What breakfast really keeps you going until lunch?

I can't be doing with silly little bowls of airy cereal like rice crispies - you're hungry again 20 minutes after you've eaten them!

I do like eggs, but not everyday.

Is there such a thing as a quick breakfast that keeps you feeling full for more than a couple of hours?!

BIWI I wonder if that's why I genuinely find a large milky coffee more sustaining than, say, tea and toast? It's fat and protein, surely??

BIWItheBold · 08/06/2012 09:03

Possibly - although if it's milky it will also be fairly carby - would be interesting to know what nutritional breakdown!

multipoodles · 08/06/2012 09:03

Porridge does it for me, with some ground flax seeds, it keeps me so full some days I forget to have lunch and start to feel peckish about 3pm :)

brighthair · 08/06/2012 09:03

A protein shake mix for me - I have protein powder, soy milk, bit f peanut butter and a banana blended together
Or scrambled eggs, but done in a frying pan for speed

ObviouslyOblivious · 08/06/2012 09:04

Porridge or eggy bread.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 08/06/2012 09:13

Two cups of tea and four fags!

Acumenoop · 08/06/2012 09:33

Er, after extensive research: two poached eggs with spinach and a spoonful of hollandaise sauce

I crack the eggs in a cup and cover with water, microwave for 1 min
put the frozen spinach in a microwavable box, zap for 2 min

If I eat porridge or bread etc I get really hungry.

OneLittleBabyTerror · 08/06/2012 10:34

Lots of toasts. Also a banana and muffin mid-morning. Unless I have a full english, I'm starving by 10-11ish. And I don't have time in the morning to do eggs, porridge, bacon etc.

UdderlyBanal · 08/06/2012 10:39

eggs - I do other things while they are cooking
I agree they take time to eat so if I don't have time to eat them properly I make an omelette "sandwich" in a box or take some hard-boiled eggs to work with me.

ScroobiousPip · 08/06/2012 10:46

Another boiled egg fan here. Chuck em on, have a shower and, bingo, they're done. But then i'm a quick eater and have been known to put an egg away in three spoonfuls. Blush

FunnyLittleFrog · 08/06/2012 10:47

Agree about avoiding the carbs as much as possible.

I love eggs at the weekend but don't have time during the week (don't have a microwave!).

A quick and easy breakfast that seems to fill me up for AGES is a bowl of mixed nuts, seeds and some fresh / dried fruit (whatever's in the cupboard) with a couple of spoons of vanilla yoghurt.

TheSurgeonsMate · 08/06/2012 10:51

In summer, eat your oats cold - bircher muesli recipes abound.

I do something a bit different, because I like them quite "raw", I just put oats in a bowl, add half a grated apple, some milk and a little lemon juice. I usually add nuts, although since dd has started asking for some, I often can't be bothered as I'm convined I have to cut them into the tiniest slivers for her and then I can't taste them.

I post this on every breakfast thread. I am an Oats bore. See also Moby Wraps and Sleepy Tunes.

TheSurgeonsMate · 08/06/2012 10:53

Accumenoop after your clear guide to poaching eggs and spinach, you don't tell us how you create a spoonful of hollandaise sauce!

HipHopOpotomus · 08/06/2012 10:57

I love muesli - I get a Dorset Cereals one & keep at work. It has no added salt/fat but has enough nuts & raisins to make it interesting to eat and sustain me until lunch. I have with a splash of semi-skimmed milk. Never fails.

(BTW it has 10g protein per 100g and nearly 8g fat per 100g - which I think slows the carb absorption rate somewhat)

At the weekend I like poached eggs on toast.

QuintessentialShadows · 08/06/2012 10:58

I stopped drinking latte when I realized that each small latte was an extra 200 calories I really can do without. 300 if you count the sugary syrup which makes a good old Norwegian Latte with double espresso and Irish Cream or Hazelnut flavouring so delish.... (not going into adding cream and flaked almonds, but that will put me to sleep in the car and possibly be quite lethal)

StealthPolarBear · 08/06/2012 11:00

Omellete is quick, stick toast on, crack egg, whisk, pour into hot pan, toast pops up, egg done
Am on a diet and have this fairly often for breakfast

Acumenoop · 08/06/2012 11:18

Hahah, I, er, open the jar of Maille hollandaise sauce. Grin

/me considers writing marvellous book in manner of Nigella

TheSurgeonsMate · 08/06/2012 11:32

You can buy it in jars?

DD would bloody love that. I'm off to sainsbo's dot co dot uk to update my trolley.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/06/2012 11:38

Ham and cheese sandwich Grin (wholegrain bread tho)

Can't eat eggs anymore :(

LizzieMint73 · 08/06/2012 13:07

I sometimes have ham and cheese sandwiches which are then dipped in beaten egg (make a little side omelette with any leftovers) and fried into a hammy cheese eggy bready deliciousness - doesnt take long and is pretty filling but I think breakfast should be much more substantial than a bowl of cereal, which the OP correctly states that fills you up for about 20 mins

Annunziata · 08/06/2012 13:14

Toast and coffee for me.

RightsaidFreud · 08/06/2012 13:20

Protein shake for me, or scrambled eggs. Both quick and easy for first thing in the morning.

ScoopThePoop · 08/06/2012 13:25

Cup of tea and a big bowl of porridge.

ViolaCrayola · 08/06/2012 13:28

Beans on toast. Toast and peanut butter (this works really well). Porridge...

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/06/2012 13:29

Lizzie - NOM Grin

I shall be doing that for breakfast tomorrow.

Ooh - thought of another one. Huevos Rancheros. Must make that at the weekend.
