I've never cooked it before but was considering trying it. DP's not sure and thinks it might be one of those meals you would have had to have been brought up on to appreciate it. It's a traditional scottish/irish meal IIRC? I think it might be one of those things that doesn't look too appetizing but actually tastes really yummy.

Why only English members? Confused

nappyaddict · 19/03/2012 09:59

Actually what I should have said was non-CELTIC mners. Cos it is a traditional celtic meal I think? So you can't answer if you're Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Cornish or Manx Grin

If it was something similar to Cottage Pie, well-seasoned, well-flavoured, not fatty or runny and had a nice hot-pot topping it would be fine. If it's just some grey, greasy, sloppy daw-daw creation with no flavour it wouldn't appeal at all.

Codandchips · 19/03/2012 13:26

why mince?
id say chunky meat

ExitPursuedByABear · 19/03/2012 13:27

I am not a meat eater but make some lovely concoctions with veggie mince. As long as it has a lovely topping or accompaniments and is tasty then can't see a problem.

nappyaddict · 23/03/2012 16:13

Cos mince is cheaper than chunks of meat.

I was brought up in England, English Dad, Scottish Mum.
Have now lived in Scotland for 10 years, DD born and brought up here (to give you background).
Anyway, minced beef stew, or hotpot is something I'd never heard of, or at least it was never called that.
Mince and dumplings is what I was brought up with, as was mince and tatties, we still have this.
It's great food.

I'm sure I read another thread on here recently saying mince is a weird meal.
Mince is really popular here, delicious and comforting.

Savoury mince is great.

You need Aitch to arrive, she knows how to cook a decent savoury mince.

MrsKitty · 23/03/2012 17:10

MMmmmmmm Mince & Tatties. I LOVED this when I was small - My Granma made the best mince & tatties (and Neeps) ever! I've started cooking it for my DC too - I think I've finally mastered it Grin.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 23/03/2012 17:13

Mince and onions in gravy, mash and carrots. Bloody lovely.

Ambrosius · 23/03/2012 18:02

Mmmmm mince and taties! I had a scottish grandma who always made it for me though...

iscream · 24/03/2012 10:09

Well, I'm Canadian with British background and dh, and am going to answer.
My mom sometimes made what she called hamburger(we say that rather than mince, but it is the same thing) gravy and served it over potatoes, so did my friends mom. It was quite bland the way they made it- ground beef, chopped onions, salt, pepper and flour/milk. Both are from Nova Scotia and I think it may be a regional type of meal there? Both came from poor families, and that would be a way to make a cheap meal.
My mom also made hamburger stew, which had better flavour but I didn't care for the texture of the ground meat. I prefer meatball stew or regular stew.
But I googled that hotpot, and it looks good, I am making it tomorrow for dinner. www.chef-secrets.com/lancashire-hot-pot/12/

I don't like mince.

I only use chunks.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 24/03/2012 10:27

Mmm, love mince stew. I use Heinz tomato soup in mine, it's lovely.

greensnail · 24/03/2012 10:36

I love mince and tatties. I'm half scottish though so grew up with it.

LesAnimaux · 24/03/2012 11:05

No, but then I don't like minced beef.

suzikettles · 24/03/2012 11:23

I've never heard of mince stew. I guess mince & tatties is the same thing though? Mmmmmmm mince Grin

QuintessentialShadows · 24/03/2012 11:26

You are discriminating against a whole bunch of valuable mumsnetters.

How dare you.

Maybe I also have an opinion on the above question?

(I dont actually.)

PigletJohn · 24/03/2012 11:29

tell her you've moved to England, Quint.

How will she know?

DilysPrice · 24/03/2012 11:30

Sounds horrible was my first response, but mince and tatties can be great and DH cooks a lovely lamb mincd curry, so actually might be nice.

QuintessentialShadows · 24/03/2012 11:43

True, I love a good mince stew, and generally love "English cooking". Cant help with the cooking bit though.

My only concern, of course, is bathrooms. Wink

iscream · 25/03/2012 08:04

I have that hot pot recipe I posted up thread in the oven now. I prepared the amount they said, but have a bowl full of leftover sliced raw potatoes, so if you make it be careful not to peel too many.

HamblesHandbag · 25/03/2012 12:09

I am half english, half scottish (living in england) SO SHOULDN"T BE HERE APPARENTLY!

But I bloody love mince and tatties. I really really really really do Smile

I don't know any english people without tainted (scottish) blood that love it though Sad

BusinessTrills · 25/03/2012 12:13

Chunky beef would be nicer.

But I imagine a mince thing with potatoes could be nice.
