how can felafel be healthy?

can someone answer this for me. lots of smug people have been on about giving their dc this for lunch etc, but felafel is just deep fried lentils.
how is that different from deep fried chicken?

I've come up against this one as well - they're no healthier, but they are vegetarian (usu chickpeas rather than lentils I think), so are often favoured as a protein source by smug non-meat-eaters.

Ledodgyherring · 20/06/2006 16:24

I thought falafel was chickpea patties.

lilibet · 20/06/2006 16:26

I don't deep fry them I bake them

adn they are really gorgeous!

Ledodgyherring · 20/06/2006 16:26

Chickpeas are healthy though, they're a good protein and full of the right kind of fibre and friendly cholestral apparently.

stitch · 20/06/2006 16:30

oh, they are absolutley gorfeous . i love them to bits, just confused by smugness. Grin

Chicken's healthy too - higher in protein than any pulse, low in fat, low in cholesterol if you don't eat the skin. Granted no fibre, but that's what veg is for.

NotQuiteCockney · 20/06/2006 16:33

I don't think they have to be deep-fried.

I think part of the smugness (if there is any?) is because they are "foreign" and hence more interesting/better?

See your point stitch. Chicken is healthy as well but not great deep fried.

moondog · 20/06/2006 16:34

I don't think it's felafel versus chicken.
More like felafel versus luncheable.

Felafel are great but a few too many and one sports an arse like a carthorse.

MrsBadger · 20/06/2006 16:34

this one does Grin

It was meant to be a joke.

Falafel can be fried or baked and contain no animal fat, so although chicken is better than red meat, it's still contains animal fat.

moondog · 20/06/2006 16:37

This is getting completely surreal...

Piffle · 20/06/2006 16:59

I bake mine - I never deep fry anything
we adore them with pitta bread, salad and chili sauce

stitch · 20/06/2006 20:23

OP posts:
Cod · 20/06/2006 20:25

i cna tell you as a cholesterol queeen that they are high in GOODfat

JoolsToo · 20/06/2006 20:27

I haven't a scooby what felafel IS!

Bozza · 21/06/2006 10:03

So what is wrong with the animal fat found in chicken? Especially for children who should not be on a low fat diet?

MrsBadger · 21/06/2006 10:39

Nothing wrong with animal fat in moderation - never sure why people mix up the healthy eating advice for fat adults with the healthy eating advice for growing kids.
