Come and tell me what to do with persimmons

DH brought home 4 from the supermarket. I'm not sure if he thought they were tomatoes or if he fell victim to some sort of bogof.

Anyway does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you! Smile

They are looking at me reproachfully from the fruit bowl like this Angry Angry Angry Angry

Just wait until they're really ripe and eat them.

LakeFlyPie · 06/01/2014 16:44

Wait until they're really ripe then cut into quarters and eat. Horrid when I ripe, delicious when almost overripe.

PookBob · 06/01/2014 16:45

Are you supposed to eat the skin?

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 06/01/2014 16:46

Aah! Maybe that's where I went wrong last time I had them.
(Was in the early 90's when tropical fruit was CHIC)

PookBob good question. I'm going YES! But this is a guess.

I might try them out on DD first. She is like my own tiny court taster. Wink

Eat them. They are delicious. Pretty much my favourite fruit. I disagree that you have to wait until they are over ripe. they are delicious through a broad range of ripenesses. Eating the skin is fine.

That said for some reason 'kaki' are horrible but 'sharon fruit' are lovely.

kaki are more plum tomato shaped. They do that thing where they dry out the back of your teeth. yuck.

ShimmeringInTheSun · 06/01/2014 16:51

I just trim off the stem bit then chop up the whole of the fruit - including skin - and use in a fruit salad, or eat just on its own. Yummy.
They taste like a cross between a honeydew melon and a peach to me.

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 06/01/2014 16:53

It doesn't say which they are Billy but they are round not plum shaped

Do you mean like when you have spinach and it does that thing to your teeth?

OP posts:
BillyBanter · 06/01/2014 16:54

the first is sharon, the second kaki.

This is why DH is not supposed to go off list.

OP posts:
BillyBanter · 06/01/2014 17:03

not sure why it's showing sharon fruit twice.

Anyway, the more squat ones I love but for some reason the more plum shaped ones I hate.

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 06/01/2014 17:09

No Billy I can see both of them!

Came back to say I tried one today and it was nice! a bit like a mango/tomato hybrid. I gave a bit to DD first and she gobbled it up, given she eats things she's found on the floor this was probably not wise, but on this occasion she was right.

The rest are going in a fruit salad along with mango and stem ginger, lime juice and mint.

Thank you all Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 07/01/2014 20:58

That sounds lovely. So, your DH is forgiven for his mistake initiative? Grin

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 07/01/2014 21:08

Grin Yes errol. Although he still has to have a list!

RazaMeTimbers · 07/01/2014 21:20

oh interested in your stem ginger in a fruit salad. Do you just shave it raw? Sounds delish

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 07/01/2014 21:25

Raza I get the stem ginger in syrup in a jar from waitrose but sure you could get in big tesco etc. too. It's delicious and prob full of sugar but you only need a tiny bit.

I slice it very thinly and will chuck in a bit of the gingery syrup too because i'm feeling wild. Wink

RazaMeTimbers · 08/01/2014 07:42

ah thanks, I know the stuff (love ginger in all its forms). Thought you meant slicing the raw root! Might try that too!

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 08/01/2014 10:45

ME TOO! Sorry, didn't mean to assume a lack of ginger knowledge on your part. Blush

Hmm, maybe I will try the raw idea too.

They love Persimmons in the Deep South. Have a browse of some American food recipe sites for recipes.

Here

They are lovely with chewy Italian or Spanish ham. They can be pulverised and spread onto Victoria Sponges with cream. They suit Creme fraiche, grilled with a little brown sugar and rum. Or any cream topping. I have mashed them into ice creams too. Fatty meat like duck and pork work with them -even sausages!
