept'! MUGS!

M2T · 10/03/2004 09:06

Oops... I meant to say "had these processes DONE to them"...

I don't see the big problem. They are not hiding the fact it isn't from a 'mountain spring'. How many mineral waters really are?????

And if people are silly enough to keep buying then who cares? And lets be honest have any of you tasted it? I have and it tastes MUCH better than Thames tap water! Although, it's not a patch on the Scottish water.

SoupDragon · 10/03/2004 09:35

But how many people read the label that closely? They see "pure water" and assume it's spring water as it's in a bottle. Yes, if people buy it without reading it properly then they're mugs but that doesn't make it right for Coca Cola to rip people off.

Bet it tastes no different to the water that goes through my water filter.

Marina · 10/03/2004 09:37

It's even selling well round where I live (Twinkie, do you think we should rename our local patch Sidcup les Thermes in honour of our new spa status )
Would they have admitted where it came from if they hadn't been outed in the press?
M2T, how could you say Thames tap water is inferior to Scottish! Some of us like our drinking water so hard it makes our steam sterilisers pack up in weeks you know

M2T · 10/03/2004 09:38

Soupy - But it's hardly comparable to Nestle though.

I buy fresh orange juice when I could easily squeeze my own. You can buy purified tap water when you can easily purify your own. Don't see that they are ripping people off at all.

M2T · 10/03/2004 09:41

lol Marina.

Thye haven't hid the fact that it isn't mineral water though..... so they haven't really been 'outed'. Just that someone stated the obvious in the Newspaper!

Peckham spring wasn't too far fetched all those years ago then was it, Del and Rodders were trail blazers

suedonim · 10/03/2004 13:32

I think the damage to the environment is of concern, though. I saw something about it on TV last week and it uses vast amounts of energy to produce and bottle this water. Plus only 3% of plastic bottles are recycled.

Cam · 10/03/2004 14:25

I was unfortunate enough to have to taste the vile stuff in the cinema recently when I was thirsty ( the only water stocked. It was so disgusting I couldn't drink it - but then I don't drink tap water anyway. Of course its a rip off.

M2T · 10/03/2004 14:27

That's a bit extreme Cam! Water tastes like water.... I thought it was okay. I can't really tell the difference between the different mineral waters on the market either!

What about the Fresh orange juice that is made from Concentrate?? Many people will buy that thinking it's freshly Squeezed juice. Isn't that a rip off too then?

Bugsy2 · 10/03/2004 17:49

Sidcup is the bottling plant for Coca-Cola and Schweppes products in the UK. I imagine they use lots more Thames water to make Coke, Fanta and Tonic water than they do with a relatively new product like Dansai.
Of course it is a ripoff but then the whole bottle water sector is really!

M2T, if water tastes like water, how is Coca Cola's not a patch on Scottish water

150percent · 10/03/2004 19:32

I must admit I did feel a bit ripped off - until recently our gym stocked Buxton mineral water which is what you got if you asked for "a bottle of water". Overnight it changed to Dansai, or whatever it is called. I usually bring a bottle of filtered water from home, but had forgotten so sampled the new one (not realising the distinction). Whilst the Dansai stuff is still water (though the plastic bottle did leave a taste!!!) it is not what I would have bought a week earlier. Apparently Coca Cola used to distribute Buxton, and now they sell this instead, so there'll be lots of people in the same boat - presumably all Coca Cola selling bars etc are in a similar position.

M2T · 11/03/2004 08:20

Pure water tastes like pure water... that's what I should've said Soupy. Obviously hard water tastes differently from soft.

But to say that it tastes absolutely VILE, is a tad extreme IMHO.

Cam · 11/03/2004 14:54

M2t my dd tatsted it too (not knowing it was bottled tap water) and said she couldn't drink it as it tasted so horrid. I think vile and horrid are very good descriptive words (and obviously personal to our particular taste buds). How picky of you to complain about my choice of adjective - I don't agree with you that water tastes like water.

Cam · 11/03/2004 14:55

And if you pick on me again I'll set custy on you!

Twinkie · 11/03/2004 15:09

ooohhhhhhhhhh the bottling plant is not too far from my house!!!

I don't mind that taste of our tap water!!

I can give it to you at half the price Coca Cola doo too!!!

Did you know that some bottles of water cost hundreds of pounds - there was a thing in the observer food magazine last year and this bloke had the job of going round the world tasting bottled water for posh hotels - the best os from the top of some mountain/volcano in somewhere like Fiji!!! Costs a fortune too!!

oliveoil · 11/03/2004 15:32

Load of marketing nonsense, I drink loads of water (as must you too twinkie, 2 litres my midwife instructed, get to the tap) and if I drank bottled I would be far too skint.

Corporation pop my mum calls tap water.

Twinkie · 11/03/2004 15:34

2 litres - I spend enough time weeing as it is - sure weren't like this tillt he end last time!!

sibble · 11/03/2004 18:30

saw a programme once where they now train wine waiters to taste and advise on water to go with food in the same way as wine as there is a difference between them (top eateries of course)- thought it was a bit extreme, having said that cannot drink evian - tastes like peppermint, would rather go thirsty.
we are on tank water and once it is filtered tastes better than any tap or bottle water. I fill up water bottles and carry it around with me.

M2T · 11/03/2004 19:42

I wasn't being 'picky' Cam. I just think in general the reactions to this water being sold are exaggerated and dramatic. And I did say it was IMHO your wording was a bit extreme for describing water!
There isn't really a 'taste' to it as such.
