Just wondering, need inspiration!

I fancy a book on regional british food. Saw Hix's book in the shop but wonder if anyone has any recommendation.

I've been veggie for 25 years - wonder if the Veg Everyday book is better for meateaters trying to eat more vege, than it is for veggies? I really don't need recipes for cheese on toast or roasted vege and for a lot of the other things in there (vege chilli, chickpea curry etc) I've established my own special Mother Of Version over many years of fiddling. I've just looked through it again for the purpose of this thread - still uninspired!

I love reading How To Eat but there is little in there I actually want to cook. Love the Barbados Cream though and have adapted the baked plums recipe to do with port, which is gorgeous.

I think you're probably right Remus. I love it but then I'm omnivore.
Saying that I've not used it for ages, must get back into it, after using the two I bought last week, and the three I've ordered this weekGrin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/07/2012 11:41

:) You're getting out of control!

Did you ever take your dd to Wagamamas btw?

NettoSuperstar · 01/07/2012 11:55

Not yet, holidays started here now though so hopefully we'll make it at some point.
My recipe book/online food ordering is getting out of hand, I spent loads on Asian ingredients recently and I've just discovered mex grocer and am dying to order a tortilla press.

I had a yummy veggie Pad Thai there last week and am now trying to find a decent recipe to make it at home.

I would be happy to eat Asian-style food every single day of the week tbh - but the girls complain when I have too much of a run on it!

Am going to do a leek and cheese quiche today, with garlic roasted potatoes and salad I think. And I might bake a cake.

Rosa · 01/07/2012 13:03

Remus, the lemon bars I get asked to make regularly. The strawberry cheescake cupcakes are yummy. Also the chic chip cookies never fail and the dds love to make them. Thing is I have yet to do anything that fails from there. Mind you with all these comments on Nigel Slater I think next trip to waterstones I will sit in achair and study it....( I am abroad and when I am in the UK it is a habbit of mine....)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/07/2012 13:54

Thanks Rosa. Will dig it out again and check out the lemon bars in particular - I love lemony cakes.

Bill Granger! Oz Chef.. Yum

Another vote for Madhur Jaffrey's Ultimate Curry Bible Some of the recipes are very complicated but they are amazing.

However, I also recently got her Curry Easy book as well and that is really good too.

Badvoc · 02/07/2012 17:47

Nigella - any of them but I use how to be a domestic goddess most
Jamie - any of them
Nigel slater - any of them
Valentine Warner - what to eat

I wasn't best pleased with Domestic Goddess when two recipes (both fairly expensive to buy for) failed - grrrrr. It's gorgeous to look at though. Oh and I like that oniony sconey thing in it.

thisisyesterday · 02/07/2012 18:03

i would go with Ottolenghi's Plenty

neolara · 02/07/2012 18:04

River Cottage Veg.

Kellamity · 02/07/2012 18:04

Is Plenty vegetarian?

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 02/07/2012 18:04

thisisyesterday · 02/07/2012 18:05

yes, Plenty is vegetarian

haven't made anything out of it yet that hasn't been absolutely gorgeous. even things that seem very odd while making them!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/07/2012 18:21

Thanks ThisIsYesterday - do you reckon it's available online?

Kellamity · 02/07/2012 18:22

Have unintentionally almost worked through Nigella Bites, HFW Veg Everyday and Nigel's 30min meals - but I'm rubbish at following recipes properly, always adding bits and not measuring properly so DH are working through Jamie's America (we've just moved to the States) and are trying to be strict about it!

I am desperate for How To Eat - fab recipe of all time is out of that book

Saritabean · 06/07/2012 04:28

Falling cloudberries... Amazing recipe book that's readable with other bits- mix between Scandinavian, greek and I think somewhere else- all the places the authors family are from... Lovely book with some unusual but yummy recipes.

MidnightHag · 06/07/2012 09:01

GirlWithTheMouseyHair , which is the "fab recipe of all time" from How to Eat, please?
