These are the things I most fancy at the moment - please can you share your best, best t&t recipes for them?

  1. Dal - ideally one that is all yellow and earthy and garlicky and that doesn't have any tomatoes in it
  2. One of those chocolate puddings that look like a cowpat and make their own sauce on the bottom
  3. vegetable biryani of some sort (hopefully an easy one that has a sauce alongside)
  4. bread and butter pudding

I need comfort food! Tia. :)

Anybody?

Delia's dahl Dead simple.
I also like this one with the flatbreads, and in fact bought the Simon Hopkinson book it's from last week, but it does have tomatoes.
There's a veg biryani recipe on p274 of the HFW book. I haven't tried it yet, but it's on my list and I've seen positive reviews for it.
I've never made either of the other two, but have made chocolate bread and butter pudding It's amazing, and I'm not a chocolate person.
I'd also highly recommend chocolate fuge cake It's my go to chocolate cake recipe, really moist and everyone who's tried it has loved it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/03/2012 15:07

Thanks Netto. I'm not overfond of Delia's. Will have a look at the other one and see if it could be de-tomatoed. I've got HFW's book, though I must say it hasn't inspired me much yet.

I've never had chocolate bread and butter pudding - but fully intend to now! Thanks again.

Just looked at the Simon H one and it looks far more like what I'm after than Delia's - but LOTS of tomatoes, sadly.

perfect dal
Not tried it, but had a google and have bookmarked.
We're having the Simon Hopkinson one again tomorrow, with his tomato curry, so no good for you obviously!
I love his food though, so much so I'm going to cook tripe next week, as he says it's good.
I've spent lots of time today doing menu plans for the rest of the week/next week and going through my books and bookmarks at things I've not tried yet.
I also have another book to purchase when money hits bank tomorrow.
I adore food/recipes/cooking.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/03/2012 19:12

That one looks nice, thank you. I guess I could do something like that but with lentils or channa dal, rather than mung beans?

Tripe though - ugh.

dhal.
1 1/2 cups dried red lentils, simmered for 30 mins in 3 cups boiling water
meanwhile, fry 1 diced onion 10 minutes, add 2 tsps cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp turmeric for 30 seconds, add 6 minced garlic cloves, fry 1 more minute, add 2 tsps curry powder fry on high for 2 mins. stir the curry mix into the lentils and serve.

luisgarcia · 28/03/2012 01:48

choc pud
250g toblerone,
1/2 pint milk
2 oz butter
3 oz muscovado
1 oz cocoa powder
1 oz self raising
2 eggs separated

melt chocolate in milk
beat butter and sugar
add dry ingredients and egg yolks
beat egg whites to stiff peaks (with a little cream of tartar if you want)
fold whites into mix
bake in bain marie @180for 45 minutes
serve with vanilla ice cream

NettoSuperstar · 28/03/2012 08:35

Yes, tripe might be an experiment too far, but I'm going to do three different dishes, plus rice as a chinese meal so if it's gross, we'll eat the rest.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/03/2012 19:47

Thank you Louis - but currry powder? Really? The method looks easy though, so I could adapt.

The chocolate pudding looks excellent - and positively evil too! I never would have thought of putting Toblerone in. :)

Don't forget to report back, Netto. :)

OP posts:
luisgarcia · 28/03/2012 20:18

Well I make my own curry mix for it but I didn't want to bore you :)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/03/2012 20:23

You won't bore me!

How does something like: 1tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp mustard seeds, half teaspoon fenugreek seeds, bit of fresh ginger, bit of turmeric and a chopped chilli sound?

OP posts:
luisgarcia · 28/03/2012 20:30

It sounds delicious!

I mix up batches of this stuff and would use a couple of tsps for the dhal.

2 parts chopped coriander leaf
3 parts cumin
1 part fenugreek
1 part paprika
1 part garam masala
1 part turmeric
1 bay leaf
1 part chili powder
1 part mustard powder
1 part black pepper

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/03/2012 20:37

Brilliant. Do you mean fresh coriander leaf and if so, how do you store it? And what do you mean by mustard powder?

Bread and Butter Pudding

Soak two large handfuls of sultanas in ginger wine (or brandy) overnight

Cut the crusts of white bread and cut into triangles.

Melt some butter - dip the bread triangles in the butter and cover the bottom of a dish with them.

Add a handful of the soaked sultanas

Add the next layer of bread triangles - this time spread the with marmalade as well.

Continue layering bread/sultanas until the dish is nearly full

Beat two (or more) eggs with full-fat milk, add some sugar - if there is any liquid left from the sultana bowl add that

POur the egg/milk mixture over the bread - leave to soak in (a few hours if possible)

SPrinkle the top with brown sugar

Bake slowly in a lowish oven

Serve with cream or icecream (ginger icecream is lovely)

luisgarcia · 28/03/2012 22:10

@Remus, yes I use fresh. I store it in an airtight jar, and I usually use a batch within a week or so so it doesn't hang around long. Mustard powder is ground (black) mustard seeds. (I use a coffee grinder to pulverise the seeds in a few seconds).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/03/2012 22:58

Liking the gingerwine/ginger icecream combo - Pantry (and I still get all excited when I see your name! Wonder if I should change mine again?).

Thanks again, Luis.

I realise you want personal recommendations here, but when I'm looking for a recipe, I tend to search tastespotting.com and choose the picture that appeals most.

NettoSuperstar · 29/03/2012 12:36

OMG how have I not seen that website before?
I've spent all morning drooling/bookmarking .
As if I didn't obsess over food enough beforeBlush

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2012 19:35

Report back - Have just made yummy pan of yellow earthy garlicy gorgeousness by:

Fry onion, 2 crushed cloves garlic, 2 whole but pierced green chillis - not to colour just to show to the pan.
Add turmeric, fresh ginger, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, mustard seeds.
Add lentils and water and cook until lentils nearly done.
Beat around a bit to go silky.
Add half tub coconut cream and a good squeeze lemon.
Top with tarka-esque thing consisting of onions and garlic - browned / more cumin / some garam massalla and a few red chilli flakes.

It was absolutely perfect and I will deffo do it again.

Now off to investigate that website.

Thank you Coffee but not sure you've posted the right link, as that's come up with a chicken dish.
