and do you have "rules" about when/why etc? and - while we're at it - has anyone successfully introduced new rules? esp re childminders or nannies and sweets?

Officially we have a sweetie day on Fridays after school. It does work all right some of the time but holidays and weekends are grey areas and they prefer their dad to pick them up on a Friday because he will go the whole hog and get them crisps and a drink and a comic as well whereas I am usually ean and think that's ott. Mine seem to accept new rules ok if I just tell them what's going to happen with little discussion though they do groan a bit if it's a big change. Will the nanny/childminder have just your kids or others too? Would have thought it would be quite straight forward if the former but hard if there are other kids whose parents might have different rules.

proudofmyboobs · 06/08/2006 19:28

Mine don't get sweets all that often, there is no hard and fast rule, they like sweets and if they're in the shop with me they get sweets or a drink, whatever they want, saying that dd is mad on strawberries so she gets these usually. ds is too young to ask for sweets at 19months but will happily munch a bag of skips or some such thing Sunday is mostly the say we have time to wander round the shops for sweets. The childminder does not give them sweets unless she has okayed it with me first, eg: If it is one of the other childrens birthday and she may be having a party, she will ask me if it's ok for dd and ds to have a few sweets.

Gillian76 · 06/08/2006 19:31

Mine get them every few days, so twice or 3 times a week. Usually I don't buy them, but we see grandparents quite often and they (or others) will give them.

Would like it to be less often if I'm honest.

MarsLady · 06/08/2006 19:31

Saturday is sweet day.

Occasional treats.

Gillian76 · 06/08/2006 19:32

I remember a Topsy and Tim book, Marsy, where they have "Saturday Sweet Day"

Charlee · 06/08/2006 19:33

We have a junk food stash in the cupboard and he gets one small thing after lunch ONLY if i know hes had a healthy breakfast and lunch and im planning a healthy dinner, he usually has low fat crisps pom bears or something like that or he loves fruit flakes covered in yoghurt which at 22 months he considers a 'treat' as they come in sweety looking packets.

We are more relaxed at weekends and he has the occasional naughty thing but its usually pinced from DP!

Tommy · 06/08/2006 19:35

We used to have Friday sweet day
My DSs don't like sweets but do love chocolate. we have some in the fridge to give out as treats - probably 2-3 times a week but I'm so mean that it usually means one mini packet of buttonsd between them!!

LucyJones · 06/08/2006 19:35

none, unless he's at a party or mother and toddlers etc. He's 2.4. It'll change when he starts asking for them no doubt

nikkie · 06/08/2006 20:31

Usually at/after a party (something out of the bag) no set day but if they have done particularly well at swimming (or similar ) they get a treat!

kolakube · 06/08/2006 20:35

None, if she's never had them, she won't miss them.

ocd · 06/08/2006 20:35

every day

hulababy · 06/08/2006 20:37

4yo DD doesn't really like sweets much, but she does have a small bar/packet of chocolate most days, after her dinner in the evening - providing she has eaten obviously. But DD does have a really good appetite and eats a well balanced meal, and loves her food - so the odd bit of sweet stuff isn't a problem IMO.

ocd · 06/08/2006 20:38

thank god hula!!

god yo lot are miserable sods

bosscat · 06/08/2006 20:40

little square of chocolate most days as a reward for eating dinner nicely. they eat the odd lollipop and usually have a bag of crisps on sats and sundays with lunch. no other sweets but they plenty of sweet stuff like ice cream. I don't worry about it to be honest, my dad was a health nut well before it was fashionable and I grew up obsessed with angel delight.

ocd · 06/08/2006 20:41

bet you lot eat LOADS

you gievt hem one measly square and hten scoff the lot
god i MUST keep off food thread
youa re all barking

hulababy · 06/08/2006 20:42

Cod - if she isn't allowed some, how could I justify me having some!?!

A little bit of most stuff in moderation is our rule here, and nothing is banned (well, she isn't allowed Fruit Shoots in my company but that doesn't count surely).

ocd · 06/08/2006 20:43

i a gree wiht you hula

"once a w eek i allow algernon a pea covered in chocolate............"

SlightlyFamiliarPeachyClair · 06/08/2006 20:58

I give tham a bag shopping day officially

but treats like ice cream slip through

As long as you don't go OT- they're only kids once (thank goodness, then they can buy their own choccy!)

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 06/08/2006 21:25

This one always makes me laugh. Its the 'Nanny state' age me thinks

Mine has chocolate most days. After a meal (she has a very well balanced diet, at least 5 a day and no chicken nuggets in our house)

I dont buy pop, biscuits, sweets or chocolates when I go shopping.None of that sugary cereal either. But if she has been good and its after tea we both have a bit of chocolate from the shop.
My mum used to buy us and herself chocolate when she picked us up from school to eat after tea (well over 3o years ago
"No sweets "(but they do slip in at parties) as 'they stick to your teeth' Mum was a chocolholic anyway so I see a pattern repeating.

And when i buy my daughter a bike for christmas, i wont be buying all that protective gear either

so there

FrannyandZooey · 06/08/2006 21:27

Well I throw ds out of the window every morning then give him some radio active waste to chew on

it doesn't do him any harm

you lot are just softies

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 06/08/2006 21:27

and those that said 'none'

Get a life,there kids!!!!

FrannyandZooey · 06/08/2006 21:28

Hear hear chocolate

I'm going to wake ds up in a minute so I can feed him some more crap

Bloody precious middle class wankers

Northerner · 06/08/2006 21:31

Thank god for Cod, Hula and chocpeanut. My ds has chocolate every day and I was reading this thinking I was the only one. I don't buy sweets and haribo's and stuff but he does have them at parties and things. But I always have chocolate after dinner so does ds. I always did as a kid too.

expatinscotland · 06/08/2006 21:34

Every day. I LOVE to bake. In fact, I'm about to go bake right now.

I make fairy cakes every other day, flapjacks, banana bread, ginger bread, pies and when I'm feeling really lazy, tiny tarts from frozen shortcrust pastry and jam from the farmer's market.

I've even got the dried fruit for my Xmas cakes already soaking in brandy.

I also make ice lollies all the time and DH makes ice cream in the ice cream maker.

bosscat · 06/08/2006 21:38

hey northerner I'm one of the choc after dinner gang too!
