If you have any recipe ideas I would really appreciate them. Thanks!

Yes, simply pop a little pork chop on the side. Smile

Trazzletoes · 07/02/2013 06:58

Not a chance! But then if complain if he cooked it for me! I think it tastes horrible.

Plus I don't really understand the point of it.

mameulah · 07/02/2013 07:04

Ninja - Great idea, thanks!

Trazzle - I am trying really hard to lose weight and get us fit and healthy, thought the quorn thing might help us cut the calories.

Depends on the DH. Mine has been happily eating it for years. Can't comment on yours.
Quorn chilli is probably the nicest thing I do. You need it nice and spicy because otherwise Quorn can be fairly bland.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 07/02/2013 07:09

Agree with Trazzle I'm afraid, I'm sure he would complain but so would I, I'd rather have a smaller portion of meat mince.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 07/02/2013 07:13

Eating quorn in place of mince really isnt losing enough calories to aid weight loss. I know they say it on the ads but, well, they would wouldnt they?

Its vile stuff. Just have the mince. Drain off the fat. Protein is good for weight loss.

Bunbaker · 07/02/2013 07:14

Quorn doesn't cut the mustard for OH. He doesn't like the taste or the texture. What I can recommend is that you either use turkey mince or stick to other mince and stretch it out with some lentils.

I make this a lot, and it always goes down well in the Bunbaker household. The recipe says green lentils, but when Nigella made it on TV she used red lentils, and that is what I use.

mameulah · 07/02/2013 07:19

Bunbaker - That looks great, what do you serve it with? Rice?

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 07/02/2013 07:35

I usually serve it with spaghetti, but you could have rice or a jacket potato. I do a salad as well.

Trazzletoes · 07/02/2013 08:07

I would definitely go with any meat mince and discard the fat. Turkey mince is good and comparatively cheap, as someone else has said.

But I am a bit funny about food - I enjoy eating and so want to be able to enjoy the taste of my food and Quorn just doesn't cut it for me.

shrimponastick · 07/02/2013 08:11

No one would dare to complain in my house ;)

Quorn works best I think, as a chilli. It nedds lots of extra flavours.

However if you aren't veggie, turkey mince is low cals/fat and tastes better. As the above poster...

CMOTDibbler · 07/02/2013 08:49

dh and I both like it, though dh prefers tvp mince

LRDtheFeministDragon · 07/02/2013 08:54

Well, he's mastered the use of cutlery all by himself now.

But yes, he like quorn sausages and so on. I don't mind them.

memphis83 · 07/02/2013 09:02

My dp ate it for years in a chilli without knowing and now prefers it. I don't like it as a cottage pie as not enough flavour.
For a chilli I add onion and tomatoes snd the spices and let it reduce down so its a really rich sauce but then add the mince for last 20 mins or it can be a bit spongey.

somuchforanindiansummer · 07/02/2013 09:06

Sorry to be a killjoy, but wtf is this with the 'ooh men must have meat'? And 'complaining' about what they're fed...? Feck, that would happen once in this house Grin

Trazzletoes · 07/02/2013 09:17

Who is saying men must eat meat? No one!

Some of us are saying that we prefer meat. When I say my DH would complain, he actually wouldn't because I wouldn't cook it for him leaving aside that he cooks chez Trazzle why would I purposefully prepare a meal I know he wouldn't like? (As I said, I wouldn't enjoy it either so it's a moot point) but I don't think anyone is saying that they regularly prepare Quorn and that their DP throws a hissy fit and demands meat, are they?

Bunbaker · 07/02/2013 10:21

OH will happily eat vegetarian food, but he just doesn't like Quorn, just as I don't like parsnip.

somuchforanindiansummer · 07/02/2013 10:47

Fairynuff, but the question was explicity 'can you feed your DH quorn without him complaining', which very much implies that as a man he would object to having a meat-substitute

As you were, I just came over all humourless

Bunbaker · 07/02/2013 10:51

I know a lot of people who happily eat non meat meals without complaining, but who dislike fake meat. I'm not a particular fan, but will eat it.

nipersvest · 07/02/2013 10:56

we had a problem with mince before dh had his gall bladder out, tried quorn mince but no-one, not even me, liked it. texture was spongy. we're using turkey mince instead now, although when dh was away i did used beef mince, now realise how much i miss it, but dh still can't eat it without bad indigestion.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 07/02/2013 10:59

Yes, because he's a vegetarian, like the rest of us. We usually have a quorn-based meal about once a fortnight.

Trills · 07/02/2013 10:59

I don't feed stuff to my DP, he feeds himself.

Do you mean can I cook it and will he like it?

No, because it's much less nice than real mince.

Turkey mince is not very nice either.

A friend once cooked a quorn mince lasagne, saying "you can't tell, can you?" Yes, we can tell. We were just being polite by not mentioning it.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 07/02/2013 11:01

Recipes: I use bean feast Bolognese mix in either spaghetti Bolognese or a cottage pie. I have never tried any other type of quorn mince.

notso · 07/02/2013 11:05

He wouldn't notice too many years of MILS cheapo nasty mince but I would it is vile.
The quorn 'chicken' pieces aren't bad but only if you over cook them so they are not so soft.
Try doing Slimming World it really works.

notso · 07/02/2013 11:07

Grin have also done this.
