or eat them?

I bought a jar of Duchy blackcurrant jam yesterday (would have bought raspberry but it has lime in it???) and it is lush. Mind you so it should be at £2.45 a jar - I would have bought own-brand conserve but there wasn't any.

Lidl's jam is excellent and incredibly cheap - about 65p for a 450g jar.

MrsSpoon · 07/03/2006 22:26

Has it been revealed yet as to why lemon curd is a no-no in some homes???

Homemade lemon curd is delish.

Buy jam occasionally, DH eats too much of it.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 07/03/2006 22:28

ooo I do. Soft white bread, loads of butter and jam - strawberry or blackcurrant - one of my favourite foods. I think of jam as a staple - not traditional - has it gone out of fashion?

hoxtonchick · 07/03/2006 22:30

i make my own as we have plum & apple trees which go crazy. i can't stand marmalade so never buy it. i got some lovely fig preserve from sainsbury's recently. we also eat st dalfour sugar free jam, which i think is sweetened with apple juice concentrate. it's not the same as real jam, but not too bad at all.

i didn't appreciate how much sugar there is in jam until i started making my own.......

moondog · 07/03/2006 22:30

Hah Ivor! It's only just begun cariad! Grin

I stood firm though. My choice or no choice. I practice what i preach.

Pagan · 07/03/2006 22:31

Buy all of these mentioned from my local farm. They are home-made by the old lady who lives there and are delish! Used to make my own but not had time to either pick the fruit or make the stuff

moondog · 07/03/2006 22:32

Home made jams and chutneys are to be cherished.
Smile

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 07/03/2006 22:33

I have just read through the thread and been reminded of Roses lime marmalade. mmmmm. will have to get some

IvortheEngine · 07/03/2006 22:33

Off on a tangent somewhat, but does anyone else like white bread, buttered with icecream on top? I didn't realise that I'd turned into a freak show until a friend's daughter asked at the end of a meal, "Are you going to have an ice cream sandwich for pudding?" She had heard about it and wanted to see me eat it for herself! Smile

JanH · 07/03/2006 22:33

I love the idea of jam being good for you because it has fruit in - would half a jar be 1 of your 5 a day? Grin

handlemecarefully · 07/03/2006 22:34

Oh no, surely a mere teaspoon full would count as 1 of the 5 per day Grin

IvortheEngine · 07/03/2006 22:36

moondog - I daren't think about the rest of the week. Can Actol (where's that list of how to do ^?), Cerdd Dant, etc. No wonder I've just had a big glass of wine!

IvortheEngine · 07/03/2006 22:38

Can no-one mention eating fruit on a spoon, please? When I was little I used to have to take tablets this way, crushed into jam and eaten from a spoon.

bigbaubleeyes · 07/03/2006 22:42

blimey - it never occurred to me that jam and marmelade are old fashioned! Its a staple part of our diet.

Children often have tartine for breakfast, which is bread, butter and jam.
also make jam suet puddings yum.

MrsBadger · 08/03/2006 09:25

ooh, golden syrup on toast - yum!

Condensed milk on toast is exquisite also Blush - friend from Hong Kong ate it all the time and I had to give it a go. Has a respectable literary pedigree too - AA Milne was a big fan.

Nbg · 08/03/2006 09:29

DD and I have just had raspberry jam on toast.
Dh likes marmalade too. Always have it in.
Like to have golden syrup too for porridge.

Auntymandy · 08/03/2006 09:30

is jam and marmalade a tradition food? Never thought of it as one!! Yes I still buy it!

Orinoco · 08/03/2006 21:27

I bought some strawberry today.

Janh - like your theory. Do chocolate raisins count as another?

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 08/03/2006 22:18

orinoco - are you implying that they don't? you'll be telling me ketchup doesn't count next.

Orinoco · 08/03/2006 22:51

hey so that's three of the five. Add a fruit shoot and you're nearly there....
