LOLOL you've solved my problem.
DH's buns are henceforth going to be known as Fat Bastards

(Domestic harmony restored.)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 08/04/2012 19:28

The hot cross buns I did were heavy but not in a bad way, definitely not fluffy pillows, but very tasty.

Arf at Fat Bastards!

TheScottishPlayer · 08/04/2012 19:49

I'm def going to have a bash at hot cross buns tomorrow. I made the HFW choc and beetroot brownies today and they were a huge hit.

TunipTheVegemal · 08/04/2012 20:01

I used the recipe from the first Great British Bake-Off book. It uses partly wholemeal flour and you pipe the cross on, which is easier than dribbling it on with a teaspoon like Nigella says (and the recipes I've used in the past.)
It was not heavy but it would have been lighter if dd had left me alone to get on with it instead of following me around going 'Isittimetodothecrossesyet? Isittimetodothecrossesyet?' until I gave in even though they weren't properly proved.

TunipTheVegemal · 08/04/2012 20:02

yay for the HFW choc and beetroot brownies! Deliciously chocolately and you can pat yourself on the back for getting another vegetable into your family!

VikingVagine · 09/04/2012 09:54

I really miss the pillowy softness of rolls you can buy in the UK, and would like to make my own (same for soft hot cross buns) because everything here has got a real crunchy crust to it, and they don't even do soft burger baps or hotdog rolls. When I lived I the UK I'd buy nice granary bread in the local bakers and wouldn't touch white sliced bread with a barge pole, now that I cann't get it I crave it's sweet softness (don't even mention chip butties ).

I gave up toast for Lent Viking and on Saturday went out and bought a loaf of thick white sliced for my Sunday morning toast, it was lovely .

I'd love to be able to wander down to the boulangerie for a croissant in the morning though....

TunipTheVegemal · 12/04/2012 16:18

I made a Grant Loaf yesterday, am really pleased with it. I've never liked my 100% wholemeal bread machine loaf but this had a really nice crumbly texture. I didn't actually mix in Ken (because it was 750g flour, would need a Chef for that....) but next time will do smaller quantities and use him Smile

Hello wood pussies, I though you might like to know that we might be getting a baking topic Grin

VikingVagine · 23/04/2012 16:24

Who was it who had water infiltration issues in the bottom of the mixing bowl? Well up until now I've washed the bowl by hand, but yesterday I had a big space in the dishwasher that needed filling so I thought what the hell. Big mistake, it now has water stuck in the plastic bottom, I think it must be something to do with the high temperature of the dishwasher which might have temporarily warped the metal of the bowl, letting water in.

DO NOT PUT THE BOWL IN THE DISHWASHER ON A HOT CYCLE!

Other than that I'm still very happy with it, I use it several times a week and accidentally discovered how well it slices carrots (I wanted to grate some for a cake and put the blade upside down) even DH said "why didn't you tell me it could do that?"

Baking topic has appeared!

OvO · 26/04/2012 17:11

Just followed link to this thread from gigantic prospero thread. Just got mine today in Sainsburys for £79.99 Grin. I was lusting after them when the first thread was posted but had no spare cash then. Going to go read all this thread and rest of the other thread for all the tips and recipes. Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 26/04/2012 18:47

Bargain! I can't remember how much mine was now but it was certainly more than that.

VikingVagine · 05/05/2012 19:03

Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do with extra egg whites other than meringues? I often use a yolk or two to make a pasta sauce and we've had enough Eaton Mess for a life time since I bought Woody!

You could whisk them and fold them into lightly beaten eggs for an extra fluffy omelette.

Mr Mixer is doing a great job with bread making every weekend and made some lovely tortillas the other night. Ooh and Viennese fingers yesterday.

rockinhippy · 05/05/2012 19:10

Snow cake - can be almond or vanilla snow cake - its something my Mum used to make for us as DCs & my Nana before that - DD & DH eat the lot before I can =, the greedy beggars LOVE it- all white ingredients & no yoke makes it ultra light & fluffy

rockinhippy · 05/05/2012 19:14

THIS Looks very similar to the recipe I use - I use unsalted butter & cream & either almond or vanilla essence

VikingVagine · 06/05/2012 09:01

Thanks, and thank you MNHQ for moving the topic!

I think I have broken my Kenwood Sad

I was making a smoothie and didn't realise the base of the liquidiser was not locked in properly so it was blitzing and the smoothie has leaked all over and inside the unit where the motor is.
I have no idea how I am going to be able to clean it out of there so I think it is dead Sad

VikingVagine · 08/05/2012 16:48

It might be worth contacting kenwood to ask for advice, I can't imagine it would be repaired under the guarantee, but they might be able to give you advice on cleaning it. I think I'd get my screwdriver out and sod the guarantee.

rockinhippy · 09/05/2012 09:10

cherry I've had the same thing happen with mine a few times, usually with cheese sauce Hmm & they DO survive it - mine still works fine, just took a lot of kitchen roll & some tipping around of the main unit to get it to run out - that & a spray of vinegar with tea tree to stop any mould forming in the cracks

IMO thats the only bug bear with the Prospero, the older Kenwood liquidiser jugs didn't come apart for cleaning, so no risk of it "blowing up" - personally I found the old jug easy enough to clean, much easier than cleaning the whole damned machine - which I've found isn't always down to it not being clicked into place properly, sometime too large lumps for it to process can have it unclick itself Confused

HalleLouja · 09/05/2012 16:50

I was on here ages ago and just marking place.

I love my Prospero. I use it all the time. Today we made smoothies and we have done that quite a few times. My last blender / food processor were hardly used this gets used lots. Mainly because it is on my work surface and reminds me of its existence. It seems to do a good job too.

The only gripe I have is when using the grating blades bits don't get grated and end up stuck.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/05/2012 19:50

Same here, I only used my old FP about twice a year, whereas Mr Mixer the Prospero is getting used 2 or 3 times a week and that's without having the FP attachment, I've only used the blender about twice as well, so it's nearly all mixing, beating and kneading.
