I haven't.

Have you?

Was it as vile as it looks?

Nope. (Haven't tried, that is.)

winnybella · 23/02/2012 22:00

Yes. In Poland it's served in a soup ('flaki'). Very good (and I'm not one for offal, generally speaking).

maddening · 23/02/2012 22:01

I used to not even look at the butchers stalls in the market as they always had tripe on show - and that was before turning veggie - the idea makes me feel iffy

winnybella · 23/02/2012 22:01

here

2kidsintow · 23/02/2012 22:02

Yes.
And Yes.

My Grandad once served me this. Cooked in the traditional English way. Poached in milk, with onions.

Was V I L E!

Nasty texture. Not much taste.
Never again!

Beamur · 23/02/2012 22:03

My Grandparents were v keen on offal and tripe was served up to me as a child, so yes, I have tried it, but didn't like it - more to do with how it looked though rather than tasted. It looked like the foam backing of a carpet to me at that age. My Granny used to make tripe and onions in a broth and I would have the broth and onions but without tripe.

quirkychick · 23/02/2012 22:03

I had brown tripe in France. It was truly horrible.

Theas18 · 23/02/2012 22:03

I used to eat it as a kid with salt pepper and vinegar. It's not bad like that though I woudnt rush to have it again. Legacy of northern ( ish) parents I guess.

However cooked tripe is something else - nauseating gloopy texture with no flavour at all.

catgirl1976 · 23/02/2012 22:04

No.

I don't do offal

GoingForGoalWeight · 23/02/2012 22:04

Possibly if i was about to die of hunger, if not then HELL NO! Envy

McHappyPants2012 · 23/02/2012 22:05

that was the problem this dish is scotish :)

Scuttlebutter · 23/02/2012 22:05

We feed it to our dogs - they love it. Must say, I'm not terribly squeamish, but the smell, texture and appearance is vile - cannot see anything remotely appealing about it.

MirandaGoshawk · 23/02/2012 22:06

Ugh, have just googled it. Wish I hadn't. It looks like something you'd use to insulate the loft. And probably tastes like it.

troisgarcons · 23/02/2012 22:06

I dont eat offal due to hydatid ........... you may wish to google, and yes, i've seen the first hand effects of it affecting brain and lungs.

Sparklingbrook · 23/02/2012 22:06

My Mum and Dad used to feed it to our dog. To stop the smell Dad used to buy it frozen and saw it up on the patio to freeze at home. It was green and vile. Sad

southeastastra · 23/02/2012 22:07

my nan used to like it, the look of it stayed with me and makes me feel ill whenever tripe is mentioned

2kidsintow · 23/02/2012 22:07

Oops....Sorry McHappyPants!

toboldlygo · 23/02/2012 22:07

Yes. It was unpleasant - weird texture, no real taste.

Raw green tripe is a staple part of the dogs' diet and the smell of it in its unwashed form is boakworthy.

PlumpDogPillionaire · 23/02/2012 22:08

OMG - surely tripe for humans can't smell anything like the stuff for dogs.
Say it isn't so - someone - please...

McHappyPants2012 · 23/02/2012 22:08

trosi, done a quick google and that sound scary.

squeakytoy · 23/02/2012 22:09

the smell of it afterwards from my dog is enough to warrant the wearing of a gas mask

I grew up in a northern town and all my grandparents and older relatives ate it on a weekly basis... I didnt mind it raw with vinegar and pepper..

LaVitaBellissima · 23/02/2012 22:09

DP loves it, I've tried it but am not keen.

He likes it raw with lemon, salt and pepper or cooked with tomatoes. In Italy they always have loads on display in the butchers shops, very common to eat it there.

maybenow · 23/02/2012 22:10

yes, i served myself some once in peru and it was ghastly... only discovered AFTER that it was tripe - so i know it wasn't my prejudice.

babybythesea · 23/02/2012 22:11

Nope - I feed it to my dog and it doesn't smell nice - and I don't put stuff that doesn't smell nice in my mouth!

Salmotrutta · 23/02/2012 22:12

I did once have some bob up at me out of a Spanish soup Shock

It looked disgusting.

Fortunately I hadn't swallowed any
