Her chorizo and potato stew - I add more coriander and jiggle the percentage of water/sherry a bit (more sherry! Wink) but it's fail safe and soooooooo tasty. Also works well with cannellini beans

Actually working through the JO book is good because I'm not that inspired when I flick through it but so far have loved all the results by "forcing" myself to do one a week

I've looked it up and it sounds delish. Wasn't sure from your earlier post whether you had access to the recipe.
If not, here it is: Spanish Stew .

River Cottage Veg Everyday is the only cookery book that I've ever actually wanted to work my way through in entirety.

minipie · 06/07/2012 17:46

I make that chorizo and potato stew all the time - except I add chickpeas and butterbeans (sounds like carb overload but it isn't) and use stock instead of water. Sometimes I add spinach or kale if I have some.

I have never seen the Nigella recipe though! I think mine was a Jamie Oliver recipe this one minus the tomatoes, ham and egg which I couldn't be arsed with.

River cottage veg

Kellamity · 06/07/2012 18:47

I seem to have bought myself a copy of Plenty at Tescos today! It has a padded cover and for that alone I love it Grin

Looks like the Kellamity family will be starting Meat Free Mondays!!!

Thanks midnighthag, I've actually bastardised it to suit myself now but Nigel Slater also reprints it, crediting Nigella....

Moosewo Cookbook.

I love all that veggie vegan stuf. DH and DC are very meat & two veg though.

BikeRunSki · 06/07/2012 19:12

Sorry, that should be Moosewood.

JulesJules · 07/07/2012 18:30

Ooh yes BikeRunSki I love Moosewood too. I've got a very old battered copy (Not the reissued version with all the recipes converted to low fat. Fotunately Grin)

BikeRunSki · 07/07/2012 18:56

Yey JulesJules, me too, and the Enchanted Brocolli Forest.

How To Cook, by Delia, because it teaches core skills, helps you understand how ingredients like eggs, flour, etc. work (I like to know the 'why' before following instructions) and has some great recipes. For example her 'ravioli' style mince pies are v. Easy and always a hit. But now I want to buy River Cottage Veg!

showtunesgirl · 07/07/2012 22:23

River Cottage Veg is £9.99 from The Book People!

FreelanceMama · 08/07/2012 05:17

Ooh thanks showtunesgirl :)

Leith's Simple Cookery - I own loads of recipe books, and this is by far the one I use the most

Oxygene · 14/07/2012 21:49

I guess it depends on what you want to cook but I have Jamie's ministry of food which I find is great for soups, sauces and roasts but it's way far from the healthy eating which he so promotes but is pretty much the modern day bible. Everything is laden with fat so beware it's not a healthy cook book.

I also have James Martin's Great British Dinners which is a few years old now but really good for stuff like stews, pies, goulash, stroganoff, duck, game and puddings. Also one called Brian Turner's Favourite British Recipes which has given me a few ideas for things like perfect yorkshire puds and pastry.

Ken Hom for chinese although I never think you can truly create chinese like the takeaways so I tend to stay away from chinese cooking at home unless you have a nearby chinese wholesaler. Madhur Jaffrey's
An invitation to indian cooking is a must.

But the one i'm reading right now is the slimfast free foods book where i've found the perfect recipe for chicken tika massala.

I really want to get a river cottage book as the recent series has given me some great recipes.

Personally I don't think you can ever choose just one book. You have to have a selection of at least half a dozen or more.

FireOverBabylon I used to work for Diana. She's luurverly! I knew I recognised the name of that book and it all came back to me when I clicked on your link!
