Erm, I have had an internet shopping fail and now have 1kg of wholemeal plain flour and 1kg of wholemeal self-raising which need to be used in the next month. Help!

A bit of a challenge!

I really only use flour for sauces and cakes. I have done pastry in the past but am a bit rusty. Have never made bread; don't have a breadmaker.

What on earth can I do with this flour? Any ideas for things I can freeze?

Shall I just put it on freecycle?! Grin

1kg of each you say? And it goes off next month? Goes off where I wonder?

Mine's still all here and it's at least a year out of date. I shouldn't worry about it going off anywhere in a hurry OP.

Helpful and snarky Grin

Cakes/buns/brownies. I have some low sugar ideas on my blog www.toddler-recipes.co.uk. Tbh though I don't think you really need to worry about using them up within a month, it won't go 'off' as such, should still be fine to use.

I bet your flour has got weevils ladyemma!

Pizza bases, cheese scones?

IHeartKingThistle · 11/09/2012 18:27

CHEESE SCONES. Mmmmmmmm......

Can you freeze those?

What cakes use wholemeal, mrsvilliers?

How vairy dare you notwoo. My flour is stored in the very finest lock and load and lock flour storage containers, designed expressly for that very purpose.

My flour is, in fact, not years old, but I couldn't resist teasing the OP for undue worry about the best before on what is the very epitome of a store cupboard staple.

mrsvilliers · 11/09/2012 18:39

You can use wholemeal in muffins or banana bread for example. It's supposedly healthier although I have to confess I only ever use white as I can't really be doing with four different lots of flour.

PurplePidjin · 11/09/2012 18:41

Crumble topping

Cheese scones

Carrot cake

Apple cake

notwoo · 11/09/2012 18:51

But you'll be locking the weevils in ladyemma Grin

MaureenMLove · 11/09/2012 18:53

Make harvest festival salt dough things! Grin

LadyEmmaHamilton · 11/09/2012 19:02

Aksherly, my mum had a bit of a weevil infestation and as a result I am on constant weevil watch. Hence the lock and load.

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 11/09/2012 21:26

Freeze the flour. Put it in plastic bags first.

GOLDdebka · 11/09/2012 21:28

Soda bread. Easy and gets you domestic goddess points.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 11/09/2012 21:31

make carrot cake
it will freeze un- iced

IHeartKingThistle · 11/09/2012 23:34

Anyone know if I can substitute the buttermilk in soda bread for something non-dairy? Long shot!

OP posts:
Lolwhut · 11/09/2012 23:51

RaspberryLemonPavlova this.

Freeze the flour in pre measured amounts.

Imnotaslimjim · 11/09/2012 23:54

Iheart, for the buttermilk, mix a tablespoon of lemon juice with whatever milk you usually drink - the lemon juice will curdle it, and it will resemble buttermilk enough to replace it. I tend to do that with normal milk if I can't be bothered don't have time to go to the shops

CelstialNavigation · 11/09/2012 23:58

You can make crumble mix and freeze it

Oblomov · 12/09/2012 06:54

Why can't you return it? Phone them and say you made a mistake on quantiites order. You won't be the first to do so, I'm sure.
And why would any flour you have just purchased have such a short shelf life?

notcitrus · 12/09/2012 10:03

Pancakes, scones, crumble, Apple or banana bread... and it'll be fine in an airtight tin or bag for a year or two.

dinkystinky · 12/09/2012 10:09

Ok - check at your DC school if they want to run a cooking class and donate as much of it as humanly possible!

Failing that, ask on freecycle for breadmaker or borrow one from a friend and use the breadmaker 24/7 and start a cottage industry would be my suggestion

randomfennel · 12/09/2012 10:11

It doesn't go off that quickly. I clicked on the wrong button last year and got 16kg of wholemeal bread flour. It's still going strong. No weevils.

TheBrianRogersConnection · 12/09/2012 10:23

You can't return it, it was an error on your part rally but isn't that just a normal sizd bag of each? Why is the use by so short, my new flour has ages on it. That's why you should get a refund!

TheBrianRogersConnection · 12/09/2012 10:23

Sorry for typos, my lappy is playing up today
