Ok, it's for a meal with four of our neighbours plus a quickie for the kids to munch at a separate table. It's a goodbye thing and normally when we eat at theirs they have about 5 courses.

I don't have a large kitchen and no freezer, so it has to be simple. And the food must be available at our local intermarché, so no fancy stuff ok?

I need a starter
Then a sort of startery thing after that
Then a main
Then a dessert
Cheeses ok after that
Coffee I can do

I want to leave them with a fantastic impression of English food, so wow me!

(waits for sarcastic cheese on toast recipes)

Rhubarb - look for merangues near the angel delight and jelly packets, trifle mixes etc. Often sell them as merangue nests.
Alternative one is to use those little italian macaroon biscuity things (nice soaked with amaretto) and mix in with the fruit and cream. Last ditch attempt but not quite as stylish is to use Trifle Sponge fingers, cubed.

Rhubarb · 07/07/2006 20:04

"angel delight, jelly packets" LOL! I'm in France they just don't do any of those things!

French eat lamb very pink - practically still dripping .....

SherlockLGJ · 07/07/2006 20:07

I like my beef mooooooooooooing and my lamb baaaaaaaaaing.

To quote my friend H nothing a good vet couldn't get back up on it's feet.

Carmenere · 07/07/2006 20:08

Figs or peaches, roasted with a splash of booze(port works well), simply served with a spoon of creme fraiche.

SherlockLGJ · 07/07/2006 20:09

Carmenere

Will you stop it.............I am starving and my chinese take-away, just won't match up.

Rhubarb · 07/07/2006 20:11

I shall be on tomorrow to let you know how I'm getting on!

Might not have a table to serve them on though, it's going to be sold I think! Oh well, tv dinner anyone?

rhubarb - France!!! Of course!!
I thought you were in London with a little poncy french style supermarket on the corner not the real deal
Guess you better start practising whipping up egg whites then

YellowFeathers · 07/07/2006 20:12

What about Chocolate Mousse? They're pretty simple to make and once you've made them they can just sit in the fridge till you need them.

I've just thought of another starter idea or an inbetweeny one.

Beef toms, sliced with small strips of Cala Melon. Slice some Goats cheese on top and drizzle with oil and mint. Very refreshing.

SoupDragon · 07/07/2006 20:15

Ah, but Rhubarb, in the earlier post I made I said "pour into individual little dishes (or something like espresso cups) " instead of ramekins, correctly identifying your level of understanding.

Good courgette recipe but maybe too French for the dinner party. Useful if you have any left though.Do a Delia

Carmenere · 07/07/2006 20:19

Sherlock I promise that one day soon I will cook you dinner

fullmoonfiend · 07/07/2006 22:18

'snot a french recipe - actually comes from an english farmhouse cookbook but uses stilton rather than parmesan. Figured she wouldn't stand much chance of finding stilton though. And parmesan works nicely.

Rhubarb · 08/07/2006 14:35

changed this a bit.

Now doing, melon for starters
followed by smoked salmon and rocket salad with olives and mozzerella drizzled with balsamic vinegar.
Roast lamb with potato wedgies and corgettes with green beans fried in butter with coarse grain mustard and garlic.
cheese board
Raspberries and fresh cream.
Irish coffees

whaddya think?

That does sound bloody gorgeous!!!
Can I come and act as chief tester while you cook? (will need to test wine too, obviously, just to make sure it's all pukka)

(this thread inspired me to go and get some lamb for tomorrow so will actually be having very similar main course!)

It went ok! They loved it! The lamb was a bit overdone but we gave them mint sauce with it and they tried it and liked it!

Fecking leg of lamb cost guess how much? 40 euros! That's about £25 to you and me!
