I started a thread for cake people a while back but it got a bit lost in Chat so thought I'd try to tempt people into our lovely new baking topic.

Hopefully I'll see some of the posters from the chat thread, but for any new people popping in, introductions: I'm wem, I'm a recent cake obsessive and have been bothering mumsnetters about it a fair bit as I'm starting up cake decorating business. I don't have anywhere near the experience or knowledge of some of the posters in here, but I do have an excessive willingness to chat about cake :)

Let's try this again, eh?

I would deffinately tell her it's a kit and ask if she wants you to make it with the kit or not.

stealthsquiggle · 12/07/2012 10:40

wem - this was an adaptation of one from a book (probably the Lindy Smith one you have). If you did it then it would be a lot less wobbly, but the idea that provided small girl "wow" factor was putting LED tealights (like these) in the bottoms of the towers so the castle was lit up. If I did it again I might attempt stained glass windows for the towers as well.

wem · 12/07/2012 10:53

What a lovely idea stealth. I've sent her an email with my quotes based on kit and non-kit so we'll see what she comes back with. She's asked for a different colour theme already, so hopefully even if she does want the kit I'll be able to make it my own in some ways anyway.

Blueberry - how wonderful! I bet she couldn't believe her luck that she found you :)

Hellooooo [echo...echo...echo]

Kit cake lady didn't get back to me. It's possible I'm aiming a bit high with my quotes, but at the moment I'm in no rush to take on as much work as possible so I reckon I may as well quote what I'm happy to do the job for and let them go elsewhere if it's more than they're willing to pay.

However, my determination to get a decent hourly rate goes out the window for family and friends! I've just finished a handbag cake that took hours and hours. It was fun though, and something a bit different. Pic on profile if there's anyone still out there...

Hi Wem

Peeked on here earlier in the week but no-one was here :)

I have just finished an enormous Christening cake, bottom layer was 4.5 inches high (4 layers plus filling and fondant) with 2 shades of baby blue vertical stripes, stars with bears, ducks, giraffes and rocking horses on the sides, a second tier with twisted ribbons and little bows and the wilton carousel kit on top which I accented with the blue of the ribbons and stripes. Never again! It was for DD's godmother's nephew so my charges were zeor as she covered all the ingredients and bits and bobs. She also cleaned up DD2's poo twice for me which is worth so much more than cake rate!

People are starting to think about next year's weddings, I have a a flood of enquiries this week and 2 confirmed cakes.

VikingVagine · 27/07/2012 08:26

That bag looks very realistic wem !

DH made the inmates' chocolate cake for my birthday, it was nice but very bitter, the recipe calls for cocoa powder and he used 100% stuff because I thought that's what cocoa powder was, I'm not wondering if it actually means hot chocolate powder.

wem · 27/07/2012 09:47

I haven't made the inmates cake, but I would have used normal cocoa powder as well.

Blueberry, the christening cake sounds incredible, I bet they loved it. Well done on the wedding cakes, will you be doing more fairs and suchlike?

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 27/07/2012 11:02

I made inmates cake with cocoa powder (Waitrose rather than G&Bs, though) and it wasn't bitter at all Confused - there is loads of sugar in there, so I think it would be sickly sweet with drinking chocolate.

VikingVagine · 27/07/2012 21:34

I'm watching the Olympic opening ceremony, and I cant help but notice that the hill looks almost identical to a cake someone on here made (with a walker sitting on top), thought it was wem but it's not on her profile so might have been someone else.

wem · 27/07/2012 22:16

Of course, Danny consulted me extensively on his design

Grin I showed your post to DH and he said he'd thought the same - passed me by completely!

OP posts:
wem · 27/07/2012 22:18

I'd had a cull of my photos. Back on now just for you Viking :)

OP posts:
VikingVagine · 27/07/2012 22:22

Thanks, now I can show DH!

VikingVagine · 27/07/2012 22:23

I am now wondering what Danny's MN might be...

wem · 29/07/2012 18:23

I probably shouldn't tell you onboard - I'll pm you Wink

Anyone, really stupid question, i cant figure out how on earth i put photos of my cakes on my profile, could anyone please tell me how to do it, many thanks.

blueberryboybait · 29/07/2012 20:53

Nanny - got to mymumsnet at the top, click on my photos, it will ask you to log in again, a screen will appear saying no photos and some clickable links which say add photos. Click on it and it should take you to an upload page, click browse and a pop up will appear with you computer info on, select your photos, click upload and they will upload. You will need to make your page visible by changing the privacy settings for us to see them.

blueberryboybait · 29/07/2012 20:59

Just uploaded pic of this week's christening cake. I send it up to Yorkshire in granny's cake and she set it up. I have a feeling it has had a bump of sorts as the fondant strips have started coming away at the one side. Had I been there I could have fixed it.

nannycook · 29/07/2012 22:00

blueberry, help, i did that, checked to see if their on there and it says i have'nt made it public, going around in circles finding out how to make it public.

blueberryboybait · 29/07/2012 22:02

They are not public yet - under each picture there is a box that says make picture private (or something to that effect)

blueberryboybait · 29/07/2012 22:04

It may say make 'visible to any mumsnetter'

nannycook · 29/07/2012 22:30

Yeh blueberry successfull at last, just a few of the cakes i've made recently, just started making cakes again after a 20yr break, room for improvement i know but happy enough with them for now.

stealthsquiggle · 29/07/2012 22:51

very nice, nannycook. I like the top two especially.

Blueberry - I would be so nervous about one of my cakes travelling with someone else - when I transport them I always have a rescue kit with me.

nannycook · 30/07/2012 18:50

Thank you stealthsquiggle, the top one is my favourite one too. i've got a few orders to do over the next few weeks so will be kept busy, however last week i made 4 in one week, too much really as i work full time, and look after my 3yr old grandson also, phew!!

wem · 02/08/2012 15:30

Just dropped off the daffodil vase wedding cake! I've had such stress with it. I've had to leave it at the venue with instructions to put the daffodils in as the just weren't drying and worried the heads would drop off if left upright overnight. It's been so humid! Also had to rip off all icing from the vase and start again a it was going horribly wrong - how come when I was making it up as I went along it was fine, but tryimg to replicate it was so difficult - George's marvellous medicine!

Anyway, all done, and survived the journey :) I hope I can get a picture of it all put together.

stealthsquiggle · 08/08/2012 18:22

Glad it made it in the end, wem! (and I hope they send you lots of photos)
