I need meals that boost iron levels AND prevent constipation

Iron for me - am pg and waning, constipation for ds who's potty training and having a mental block with poos on the potty.

So, please, your best ideas for meals to appeal to 2.5yo and a tired cook.

So far we've had baked potatoes with tinned sardines and brocolli.

Spinach. Prunes. Steak. Hard to improve anaemia by diet alone but I managed it by eating high quality red meat twice a week. Any stewed fruit will sort out constipation, especially in a LO Wink.

Dried apricots are your friend

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 11/04/2012 21:49

Try the spatone supplement for you and fruit juice for your dc?

BIWI · 11/04/2012 21:50

Beans on wholemeal toast, with a glass of orange juice

Winkly · 11/04/2012 21:53

Hummus and wholemeal pitta. Porridge with sesame or sunflower seeds.

Kewcumber · 11/04/2012 21:58

try fruit nectar rather than juice if you can get it - I found peach or apricot nectar worked a treat on DS

Meglet · 11/04/2012 22:00

Cut down on tea / coffee as caffiene inhibits iron absorbtion.

Drink orange juice (vit c) with iron rich meals as it helps it absorb.

Ponders · 11/04/2012 22:01

something eggy (scrambled? omelette?) with orange juice for pg iron? When pg I used to take a daily multi-vit-with-iron with orange juice, which just kept my Hb levels up without the major constipation actual iron tabs caused.

for DS, BIWI's suggestion is good - the others too but maybe not so small-child friendly Smile

how much exercise does he get? could you encourage him to touch his toes 10 times, or run up & down the stairs a dozen times, a few times a day?

Spatone in juice for you, juice for him

Ponders · 11/04/2012 22:09

oooh, maples, I haven't seen a satsuma for months - only a few clementines - very disappointing Sad

\link{http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Constipation/Pages/Prevention.aspx\constipation prevention advice from NHS}

this is mostly for adults I think, but take what you can from it for your DS Smile

Myheadmyworld · 11/04/2012 22:15

Spinach and mixed cheese (cottage, mozzarella, ricotta and feta) cannelloni is an easy one. Look up ribollita, a lovely Tuscan stew/soup usually spinach and bean based but delicious I make this version www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/ribollita-recipe/index.html dh loves it even though he hates spinach! A big fat steak. I have heard chicken liver is on top of the list of iron rich foods. Breakfast cereals are usually fortified w iron

Myheadmyworld · 11/04/2012 22:17

Btw iron is constipating Hmm

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 11/04/2012 22:19

I thought liver is good.
And liquorice for afters.

Ponders · 11/04/2012 22:20

liver is good, but whereas health advice used to be liver 3 times a week (or thereabouts) for pregnant women, the advice was changed due to worries about excess Vit A (which is stored in the body & can be toxic)

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 11/04/2012 22:24

Oh I misread it as being for the ds.Yes,absolutely right,I was told not to have liver when pregnant.Sorry! Blush

You can still have liquorice though!

mamababa · 11/04/2012 22:29

Agree about spinach n cheese pasta or similar. Orange (juice) even aids iron absorption I thought so don't worry about seasonal oranges juice drink it Grin
Red meat, cottage pie mixed with green veg?

eggyblackett · 11/04/2012 22:31

Peas - high in iron, vit c and fibre

BillyBollyBandy · 11/04/2012 22:33

egg and beans on wholemeal toast
fortified orange juice and cereal - like weetabix - with some dried fruit

That'll get you going, and lots of iron there too!

Mumcentreplus · 11/04/2012 22:52

Cornflakes
