Kenwood chef AND magimix???

TheSteveMilliband · 26/08/2012 16:16

I have a magimix which I use for curry pastes/ grating/ pastry etc but have never found it that good for cakes/meringues. I hanker after a kenwood/kitchenaid but can't justify the expense unless get an old second hand one and then I still have to justify the space it takes up! Does anyone have both, and if so do you use them both? They all seem to have lots of attachments which I don't need, just the whisk/kbeater/dough hook would be fine. Please come and help me justify having both!

You could sell the magimix, and just get a kitchenaid? Confused (I'm clueless when it comes to mixers, I just want one which will make pizza dough and grate the cheese.)

TheSteveMilliband · 26/08/2012 19:07

Hmm, know you're probably right ladyS but not sure if it'd be as good for chopping / grating. Think I should have done more research before buying Blush

Yes I have both Grin

I use the Magimix for cooking and the Kitchenaid for baking. We got both as gifts for our wedding - I doubt I could've justified buying both. Christmas?

I have a very old Kenwood Chef, think 1976, and a kenwood food processor from about 1998. They do very different jobs and I wouldn't be without either of them. They both live in the dark cupboard of doom that is next to the sink and a little bit damp but they are surviving.

TheSteveMilliband · 26/08/2012 19:15

Star girl, that's what I want to hear Wink. Will keep an eye on classifieds I think.

I have both too. I gave the Kenwood a home when a friend didn't want it - it's pretty old, probably a 1970s model. The Magimix was a wedding present and been going for almost 20 years. Both do different jobs and now I couldn't choose which to keep if I was told I could only have one.

TheSteveMilliband · 26/08/2012 19:24

MrsP great! My mum has a kenwood chef that's at least 40 yrs old and still going strong. These days they seem to come with food processor attachments, though I'm not sure if that would do everything a magimix does. Liking reasons for having both Grin

Kenwood Kenwood Kenwood ! Love my Kenwood, bought second hand, very light use, late 70s. You can have them serviced then voila you have a smoothly gliding machine. I use my food proceessor for completely different things to the Kenwood- I only use Kenwood for bread making, whisking, cake making, fab pastry. Food processor more for slicing grating, chopping grinding.
Look on eBay you'll always see them for sale..

ThisIsNotHoneyDragon · 26/08/2012 19:31

I have a Kenwood prospero which takes up no space at all, has the same power as a titanium or KA and does EVERYTHING.

bureni · 26/08/2012 19:33

Both brands are good but nothing touches a Robocop, built to last but a bit pricey.

Pumble · 26/08/2012 19:35

If you got a kenwood chef you could get the food processor attachment (one of oh so many attachements!) that sits on the top for your chopping etc (thus saving on space), although I have to confess that although I love my kenwood and would never ever part with it I would love a magimix to go alongside it!

LadySybildeChocolate · 26/08/2012 19:53

What do they both do, exactly? Blush

Runningblue · 26/08/2012 20:53

Pizza dough is better in the kitchen aid / Kenwood and grating cheese unless you buy an attachment, is a job for the food processor/ magimix

Runningblue · 26/08/2012 20:54

If that's what you meant lady Sybil ?

LadySybildeChocolate · 26/08/2012 20:55

I have a food processor, I've no idea what the attachments are for though. It's a morphy richards one, it's not great. We've decided to stop buying take away pizzas as they are far too salty, so we're going to make our own instead. I'll need something to help me make the dough Grin

LadySybildeChocolate · 26/08/2012 20:56

What about making bread/cakes/meringue? I'll have to have a kitchen aid/kenwood for this won't I? What else can I use it for?

Runningblue · 26/08/2012 21:02

Yep bread is amazingly easy with a Kenwood. Meringue you absolutely need a hand electric whisk or a Kenwood/ kitchen aid unless you whisk by hand (in the life is too short category)
Cakes can also be done with a hand electric whisk very easily
So if you're on a bit of a budget, get a food processor- Kenwood processors are very good (I don't work on commission honest) and much cheaper than a magi.
Then buy an electric whisk like this www.amazon.co.uk/Kenwood-HM220-3-Speed-Hand-Mixer/dp/B0000YVNQG/ref=sr_1_2?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1346011286&sr=1-2
for cakes, meringues, whisking etc ie the things not so successful in a food processor.

Runningblue · 26/08/2012 21:04

Pizza dough is easy by hand too, or you can do a scone type base which is easy as pie www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/8782/cheese-and-bacon-scone-pizza

LadySybildeChocolate · 26/08/2012 21:05

Oh, I have an electric whisk. Smile I have a food processor (it's crap, but it works), not a mixer though.

LadySybildeChocolate · 26/08/2012 21:06

Smile Thank you. I think Pizza hut used the whole tub of salt on our last order, it was vile.

Runningblue · 26/08/2012 21:07

Well unless you're mad on baking or want to be, you could do the bread/ pizza dough bits by hand.
Otherwise treat yourself to a Kenwood/ kitchen aid!

TheSteveMilliband · 26/08/2012 21:08

LadyS the magimix chops and has grater attachments, the kenwood has a beater/whisk/dough hook rather than a blade. I have made cakes in the magimix but think it is easy to overbeat. I've used it for bread dough too as it has a plastic "blade" which it says to use for dough, and it seems to work ok. Might be worth giving it a try in your morphy Richards to see, but you have to stand holding it as it shimmys across the counter!
They go for alot on eBay, hoping to come across one in a car boot for a song Wink

Or flatbread pizza is nice - just use a wrap and put your toppings on that - then cook on a pizza stone in oven

LadySybildeChocolate · 26/08/2012 21:09

I love cakes. I could do with making my own as it will save me a fortune. Blush I'll have a look around I think. Grin

TheSteveMilliband · 26/08/2012 21:10

Blooming iPhone, I'm way behind Blush
