Ok, it's for a meal with four of our neighbours plus a quickie for the kids to munch at a separate table. It's a goodbye thing and normally when we eat at theirs they have about 5 courses.

I don't have a large kitchen and no freezer, so it has to be simple. And the food must be available at our local intermarché, so no fancy stuff ok?

I need a starter
Then a sort of startery thing after that
Then a main
Then a dessert
Cheeses ok after that
Coffee I can do

I want to leave them with a fantastic impression of English food, so wow me!

(waits for sarcastic cheese on toast recipes)

LGJ, technically the recipe is as I stated only just before "pour into ramekins" you add "Eat directly from the saucepan whilst still warm. Then take 250g tup of mascarpone and a 200g bar of chocolate melt ina saucepan and pour into ramekins...."

SoupDragon · 07/07/2006 19:38

And by god it's great warm from the pan...

Carmenere · 07/07/2006 19:38

Sounds perfect to me, really delicious

Rhubarb · 07/07/2006 19:42

Very good point Carmenere! (abt the ratatouille) hadn't really thought. it's a bit coals to newcastle anyway...was just trying to think of ingredients rhub would easily find.

fairydust · 07/07/2006 19:45

the roast lamb and green beans sound fab - but i think the chips spoil it = a garlic potatoes would be nice or new pots in skins

fullmoonfiend · 07/07/2006 19:49

ok, meet halfway and do poatato wedges? (Wedge potatoes with skin on, drizzle with olive oil and herbs, roast in oven for 35 mins.)

fullmoonfiend · 07/07/2006 19:49

god I'm sooo hungry now...wish I was having some of this instead of pizza

SoupDragon · 07/07/2006 19:49

Ramekins - little fluted dishes. Small cups will do.
Mascarpone - poncy Italian cream cheese I think.

popsycal · 07/07/2006 19:50

omg i am going to try soupy's dessert!

now i wil try to think f some easy to do food.....

Carmenere · 07/07/2006 19:52

I do love chips but technically it's kind of difficult to produce fab chips for 6 or more. Much easier to do delicious roast potatoes. What I do at this time of year is simply wash baby new potatoes and roast them(skins on) in a casserole dish with olive oil, sprigs of rosemary, whole cloves of garlic and a scattering of Maldon sea salt. Again you prepare it all in advance and it's one less thing to think about on the night.

SherlockLGJ · 07/07/2006 19:54

Ramekins

SherlockLGJ · 07/07/2006 19:55

Mascarpone «

----------------

A soft, white, fresh, vegetarian, cream cheese from the Lombardy region of southern Italy.

SoupDragon · 07/07/2006 19:56

I was right then. It is a poncy italian cream cheese.

crunchie · 07/07/2006 19:57

Deffo not chips, garlic potatoes, Basically diced potatoes - think 2 cm squares max - loads of olive oil and garlic, roasted for about 45 mins with teh lamb (as they are small they don't need par boiling) Oh and what about redcurrent jelly!! or mint sauce?? How soon is this meal? I'll send you a jar

That will ensure authentic English taste (except don't overcook the lamb, keep it pink)

YellowFeathers · 07/07/2006 19:58

Sorry
Merangues you need to chuck in the oven, hence buying them is much easier.

LemonTart · 07/07/2006 19:59

Rhubarb, don?t make the merangues (can?t spell either!) - buy them, lots easier.
Make up at last minute or merangues will be soggy.
Bash them up first and keep in a plastic bag. Prep raspberries and/or strawberries - slice through and keep in fridge. Have done this with a little good balsamic vinegar and brown sugar to soak but not necessary really.
When ready, just mix up the fruit and cream with the merangues in individual bowls. I use extra large wine glass type things. The strawberry juice is meant to bleed into the cream to give swirly effect.
A nice extra touch I do for kiddies is to add choc sauce over the top. EPC Belgian Choc sauce heated in microwave for quick blast to warm through is very tasty indeed.

Rhubarb · 07/07/2006 20:00

We have a jar of mint sauce!

Ok, roasties then! Although dh says that chips "add", they do not "spoil", but then he's more common than me!

Ramekins indeed! Why don't you just say "small cups"? As fer yer poncey cheese! Well! Errrr, yeah! We're 'aving a cheese board anyway! (must remember not to use the blue cheese as a cure for thrush though!)

This is gonna be good!

Big tomato salad with strips of basil as starter. Buy a couple of extra baguettes and that frozen garlic butter you find next to the herbs in the freezer section of supermarkets (french use it for snails, but tis just garlic butter). Warm bread up with slices of said butter in and serve with salad. Goes down very well in France.

Main: Roast a chicken and cook polenta along side - instructions dead simple and are on packet. Serve with haricot beans with some lardons tossed in.

Buy meringues and make eton mess - if you can find the strawberries. Otherwise crumbles go well. Or nectarines and peaches grilled with sugar and served with dollop of creme fraiche. Or pears served with vanilla icream and choc sauce. Or buy a bloody pudding!

Serve the cheese before the pudding.

Rhubarb · 07/07/2006 20:01

Not seen merangues for sale in our supermarket though.

Just in case they don't, do you have another dessert idea?
