What breakfast really keeps you going until lunch?

I can't be doing with silly little bowls of airy cereal like rice crispies - you're hungry again 20 minutes after you've eaten them!

I do like eggs, but not everyday.

Is there such a thing as a quick breakfast that keeps you feeling full for more than a couple of hours?!

Sausages

EssentialFattyAcid · 08/06/2012 13:32

Anything with protein in it works well at keeping you feeling full

Three weetabix, warm milk, sliced banana, blueberries. With a big cup of coffee.

shockers · 08/06/2012 13:56

I alternate between an omelette one day (2 eggs and whatever's in the fridge) and beans on toast the next. Takes just a few minutes and keeps me full til lunch.

KalSkirata · 08/06/2012 16:50

beans on toast. Good carbs/protein/fat. Am stuffed all morning. And none of this sliver sliced rubbish. Giant doorrsteps of toast.

It is a weekend thing because I'd get fat if I ate it every day but I love English muffins done in the toaster with poached eggs (90 secs in mug in microwave) and a slice of cheese a 'la McDonalds egg McMuffins - they are really filling, and that comes from someone who is always hungry

Good thread op.

I thought it was just me who was starving after porridge! Glad to hear some others have the same effect.

My breakfast has to last from 7am to 1 at earliest and often 3, when I get half an hour until I finish work at 8.15. So breaskfast really matters.

Maybe I need to eat more eggs then? Not keen on muesli, nor am I keen on my current weight so maybe I should just eat the stuff and stop snacking!

Francagoestohollywood · 08/06/2012 17:19

Rice cakes with parma ham.

Eggs in any form.

Yogurt with berries and walnuts

mummysmellsofsick · 08/06/2012 18:03

A breakfast smoothie. I haven't made this for years but it used to keep me going from 7am - 3pm

Apple juice
Oats
A couple of dates
Some almonds
A banana

Whizz in blender. Should be a runny, drinkable porridge consistency.

mummysmellsofsick · 08/06/2012 18:04

It's much longer lasting than porridge because the oats are raw and take ages to digest. I think that's why anyway.

StopEatingThatMud · 08/06/2012 18:18

Toast with peanut butter and a sliced banana is the only thing which fills me up other than eggs.

Unfortunately I have to limit my intake as I could happily consume 1/3 of a jar of peanut butter on 1 slice of toast, so the calorie consumption outweighs any benefits!

MonkeyGoneToHeaven · 12/06/2012 11:06

Slice of wholemeal toast spread with low fat cream cheese, topped with a slice of ham, slice of edam, sliced tomato and a few leaves of basil if I have it. Cut into four squares.

Takes a minute to make and a minute to eat, contains fibre, protein and a fresh tomato - yum.

bacon · 12/06/2012 11:50

Even with whole oat porridge (slighter lower GI to the powdered stuff) it doesnt work for me and can be hungrey mid morning - have decided to stick to a right concotion of All bran, special k and a topping of granola works!

Beanbagz · 12/06/2012 11:52

I have one Weetabix with a sprinkling of Jordans Country Crisp (Strawberry) on top with semi skimmed milk. Keeps me going until lunchtime which is generally 5-5½ hours later.

LemonTurd · 12/06/2012 12:09

The only time breakfast fills me up till lunchtime is if I have a full cooked English when staying in a hotel.

At home I have toast, scrambled egg and beans which gets me to mid-morning snack

summerintherosegarden · 15/06/2012 15:18

Just to throw it out there - does breakfast always need to keep you going until lunch? If you are genuinely hungry and have to wait a while until lunch, why not make sure you have some fruit or oatcakes with you to bridge the gap?

As long as you are eating a nutritious breakfast in the first place and not one of those cereals that are a bowl of sugar masquerading as 'whole wheat goodness'

HollyBollyBooBoo · 15/06/2012 22:23

What's a protein shake and how do I make one?

summerintherosegarden · 16/06/2012 09:56

Holly - Buy protein powder (Holland & Barrett, Julian Graves, etc sell), follow instructions on packet, voila! I think it's repulsive stuff but my DH used to drink them when he was doing a huge amount of exercise.

I suppose you could also make natural protein shakes by whizzing up bananas, PB and milk, and throwing in a raw egg or two if you dare..

TheNewandImprovedMrsHollywood · 16/06/2012 13:10

Blimey, I stepped away from the thread for a bit and came back to all this! Well done, ladies.

I like some of the different ideas for cooking eggs, although somehow I just can't imagine eating them on a weekday. Someone mentioned peanut butter and banana in toast; I used to eat that a lot and always found it filled me up well. Will have to try that again!

Summer - I suppose there isn't a 'need' for breakfast to fill you up until lunch, but I don't always get a chance to snack before 12. Either that, or I'll have to start a whole new thread on healthy snacks... Wink

Ah, I agree that if you don't get the chance to snack, or healthy snacks are not available, then yes a more filling breakfast is needed! I always keep a banana or some bread in my handbag if I think I'll need a snack out and about.
