A better word for 'nibbles'

NoteSpelling · 30/03/2012 16:52

'Nibbles' always comes up on the 'words that make your teeth itch' threads.

I use the word 'nibbles'. I do see though that it is a bit of a tooth itcher.

What should I be calling the small delicious things to eat while drinking wine and chatting to friends, often before a meal?

Delectable eatables ? (being sensible)

UnChartered · 30/03/2012 16:58

pre-repas oddities?

NoteSpelling · 30/03/2012 17:00

Nibblies is clearly worse.

Light buffet is wrong for a couple of bowls of olives and peanuts, some guacamole and chips, and a tray of small pastry and goat's cheese thingies.

Canapes... can that apply to peanuts?

Snacks... maybe.

Crew-dit-ay / krud-ites... nah.

Cheesy comestibles might be winning so far.

NoteSpelling · 30/03/2012 17:01

Delectable eatables. No.

Oddities?? No!

In bars they are called bar snacks, so while not in a bar, call them 'snacks'?

MrsDeeBee · 30/03/2012 17:03

Oh well.

'bits-to-eat-while-we're-waiting-for-the-main-meal-to-cook' ?

Flisspaps · 30/03/2012 17:03

'I'll do some food'

Why differentiate between the stuff you eat before you have your meal, and the meal itself?

Blu · 30/03/2012 17:04

Crisps - if that is what they are
'Snacks' if tipped out of a variety of packets
'Canapes' if multi-ingredients have been dealt with in a skilful and fiddly way.

UnChartered · 30/03/2012 17:04

or 'summat to fill you up 'cos they're cheap'?

HOMEMADECHUTNEY · 31/03/2012 22:27

As a totally unhelpful contribution, I have always detested the term 'finger-food'. A friend came up with the much more appetising 'digit delicatessan' Hmm.

Almost makes 'nibbles' seem quite appealing, doesn't it?
