No smugginess, no social commentary or judginess.

I want EVERYONE'S go to, cheapest stand by meals that they use, on one cosmic, love in thread of sharing and nicety.

Lets help each other out with a bit of inspiration.

I had forgotten all about hot dog pasta - had loads of it as a student. Also used to have it in a rice dish ( like the kedgeree above). Veggie burger stir fry - cook and chop up the veggie burgers ( the soya protein type) and stir fry with what ever veg you have, serve with rice and lots of soy sauce.

Chicken livers are great if your kids will eat them (sadly mine complain) about 50p a pot. Chicken liver risotto tastes really good, can also use them in pasta sauce. Veggie risotto is another good one for using up veg, lots of cheese on top.

Great thread. Lots of pasta dishes, Aldi 19p pasta is great and would make these really cheap meals.

Pasta, tuna, sweetcorn, mayo. Perfect dinner!

Oh, I've just thought of one of my mums

Get a box standard plate.
Put raw bacon (3 strips) round the edge, overlapping each other
Crack an egg in the middle
Cover in grated cheese.

Put the whole thing in the oven for about 20 mins.

Sounds revolting, but is actually quite nice. I made this once when DD and DH were away and I couldn't be bothered to cook for one, took me right back to my childhood!

TeWiSavesTheDay · 28/08/2013 11:41

I was going to say Honey - once the thread is full it'll need moving to food or wherever to stop it going poof in chat. I want to have a good look through it and write lots down!

From when we were little- old school salad plate:

Slice of buttered bread
slice of ham or a boiled egg
whatever salady stuff you have around the house - lettuce, carrot, cucumber, beetroot, tomato etc.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/08/2013 11:59

I made this the other day (didn't bother with the spinach balls). Used Basics parmesan-esque stuff and about half as much butter and cheese as the recipe calls for. Lovely.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/08/2013 12:00

TeWi - you've just reminded me of one of the things I loved best as a child.

Boiled new potatoes
A hard boiled egg
Lettuce
Cucumber
Tomatoes
salad cream
a Dairy Lee triangle
All laid out on a plate. :)

HoneyDragon · 28/08/2013 12:50

Yes. If I can get it filled in chat for traffic I intend to as HQ nicely to move it to food x
Thought it best here as not many people hide chat Grin

Cheesy pita bread.

This is really nice and easy to make cheaper. The original recipe I had used feta and sausages which is lovely but really filling and not really necessary.

Chop up a bunch of veg to roast into inch size pieces - can vary for season, eg pepper, onions, tomatoes, or squash, carrots, courgette.
Put them in the oven in a baking tray for 30mins at around 180dc, with some oil and seasoning.
Chop up feta or some cheaper cheese into half inch chunks. take tray out of oven and sprinkle cheese on top, then roast for another ten minutes.
Toast pita bread.
Open up the pitas scoop the cheese and veg inside and eat!

HurricaneWyn · 28/08/2013 12:58

Pasta Bake
Tomato Sauce made with basics tomatoes, garlic, onion & dried oregano, mixed with frozen sweetcorn and frozen spinach. Put into a oven dish & top with cheese and bake until cheese is golden. Can add chicken/quorn pieces if there's any knocking around. Serve with cheap garlic bread.

EnjoyEverySandwich · 28/08/2013 13:21

Marmite Pasta

Cook pasta.
Melt some butter and stir in some Marmite to taste, with a little of the pasta water to loosen it.
Stir into pasta.
Add Parmesan (or other grated cheese) to taste.

Job's a good'un.

QueenofallIsee · 28/08/2013 14:10

Mince and potatoes

fry onions til soft
brown mince, drain it
bung in 2 oxo cubes
frozen peas
cube of carrot

leave it alone, make some mash potatoes and serve it

BKKate · 28/08/2013 14:14

Home made beef burgers, fry an onion, add to some mince with some herbs/chilli/ whatever's in the pantry. Soak two pieces of bread in milk squeeze out the milk, chop up and add to the mince mix. Crack an egg in and mix again, form into burger shapes and cook on the George Foremam grill in about 10 minutes. Serve with bread rolls if you have them, if not we like sliced bread cut in a circle.
Chips or salad.
Lovely and moist and feel quite healthy if you use lean beef. Sounds like more effort than it is, I usually make the burgers during dc's nap time and stash them in the fridge until tea time.

BKKate · 28/08/2013 14:21

Queenofall my MIL makes mince a bit like that, but with a side of packet macaroni and cheese, Kraft I think (she's in Australia), it's lush!

MackerelOfFact · 28/08/2013 14:24

This is my easy fridge dinner: mediterranean roasted veg and sausages.

Chop up whatever sad-looking veg you have to hand - courgettes, mushrooms, sweet potato, peppers, onions and tomatoes all work well, but anything roastable is fine.

Stick in ovenproof dish. Drizzle with olive oil. Add optional rosemary, garlic and olives.

Bung some sausages on top of the veg.

Cook at about 180C for about 40 mins, turning sausages and shaking veg halfway through.

Serve with salad and either couscous or pitta bread. Or anything really.

Also works well with chicken thighs or halloumi and chorizo in place of sausages.

MackerelOfFact · 28/08/2013 14:25

Oh mine is basically the same as TeWiSavesTheDay's!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 28/08/2013 14:27

Chickpea surprise. (the surprise is, there are chickpeas in it).

Onion, red pepper, tin tomatoes, spices, any other random veg that needs using up, plus chickpeas.

serve with couscous.

My boys really like sweetcorn fritters - pancake batter, add a tin of sweetcorn before frying in small blobs.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 28/08/2013 14:29

Grin mackerel - there's a few variations on here! Quite useful really, hadn't thought of doing it with halloumi or chicken!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/08/2013 14:33

Courgette fritters -

Finely dice a couple of courgettes (ditch the seedy bits). Shove in a bowl and add flour and egg to mix into a solid-ish paste. Add diced feta (Basics). Add pepper and herbs if you have them.

Fry in little patties.

CatThiefKeith · 28/08/2013 15:11

This thread is brilliant, but needs moving op, otherwise it'll disappear before we get to try all the brilliant recipes! :(

EldritchCleavage · 28/08/2013 15:15

Corned beef hash/stew:

Cook one large onion until soft, then add 1 tin tomatoes and 1 large tin corned beef cut into cubes. Add 1/4 tsp hot paprika and a bay leaf, cook gently for 10 mins so flavours combine. Serve with boiled potatoes or rice.

wheretoyougonow · 28/08/2013 15:16

Tomoato soup and hot dog.

Cheesy mash.

Pasta and sauce.

Jacket potato with anything

I'm hungry now...

EldritchCleavage · 28/08/2013 15:18

Oh, and meatloaf:

mix any minced meat you like with:
1 egg
dried herbs
small amounts of finely minced onion, garlic, celery and carrot
add 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs if desired
cook in a loaf tin in a medium oven for about 40 mins

paneer · 28/08/2013 15:24

Eggs in purgatory

Fry grated garlic clove and some dry chilli flakes in a small frying pan
Add in a tin of chopped tomatoes and cook for 4 mins
Season with pepper
Crack in an egg and cover the egg with grated parmeasan
Cook until the egg is to you liking (I usually cover with a lid
Egg straight from frying pan to save cleaning

paneer · 28/08/2013 15:26

Thai 'style' curry, using any veg you have left over and meat you want to chuck in.

Fry in a large pan chopped onion
Brown meat if using
Chuck in the veg and fry for a bit
Add a tin of coconut milk
Big squirt of lemon grass (the stuff from the tube)
Cook until all veg are soft/meat cooked through
Add in fish sauce and soya sauce to you liking.
