DS birthday coming up and I want to try it. Where online can I buy colouring that will do the sponge lovely and bright, without bankrupting me.

And any tips?

Hmm, I've seen a photo on someone's profile, think it might be StrandedBear hang on, I'll have a look and report back!

VikingVagine · 25/04/2012 19:20

Yup, maybe send her a PM?

LesAnimaux · 25/04/2012 19:21

Doesn't normal food colouring do the job?

PoohBearsHole · 25/04/2012 19:23

Have made one and you really for the best colour need the gel which will keep for ages - rather than food cololuring liquid as you will use the whole lot up.

Amazon, Ebay I think have a look as I saw a thread the other day about cake craft etc so they may be able to help good luck.

NoKnownAllergies · 25/04/2012 19:28

Normal food colouring will do the trick. Squires do a set online if you want to splash out.

diedandgonetodevon · 25/04/2012 19:30

You want to look for gel colouring. The liquid ones often disappear during cooking.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 25/04/2012 19:33

I find liquid a but rubbish, and want to do layers so need really vibrant colours. I'll have a look for gels on amazon and check the reviews Smile

5318008 · 25/04/2012 19:36

here

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 25/04/2012 19:55

oooh thank you!

so paste/gel colours it is.

I think I may cheat and get ready coloured fondant icing

MyCatHasStaff · 25/04/2012 21:07

You could try Americolor colours - they're much brighter than paste colours. I got mine here

BellaOfTheBalls · 25/04/2012 21:10

I bought gels to do DS1's first birthday cake almost 3 years ago and they are fine. Just buy primary colours and mix up the rest!

trice · 25/04/2012 21:19

I bought neon gel food colours from asda. They look great.

blueberryboybait · 25/04/2012 21:24

Morrisions have basic colour gels on special at 2 for £3. You can mix gels to make colours you don't have. If you get red, blue, yellow and green you can make most of the other colours you need. They bake brighter than the cake mix shows.

TheArmadillo · 25/04/2012 21:39

I have a picture of the one I did on my profile which I did with standard food colouring that I got from the supermarket (£1 per bottle and I used half a bottle per layer) - very bright. Need to use a strong cake to cover the flavour though. I did an almond flavour cake and left off the marzipan.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 25/04/2012 23:22

That's fab armadillo Smile

I think the offer on ebay is good. I'm now torn between the american ones and sugar flair.

It won't be a waste as I bake a lot so would like decent colourings anyway

OP posts:
hermionestranger · 25/04/2012 23:24

I use sugarflair colours they are brilliant!

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 25/04/2012 23:27

ooooh good, they are vastly cheaper Grin

OP posts:
FoofFighter · 25/04/2012 23:28

I use sugar flair :) are you doing it like TheArmadillo's cake in layers or a tie dye effect?

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 25/04/2012 23:40

I'm doing layers. hopefully I have done a layered cake before but I'm not experienced with twiddly bits and fanciness. My cakes are for eating at home usually not colouring in Grin

DS saw a rainbow cake and loved it. so that is what he's getting.

OP posts:
FoofFighter · 25/04/2012 23:52

tie dye is a piece of cake

Just colour it in different bowls then splodge it in the tins, ta da!

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 25/04/2012 23:54

But foof - I have got it into my head to be geometric and make a lego block hence ds's coveted stripes. I have gone mad haven't I?

OP posts:
FoofFighter · 25/04/2012 23:55

hahaha a little maybe :) promise me you'll try a tie dye one at some point though anyway, they rock!

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 26/04/2012 21:47

I will do Foof Smile

Can I assemble it and then freeze it for a few days? Then ice it? Will buttercream freeze ok?

OP posts:
blueberryboybait · 26/04/2012 21:50

Yup, you can freeze it with the butter cream on.
