LUNCHTIME BBQ party..........would you expect beer and wine?

RTKangaMummy · 05/04/2006 16:14

Would you take a bottle of wine or beers with you?

It is my 40th birthday in July and we are having a BBQ and trying to work out numbers for the caterer

we have:

33 adults,

6 teenagers,

10 children {around 10 years old} and

8 babies or small children with little appitites

It is in July for a lunchtime BBQ

I don't drink alcohol and hopefully some of the adults will NOT be drink driving so won't drink either

DH says they will want wine but I am not really sure

But what would you provide?

TIA

So, 12(?) bottles, 9 white 3 red? As there are always awkward people like me who don't drink white wine.

I was going to suggest some champagne or something similar to toast your day, but if you don't drink.......

Norah · 05/04/2006 16:33

Ooooh - tricky !!!

Being as it's summer you want light and fruity really - but some wine snob will come and say that you want x and y - I am so not a wine snob !!

We usually get a mixture - some very light and common-as-much ones - ie. Frascati a few Pinot Grigios, I love Italian Orvieto, also a few Chardonnays. Reds I don't know as I am a white drinker but dh likes a Merlot and Shiraz !

Beers - dh likes the Real Ales - in bottles - like Old Speckled hen, Old Peculiar etc - and Lagers we usually get a load of those little French biere things - Tescos do them !

rofl at your naivity, kanga! (is naivity the word? something anyway).

I could tell you my fave beer but it's not most people's - can you ask some of the guests? I bet many bring some anyway, but just in case get a dozen or so small cans of Kronenberg or Holsten (because not many people object to those. I'd say stella, but dh is allergic to that). Saying that, no-one will object if you get a dozen cans of Aldi 10p-a-can german beer - the germans have laws about what you can put in beer so you can't go wrong.

wine - get the cheapest spanish red you can find. it's a waste to try and get something more expensive if you don't drink wine and I've never had a bad one. I don't think I've ever had a bad australian red either.

Feistybird · 05/04/2006 16:41

btw, wouldn't dream of turning up without bringing a bottle (you are inviting me aren't you?)

I tasted Gallo White Zinfandel (which is rose, not white!) for the first time the other day, Kanga, and it's very good and would be really nice at lunchtime for people who normally prefer red or white, iyswim.

IMHO obviously Grin

Bozza · 05/04/2006 16:43

For wine I would go for what is on offer. For lager I would be tempted to get stubbies rather than big bottles - might go further. For bitter not really sure.

LaSenora · 05/04/2006 16:44

...also get some lemonade in so people can have "tinto de verano" (red wine and lemonade). It's v refreshing.

LaSenora · 05/04/2006 16:45

Just don't get bitter would be my advice - bitter drinkers are fussy (and I know cos i am one)

serenity · 05/04/2006 16:45

I make my sister buy wine for me as she used to run a pub, and sort of knows what she's doing (far more than me!)

When we buy beer for a large gathering, so more than just close friends and family we get the Tesco or Sainsbury's french beer too. Dh seems to think it's drinkable. If it's more intimate I'll splash out on bottles of Stella or (I think) Kronenberg 1664 - I don't drink beer myself.

I think if you go to any place like Threshers or Majestic they'll be able to recommend wines within your budget, and I've heard they are pretty good.

scienceteacher · 05/04/2006 16:45

I would take a couple of bottles of wine...would sort of expect the hostess to have a contingency, especially beer, but would also expect her to 'profit' by the end of the party.

Milliways · 05/04/2006 17:09

I have a nice recipe for a non-alcoholic punch with a kick (has ginger beer & lime in) if yu want me to dig it out?

Ok - Alcohol free Punch:

2 litres decent Orange Juice
2 litres Grapefruit Juice
2 Litres Lemonade
1 Litre Orangeade
1 Litre Limeade
1 Litre Ginger Beer (Fiery )

Mix together in large bucket! Can float fruit in if you like but we don't bother. Find this popular with non-drinking adults as has a bit of a bite, but young kids don't like it.

Milliways · 05/04/2006 17:29

I am 40 this year as well - but we decided to go and stay with Bubblerock at Blackpool :)

RTKangaMummy · 05/04/2006 17:31

Deffo brill thanks for that Smile

Which type of ginger beer?

We use Sainsburys Fiery (but not always in stock. Their bog standard stuff is useless). Otherwise the Jamaican Ginger Beer that they stock is very good (but more expensive).

We always leave Ginger Beer out at parties - it's surprisingly popular (again as diff. from edless coke & OJ)

RTKangaMummy · 05/04/2006 17:35

oh I didn't realise fiery was a type of GB Blush
