I'm running out of ideas for DS (6). He prefers hot food but I can't think of much beyond boiled egg & soldiers (won't eat scrambled egg).

He sometimes eats waffles with berries on top or croissants or porridge. Is there anything obvious I'm missing?

Not a lot springs to mind, but then I am a lazy bowl of cereal breakfaster and can't stand it hot. DD is only 16 months and happy with slightly warmed cereal (although we have three different types that we give her, so they get 'rotated').

Can only think of things like beans on toast, sausage, bacon (if you're meat-eaters), or pancakes.

Grockle · 15/05/2012 10:46

I wish he'd eat cereal!

Pancakes is a good idea. He wants a proper cooked breakfast but I cannot do that on a school day. He just gets stuck on the same thing and will eat nothing but waffles til I refuse to buy more.

Breakfast muffins? Blueberry or something like that.
Cheese on toast maybe?
Sometimes my 6YO wants a tuna sandwich... but that's not warm.
Shredded wheat with warm milk on?
They do like to keep us parents on our toes don't they? Smile

Grockle · 15/05/2012 11:09

I'll look for a muffin recipe - that's a good idea. Although he doesn't like cake much Hmm so I suspect I'll end up eating them. Oh well!

Omelette? Does toast not count as 'hot' food?

Grockle · 15/05/2012 11:33

Won't eat omelette - I did suggest that. He'll just have to stick with his waffles & occasional croissants or boiled egg, I think. everything else takes too long to cook or is unacceptable!

Thank you for the suggestions Smile

Toast is occasionally ok but apparently it's not a breakfast food Hmm

He might eat a tuna sandwich - they're his favourite. Not hot but it might be good enough. Thank you!

DD has a shocking appetite and often doesn't eat her packed lunch. This morning she had poached eggs on toast made in silicone poachers.
Other days she has hot dogs, baked beans or spaghetti with sausages or bagels and cheese. Cheese either on toast or in the breville occasionally too.

Antidote · 15/05/2012 11:57

What about warm stewed fruit (cook a batch & microwave portion in the morning) with yoghurt & muesli?

Or sausages cooked the night before & microwaved with egg & toast?

Cereal with hot milk?

Beans on toast?

BlackAffronted · 15/05/2012 12:08

Breakfast wraps
French toast
Bagels & cream cheese
Crackers & sliced cheese & ham
Pancakes
Crumpets

div22c · 15/05/2012 12:18

Menemen (similar to Huevos rancheros). Spices can be adjusted to suit his taste. You can roast and keep the tomato onion pepper mix in the fridge the day before. At breakfat time just warm up, add the egg on top and cook.

div22c · 15/05/2012 12:20

Porridge

BigBadBear · 15/05/2012 12:24

How about savoury muffins or pancakes? Cheese, courgette, sweetcorn and red pepper muffins are all lovely, as are sweetcorn pancakes - you could always make a batch and freeze them and either take them out the night before (muffins) or pop a couple of pancakes in the toaster.

chipmunksex · 15/05/2012 12:31

Scotch pancakes (bought or homemade) can be toasted in the morning quickly and served with fruit and yoghurt.

Brioche toast? Or is that too toasty?

I would try letting him choose things at the shops too, he might be more keen to try things he's chosen-or even better made himself.

You could make homemade granola with all the things he likes in it and served with hot milk.

Or what about kippers or mackerel?

(btw Is he bothered by the limited repertoire? Because if not, then why worry? Wink)

ethelb · 15/05/2012 12:36

jeez, when I was 6 I didn't know that you could have a cooked breakfast.

Antidote · 15/05/2012 12:37

Eggy bread?

chipmunksex · 15/05/2012 12:38

Me either ethel but it's a bit too late to remove it from his little head now don't ya think? Grin

besmirchedandbewildered · 15/05/2012 12:39

Eggy bread is probably quicker than toast if you're organised.

hillyhilly · 15/05/2012 12:41

I do a nice lunch sandwich that the kids love. Take two wraps or tortillas, put one in a dry frying pan sprinkle over grated cheese and you could add ham/ tuna/ anything else, put the other wrap on top and flip it over once the bottom is browned so it gets brown on both sides and the cheese melts, it comes out thin and I cut it into wedges like a pizza , it's nice cold in lunch boxes too. I call it a quesadilla but it's probably a million miles away from what a real quesadilla would be like.

Grockle · 15/05/2012 12:48

Neither did I! I don't even know how we got started on this. Will try eggy bread & he loves quesadillas, so that would be a good thing to try.

TerraNotSoFirma · 15/05/2012 12:55

Could you make up the egg mix in a container and soak the bread in it overnight in the fridge? Don't know if that would work but would be quicker in the morning.

besmirchedandbewildered · 15/05/2012 13:02

Your bread will disintegrate if you soak it overnight but you could do the egg mixture in advance.

ripsishere · 15/05/2012 13:08

Or tinned rice pudding. DD has had that a couple of times.

Grockle · 15/05/2012 13:16

Yes, yes, rice pudding! We've done that before, thank you for reminding me. He also loves homemade semolina - I might make some of that now actually. Yum, lunch Wink

OP posts:
Antidote · 15/05/2012 14:43

Grockle (excellent name btw, are you from the west country?) I can do rice pudding overnight in my slow cooker, might be an alternative to tinned, and you can make all sorts of yummy flavours.
