Thread for those who are trying to eat "better"

Following on from yesterdays thread "Do I eat too much", which I posted on, I was unsurprising told that what I eat is crap. Have been feeling pretty crap the last few weeks, not enough energy low libido, sluggish, wound up, down - so have decided to see if changing my eating habits can shift things a bit. I'm not overweigh 5ft5, 8st6lbs, (slightly on the heavy side for me), but would be pleased if I did loose a few pounds, trying not to make weight the focus. Have decided to take a vitamin pill with iron every day, last year had v low ferratin levels so had to take iron tablets for a while. I'm not promising to do well every day and cut out sugar completely as I feel that I would be destined to fail. However, I am going to try to I improve. Today have eaten:
1 pack of Belvita biscuits
1 Actvia extra creamy yoghurt
1 large apple
1 Danone (high protein yoghurt)
3 Oatcakes
Some cashew nuts
I am planning on sweet chilli chicken & rice (ready meal cause of money diet) with some stir fried veg for tea and plan to eat some red grapes afterwards. Also may have some sort of a treat on school run. Also aim is to replace the Belvita biscuits with oatcakes for breakfast and maybe eat them with some cheese. Know I'm not doing perfectly but I am making an effort. Buddies welcome.

Oh yes, the chips after swimming were definitely the best.

These were skinny chips from a fried chicken shop.

I have yet to find a proper chippy that does real chips. I am actually salivating now!

I don't like anything labelled 'diet'

I'm just going to try and stick to the clean, unprocessed way (and try and cut out the sugar which I have a taste for!)

My news is that I had the teenager of my French neighbour over for dinner as he is trying to improve his English. I'm in France btw. Made a huge lasagne (as I thought it would be something safe to feed a teenager ) I made my own garlic baguette too.... But only had one slice.

Went to have hair highlighted this morning then met my dh and dd in town for lunch. They had been swimming so were v hungry. Had salmon tartare with green salad which was delish!

I've got duck strips for later... Going to make an orange sauce from my Michel roux sauces book. Might have potatoes as I haven't had any all week .

Rummikub · 29/03/2014 14:22

Can I make salsa with tinned tomatoes?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/03/2014 16:09

I have 3 words to say to you my fellow eating pals-waitrose spelt bread...omg it's delicious and nice small loaf which is good news for me as it's be tempted to eat it all I'm going to chop it up and freeze it.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/03/2014 16:37

Sleep-I looked over at the diet threads, think you were wasting your breath, we're a more receptive crowd hereWink Grin

Sleepwhenidie · 29/03/2014 17:35

I know, often I comment but there's so many where I just sit on my hands and move away, you know nothing will change their mind - it's like a religious cult...although sometimes I expect it's me that sounds like the crazy zealot preaching a new way Blush!

Will try that bread and yes to tinned tomato salsa Rummi Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/03/2014 18:40

I ate loads today but all good food although heavy on the carbs.

2 eggs and slice of soda bread

Waitrose beetroot and spinach super salad, small chicken thigh and slice of spelt bread.

Avocado, green salad, carrot and apple, chopped chicken, roasted beans, mixed seeds, and another slice of spelt bread.

Benecol drink.

Sense the spelt bread theme?Grin

Risette · 29/03/2014 18:51

Like the sound of spelt bread.

Bought some flax seeds today Smile

fuzzpig · 29/03/2014 21:37

Just wanted to say I have decided to do a fish meal twice a week - does that sound doable? I have hardly bought fish lately as the DCs weren't into it but I definitely want to eat more.

I do a grocery order (or shop in person but not often) twice a week so I thought making sure I buy fish in every shop could be my new 'small change' as it's about time I added one :)

I need inspiration for fishy meals though! DS is still quite reluctant unless it's in breadcrumbs :o

All I can think of is cod (or whatever) mornay with the cheese sauce. DS will definitely eat that. Maybe fish pie although they don't really like mash. Or fish cakes

I'm not counting tinned tuna BTW, they eat that anyway and we always have it in the house, and have plenty of possible meals for it - it's just fresh fish that DS is Hmm about. Suggestions welcome :)

Sleepwhenidie · 29/03/2014 22:08

You could do fish pie with sweet potato topping fuzz, would they like that? I always think fish pie is so labour intensive though Smile. I love smoked haddock gratin as an alternative though. Steam a big bag of spinach and throw in a baking dish with some smoked haddock fillets and cherry tomatoes. Chop up some spring onions and mix with grated cheddar, some creme fraiche, lemon juice and black pepper (taste and adjust cheese/cream/lemon as needed). Blob it over the fish and top with a slice or two of bread torn to crumbs and bake for 20 mins, serve with steamed veg, some lentils perhaps...gorgeous.

Salmon with a miso, honey soy glaze, grilled - is delicious with stir fried or roasted veg.

DH did a lovely fish dinner tonight, prawns stir fried with butter and garlic, white wine then marinated sea bass baked and served with an amazing salad of shaved raw courgette, toasted pine nuts, grilled asparagus, cherry tomatoes and shaved Parmesan, dressed with lemon juice and a bit of balsamic.

I'm noticeably smaller, I've had to buy new bras in a smaller size and I'm wearing a skirt that was a bit snug last year and now it's fine. Yesterday I wore a skirt that I can't wear again as it's way to big now. Woo hoooGrin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/03/2014 19:41

Mind you, if I carry on with the spelt bread it'll be my un doingHmm Grin

Trenzalor · 30/03/2014 20:45

Hello, please may I join you lovely people?
It's taken me two days to read over the thread!
I'm trying to eat healthily and mindfully, especially since I became a mum. I am vegan and intolerant to garlic so I don't eat much processed food. However, I have twenty two years as a cheese and chocolate addicted vegetarian behind me which means I am too heavy for my frame.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/03/2014 20:51

Hello Tren, welcomeSmile

Rummikub · 30/03/2014 21:13

Hi trenzalor, love the name.

Fuzzpig, would kedgeree be an option? Or a lovely Thai fish red curry?

I have eaten almost a whole jar of cashew nut butter in a week Shock

Guacamole went down v well with my tinned tomato salsa. I'll make that again, next time without the nachos!

I've not had the shakes this week!

stilllearnin · 30/03/2014 23:04

Hello, I'm going to join you. I seem to be an accidental vegan although I do eat cheese occasionally (trenzalore I hear you!). Our family eats loads of pulses, all the beans, chick peas, lentils etc so shout my way if you need any ideas! In fact my kids will eat anything if i add chick peas! But what are roasted beans? Sounds like something we'd like.

stilllearnin · 30/03/2014 23:09

sleep I've looked at the diet threads and always feel odd about them in a way I can't quite put my finger on. Each to their own, of course. I have dieted in the past but I know it's not sustainable and absolutely know I have to eat joyfully!

Sleepwhenidie · 30/03/2014 23:27

Welcome trenzalore and stillearnin Smile. Veggie recipes always gratefully received!

Rummi that's great you haven't had the shakes, definite change for the better Smile.

Dame I bet you are looking great, not just weight lost but generally glossier and more energised ? is anyone noticing yet?

We've nearly filled the thread up - hopefully we can carry it on but what do you think about getting it moved out of chat and into a topic that isn't deleted after 30 days....is there a need to keep this first thread or not? Confused

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/03/2014 23:34

I've actually looked thinner before when I've 'dieted' and people haven't commented, but I look really well now, hair and nails are fab, skin is fantastic and yes people are noticing. Most importantly I don't feel hungry and I feel more in control as my eating was chaotic to say the least, tbh verging on disorder. Thanks for your help sleepThanks

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/03/2014 23:35

Oh yes please to another thread-don't mind where but would hate to lose you allSmile

Trenzalor · 30/03/2014 23:45

There is useful stuff on here so it'd be good to keep.

Rummikub · 30/03/2014 23:53

Yes please to continuing thread. Don't mind where.

fuzzpig · 31/03/2014 07:35

I've been wondering where we should have the new thread. Maybe in General Health? But definitely not in any of the dieting/weightloss boards.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 31/03/2014 07:58

General health sounds a good ideaSmile
