WTF is all this shite food being given to kids? It's everywhere!

I know this has been done in many ways here but I was talking to my mil today about how much crap kids are given ALL THE TIME. It's so sad - am thinking Fruit Shoots as dd managed to get hold of one today at bbq party and was a wreck for the rest of the day. Coincidence? I think not......
But I seriously think some legislation needs to be put in place - these additive-ridden products should be banned.

Never had any problem with my LO drinking fruit shoot, or any other squash type drink for that matter.

charliecat · 02/07/2006 22:50

Or the adults could just not buy it, put them out of business

Blondilocks · 02/07/2006 22:52

I think if they started banning foods then it would become a bit of a dictatorship.

Anyway I'm sure many people consider chocolate to be junk, but there would probably be total outrage if this was banned ;)

dinny · 02/07/2006 22:53

Blondilocks, what's LO?

This was the first Fruit Shoot (and last, if have anything to do with it!) time and dd was being so hyper...

Fruitshoots are the work of the devil.... agree they should be banned.

SherlockLGJ · 02/07/2006 22:54

LO.............Little one...........

Hattie05 · 02/07/2006 22:56

I find if you ensure you give a fruit shoot daily, they soon get used to it enough not to get hyper. Works a treat!

dinny · 02/07/2006 22:56

But chocolate is fairly innocuous, Blondilocks, and high-quality choc is full of antioxidants - what I am saying is zillions of E-numbers are surely harmful and wrong and should be banned, no?

Dinny, look at Sustain they're campaigning to get rid of junk food ads aimed at children before 9pm. Ofcom have just caved. I totally agree with you, the food industry have a lot to answer for imo.

Blondilocks · 02/07/2006 22:56

I've never noticed my LO being hyperactive. Admittedly she doesn't only drink fruit shoot. I guess it just depends on the person (perfectly clear water used to make me really hyper!)

Hattie05 · 02/07/2006 22:56

i'm only joking i promise.

dinny · 02/07/2006 22:56

has anyone seen Sunny Delight's new (paper) ad? UN-bloody-believable. Will try and find link.

Carmenere · 02/07/2006 22:57

I think that anything that is masquerading as natural (ie fruit shoot or sunnyd) should be banned.

WideWebWitch · 02/07/2006 22:57

But careful, if you admit to not feeding your children crap on here you run the risk of being called smug and sanctimonious. I don't care tbh, I don't feed my children crap.

I'm just really annoyed dd managed to swipe a F-S at party (at someone's house) today. Why bother having them around - surely all anyone needs is water, with maybe a splash of fruit juice in for a treat...? Why all this brightly-coloured additive-ridden crap???? ARGH! V annoying.

Chandra · 02/07/2006 23:00

Dinny, you would be surprised, I have child with multiple food allergies that makes me read religiously every single label of each product that I buy and... children products are normally less healthy than regular adults versions of the same thing.

Sometimes I feel like laughing at people cringing at Mc Donalds, if you open the cupboards of the average kitchen you will see soo many products that are as healthy for a child as good all McDonalds can ever be!

Blondilocks · 02/07/2006 23:00

I do think banning things is very extreme. If you don't like it then don't buy it - that's fair enough.

amber5 · 02/07/2006 23:01

blimey, i must be world's worst mum then. my ds (3.4) went off water months ago. i happily let him drink fruit shoot. i figure it's better than anything fizzy and he's never had any kind of reaction to any food or drink.

Chandra · 02/07/2006 23:02

Actually, you can't even have Calpol without a good dose of Tartrazine, and many children vitamines are sweetened with aspartame.

dinny · 02/07/2006 23:02

thanks for link, WWW.

SallyS - think dd may be the same. I have been more relaxed regarding kind of treat foods lately - have been letting her have sweets/choc when offered round at friends' houses but have decided today to stick to a "treats at parties only" rule as I think it's having an adverse effect on her, definitely.

misdee · 02/07/2006 23:03

fruit shoots arent the worst offender though.

today dd1 had a reaction to a additive ridden ice lolly.

amber5 · 02/07/2006 23:04

what age children are we talking about here?
what on earth are you going to do when they go to school or other places without constant parental supervision? they're going to eat unhealthy stuff at some point aren't they?

dinny · 02/07/2006 23:05

but what about peer pressure, Blondilocks?

Chandra - is that the sugar-free Calpol? don't give mine vitamins as they are pretty good eaters on the whole.

OP posts:
vitomum · 02/07/2006 23:06

totally agree WWW and dinny - the food giants have a lot to answer for. And amber5 i really don;t think it is about good / bad parenting. we are all victims of marketing campaigns to some extent. that is why the companies spend millions on marketing - because it works.
