DS birthday coming up and I want to try it. Where online can I buy colouring that will do the sponge lovely and bright, without bankrupting me.

And any tips?

yes yes and yes :) I freeze mine before doing the crumb coat (first v thin coating of buttercream) then freeze again before the main one.

I did the rainbow cake in the autumn and was really happy with the sugarflair colours. But I have since noticed ASDA and other places doing the gels.

LesAnimaux, I think to get such vibrant colours you'd need to add to much normal colouring, which would mean upsetting the balance of the sponge mix and making it too soggy.

Cool beans with the freezing, that should make it easier to ice too. Definitely looks like ds is swaying toward a Lego cake, which will look quite cool.

I used the asda colours, can't go wrong at two for £3. Has anyone found the cakes are a little bit drier when you use them though? They definitely didn't last as long as cakes normally do.

TheArmadillo · 29/04/2012 20:03

are you going to post pictures? I was going to do a lego (well duplo) cake for dd's birthday (not till august). Would be interested to see it and how you did it.

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 17/05/2012 13:44

Right tis I the op back to Honeydragon now. Update time.

Sugarflair colours are amazeballs!

Also can't believe how easy it was to make a rainbow cake. the recipie was very sweet, but tasty, but it's for children and already lurid colours so it may as well use a ton of sugar too Grin

Ds was totally thrilled with his Lego block cake, and having not told him I'd made the rainbow cake his face when we let him cut into the cake was wonderful.

It was also a happy accident that I had to do a terrible rush job icing it with buttercream, after a toddler/puppy/Tesco delivery call related incident that left the ready roll icing unusable, as DS prefers buttercream, and it still looked good enough.

Pics on profile.

Can highly recommend making one just as something to do with little ones as dd (2y) really enjoyed the whole process Smile

Wow that looks really bright! How much of the colouring did you end up using? I'm so tempted to order some gels/pastes now...

HuevosRancheros · 17/05/2012 15:46

Wow, that looks amazing! Shall make a mental note to get sugar flair colours in the future...were they gel colours, or pastes, or what?

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 17/05/2012 16:02

Just a couple of drops, I got 6 for £11 (inc postage from ebay), I particularly like the Christmas Red and Green and can see that being lovely for christmas cup cakes and so forth.

They are gel, like a thick liquid.

DaisyMaisyJessicaEmily · 17/05/2012 16:05

Looks fantastic HD :) (foof here) Love it, how did you make the lego nobbles? Marshmallows or cupcakes or.....?

Everyone always goes oooooh! that's amazing hwo on earth did you do it (I do the tie dye effect more than layers) and it's almost embarrassing how easy it is :)

So that is your next challenge should you choose to accept, a tie dye one! Cupcakes are good for that.

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 17/05/2012 16:24

deffo doing tie next.

I used 8" square tin and then used the off cuts from trimming - simply used a round cutter. Smile

BlackAffronted · 18/05/2012 07:50

I got 5 tubs for £10 posted on ebay. Works out at £2 a tub, and they last forever.

I like the recipes you've tried on your blog. I'll have a good look later Smile

I did a rainbow cake for DDs birthday [http://www.flickr.com/photos/26262225@N07/6773682054/in/photostream pics]. I just split a large victoria sponge recipe into 7 and coloured it up with Sugarflair gel colours.

OhdearNigelosaurus · 23/05/2012 20:27

and sugarflair colours are by far and away the best

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 23/05/2012 20:39

I used silver spoon gel colours. I didn't realise they weren't liquid until I got them home. My sister used normal liquid and it was just as bright.
