Need breakfast ideas for work

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 10/09/2012 09:58

My current breakfast is to grab a granola bar as I dash out of the house and then eat it when I get to work at about 8am.
I'm conscious its not good though - as I tend to be starving mid morning and desperately clock watching till lunchtime.

Can anyone recommend a better breakfast - I don't have access to a microwave or kitchen so something like porridge is out, and I'm already leaving the house at 7 so I don't want to be getting up any earlier to make a breakfast at home.

Any ideas on something portable I can just take and then eat when I get into office - I have time in the evenings just not in the morning. Ideally I want it to be healthy and help stave hunger pangs till lunchtime so I'm not tempted by the chocolate machine.

Thanks if anyone can give me some ideas to consider...

You could make a Spanish omelette on a night, when it's cooled slice into 2/3 wedges and store in the fridge. Then just take a wedge each morning.

Invest in a cool bag and you could take things like yogurt and some washed fruit.

TotemPole · 10/09/2012 10:27

You could also take things like sandwiches and make them the night before.

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 10/09/2012 11:06

This is why Mumsnet is good - I hadn't thought of sandwiches for breakfast but would work perfectly for my way of eating...
Wholemeal sandwiches with either peanut butter, nutella, or butter & marmite could be a regular easy breakfast...
Plus every so often make up some omelettes the night before - that is a fab idea... in fact I am sat here checking the thread with a rumbling hungry tummy!

Egg Mayonnaise sandwiches, made the night before are a good, filling portable breakfast.

charlieandlola · 10/09/2012 18:02

I take philly and ham sandwiches or cheese and marmite . Always feel better with a bit of protein at breakfast

Don't forget the humble banana - also buttered ryvita with mashed banana is yummy.

brass · 10/09/2012 18:07

meusli/cereal in a tupperware with chopped fruit and raisins. Milk would be a problem though if you have no kitchen. What do you do for drinks all day? Perhaps you could take a small carton with you?

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 10/09/2012 18:08

Do you know how much I wish I liked banana!!! As DP says its a superfood in its own container!!! Unfortunately it makes me gag and I can even spot small amounts in a smoothie Sad
I might alternate the omelette with a pot of egg mayo, or a cold boiled egg. Eggs are a fab breakfast and we often have them (scrambled, fried or poached) at the weekend, but I hadn't thought laterally about cold versions in the wek.
Plan of action is in place!
For tomorrow we have bread and peanut butter - so guess what I'll be making tonight!

Croissant with cheese and ham (again, put together the night before).

I have seen porridge pots that look like pot noodles at M&S, I assume you just add hot water.

Trills · 10/09/2012 18:09

Or make your own flapjacks or breakfast bars.

Sam100 · 10/09/2012 18:13

Go German and have rye bread, slice of ham and a slice of cheese. It will take you most of the morning to get through a slice!

CMOTDibbler · 10/09/2012 18:18

Get yourself a little food flask, then you can easily make porridge and take it with you (pop porridge oats and dried milk in the night before, then just add boiling water in the morning), or cold milk and tip a bag of museli/cereal (make up little plastic bags with added dried fruit or whatever at the weekend so you can just grab and go) in.

I like hardboiled eggs on ryvita - again, those could go peeled and sliced in the flask the night before and stay in the fridge until you go

Trills · 10/09/2012 18:19

CMOT shouldn't you be suggesting sausage inna bun? :o

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 10/09/2012 18:19

Brass - the milk thing is the problem really which is why I discounted cereal. Even though the office is hot desk (no drawers) but could theoretically be done with a separate container for milk, mix at work and wash up in toilets (no kitchen) I think it would be messy.
I probably should take fruit/raisins anyway though as better snack options, so that if I feel hungry I go for them rather than something out of the machine!

A friend of mine has Bircher muesli which she makes the night before by soaking oats, raisins, nuts, a grated apple in some apple juice and adding yoghurt in the morning. A bit of a gaff, but delicious and filling

Sephy · 10/09/2012 18:20

*faff / pfaff

CMOTDibbler · 10/09/2012 18:24

Well, that is the breakfast of kings Trills (or a soy rat onna stick), but hard to get inna flask

ethelb · 10/09/2012 18:39

I thake this: www.cookcraft.co.uk/storage/sistema-containers/breakfast-to-go-pot-530ml-blue.html?source=googleps&gclid=CLWenufGq7ICFc93fAodWXsAiQ

I put yog in the top and museli in the bottom. Sometimes some berries or chopped up fruit.

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 10/09/2012 20:23

ooh now that little container looks good...

Thanks everyone for all suggestions and options. Will be starting tomorrow with the peanut butter sandwiches!

I sometimes take some granola, with natural or vanilla yoghurt on top and a handful of frozen raspberries. The berries keep the yoghurt cool until I get to work.

Xiaoxiong · 10/09/2012 21:58

I've just made a batch of bran muffins, using yoghurt instead of milk/butter, sweetened with a little maple syrup and with shredded apples, blackberries and seeds mixed in. Stored in Tupperware to keep fresh, and that's the week's breakfasts to go for DH and me.

I've just found out you can prepare a week's worth of breakfast burritos and freeze them - defrost one by one in the microwave with a damp piece of kitchen towel and they're good to go. Maybe that will be next week's project.

mckenzie · 10/09/2012 22:40

was there a particular recipe you followed for the muffins? if so, please may I have it? Smile

brighthair · 11/09/2012 00:53

How about these?

Yay for CMOT and trills, that cheered me right up

sashh · 11/09/2012 01:17

Continental type breakfast, hard boiled egg, ham, bread, cheese.

Kippers - but you might stink the office out - just boil a kettle and put the packet in a meg/jug.

mckenzie · 11/09/2012 09:39

I tried those Brighthair just this morning. I made one last night after seeing them mentioned on here (blueberries and maple syrup). Made me heave Sad
