Oh gawd, I'm cringing to hold my had up and say, "my name is HamblesHandbag and I am surprisingly taken by this cook book" Blush

It's so schmaltzy and twee in style, but take away all the sugary shite about how families love each other the recipes look really good!

I've just bought it yesterday, so not had chance to try anything yet but I will.

Have you tried owt yet iamme43?

VacantExpression · 17/03/2012 12:16

I haven't got it but after the threads on here its just gone onto my wish list!

Arf@MrsMagnolia I looked at it in Sainsburys yesterday and might get it from the library. But Fay Ripley has a new one out too.

I actually made the fishfingers from Fay's first book - I used Special K for the coating, and they were lovely.

coffeeinbed · 17/03/2012 14:00

Her style makes my teeth itch.
"From my mother for my daughter" - how precious can you get!

coffeeinbed · 17/03/2012 14:00

Oh sorry OP.
Posted by mistake.

iamme43 · 17/03/2012 15:21

You do not have to apoligise, mumsnetters never do as they are told.

Her style makes my teeth itch.
She hardly has a style it is a recipe book, thats all.

Going to look at the fish fingers in Fay Ripleys book.

I wasn't very serious when I apologised.Grin
Of course I can post.
Now, for the "recipe book" - it's not just one though, is it. That's how it's marketed.
It's a celebrity cook book. She is the USP, her face is on the cover, of course it has to have style - her style.
And the title is so cringingly sentimental.
I do think a cook book needs style. A good cook book.

nkf · 17/03/2012 15:44

Is this the cook book that involves coco pops and mince?

landofsoapandglory · 17/03/2012 15:45

I have it and have made the banana cake. I absolutely loved it.

Can I say something about the title? She explained why she called it that in a interview. Her mum died when she was 16, and a lot of the memories and the things they shared were about food and cooking IIRC. The recipes in the book are recipes from her friends and famliy members that she would like to pass on. I think that is quite sweet actually.

I have both of Fay Ripley's books, I prefer the old one to the new one if I am honest. We are having sticky ginger chicken tonight, from her old book, it is a firm favourite with our family.

iamme43 · 17/03/2012 15:45

I suppose I just like cooking and I am up to buy any recipe book if it interests me.

I try recipes on line just random ones don't you know, no style needed there.

Most cooks are celebs first though are they not.......... apart from the real chefs then they turn into celeb machines.

Its all good.

The banana cake has just gone in the oven.

The banana cake is ''too die for''

Blu · 17/03/2012 20:10

Don't be ridiculous, nkf.
No-one would mix breakfast cereals with meat.
Pay attention.
It's chicken, mayo and rice krispies.

habbibu · 17/03/2012 20:16

Most cooks are celebs first? I wouldn't have said that.

iamme43 · 17/03/2012 20:25

The ones that are most popular are.

Very few people knew who Jamie Oliver or Gordon Ramsey were until they because tv stars thus they were celebs first.

iamme43 · 17/03/2012 21:48

Of course they were but when they got the tv gig

it was plug plug plug.

The cheffing then went out of the window and the celeb kicked in.

habbibu · 17/03/2012 22:14

Yes, but they were still chefs first. Michel Roux had michelin stars before masterchef. Most cook book writers are trained chefs or professional food writers.

HOMEMADECHUTNEY · 17/03/2012 22:51

I do think the book looks quite good - I heard her being interviewed here in Ireland by someone who loves to cook, and he was very complimentary about the recipes.

I agree the style is off-putting, but when paging through the book I read about her mother's death when LF was 16, and i must say the emotion seemed very sincere and heartfelt. It made me (almost) forgive the tweeness.

I am planning to try the rice krispie chicken thingie Blush, and have heard that the katsu chicken is delicious.

Still don't think I could bare to part with the ?20, will probably just hover in my local bookshop memorising the recipes Grin.

HOMEMADECHUTNEY · 17/03/2012 22:52

Nor could I bear to part with money!

iamme43 · 18/03/2012 08:35

It is £7 in tesco for anyone who is interested.

landofsoapandglory · 18/03/2012 18:35

Ok, just a quick report back and credit where it's due.

I made the rice krispie chicken tonight and it was bloody lovely. I heard DH being all sniffy about it on the phone to MIL earlier so was praying it was going to be nice and it really was. We had it with new potatoes and salad. .

Another one of her recipes on our meal plan this week its the toad in the hole with little sausage meat balls instead of sausages. I'll let you know how it goes[end]

landofsoapandglory · 18/03/2012 18:35

[end] should be Smile ffsBlush

HamblesHandbag · 18/03/2012 19:28

I made the chocolate cake and it was fine. The sponge was very pale so I'm wondering if I only put one tablespoon of drinking chocolate in instead of two, but one more wouldn't have made it properly chocolatey any way would it?

The 'icing' was just chocolate and butter melted and poured over, I think I'd prefer something that sets really.

I'm not much of a baker anyhoo, it was just as a mother's day thing, so I'll be more interested in the savoury recipes.
