Nope. Delia, Nigella, Gordon Ramsey, Heston, Hugh, Rick Stein were all either established food writers or running their own successful restaurants before they were on TV.

Jamie was a bit of a TV product - he was just a sous chef before he was 'discovered' for the Naked Chef, and people like the Hairy Bikers are manufactured for TV - but at least Jamie now has his own string of very successful restaurants.

I'll second the Fay Ripley sticky chicken recipe. It's lovely and really easy. Sadly I cooked it so much DH has gone right off it, so it's off the menu now. Sad

I remember Lisa Faulkner really annoyed me on Masterchef. Didn't she cry all the time?

Toad with sausage meat balls is in Nigella "Kitchen". Is it really drinking chocolate in a cake recipe? How odd.

I was given it yesterday for mother's day. I like the fact it's divided in seasons but I haven't cooked anything yet.

I think her mum died when she was young and she adopted her daughter so cooking is important to her in creating a sense of family. Cooking her mother's recipes is a way to make a connection to the granny her daughter will never know. I think that's lovely, but then my daughter will never know one of her grannys but DH loves it when I cook recipes his mum wrote down and we know them as granny x's cake etc.

yes habbibu, drinking chocolate. would it usually be cocoa or something? I've never made chocolate cake before.

I really don't like the prose style. I understand the food/family thing that lots of us feel about feeding loved ones, but it's just not very good writing and I'd prefer to just have good recipes without the schmaltz.

Nigella does that kind of writing so much better.

Oh, yes, cocoa, definitely. Need it to get depth of flavour.

I haven't seen the book but the recipes here sound very 70s - convenience foods used in slightly odd ways, etc - kind of kitsch and charming, but perhaps superseded now?

I now have my hands on this cook book by LF. What shall I try first?! Just don't know what to pick, as all the recipes look pretty good. Any suggestions?

Have only tried 2 recipes so far, one with great success (rice krispie chicken) and one that was a bit blah (tory's crispy chicken). Trying the cabonara tonight.

The Rice Krispie chicken is excellent. I've also made the drinking chocolate cake, all feedback was good but my family could be really good liars.
