I think Saint Hugh of RiverCottage is going to save me £120 this month!

Last week we had 4 veggie meals, 2 fish and a braising steak stew on Sunday, I made 2 soups from his veg book too. The week's shop was £94 (previous weeks had been £130 and £140, we average £130). This week I've planned 5 veggie meals, 1 fish and sausages on Sunday and another 2 soups and the week's shop comes to £93ish! I've also decided to cut out buying processed snacks so haven't bought mini cheddars or biscuits and have made home made cheese and ham muffins, and pitta with hummus for kids' snacks instead. At this rate we will be £120 better off at the end of this month.

Dh is finding he is more farty than usual though Grin

Ok. Thanks for the advice.
Sounds like something I might like to do but fail miserably and end up feeling worse for having a family unfriendly job HmmBlush I'm not sure how likely I am to start dealing with spelt after a 12 hour shift, although a pre made soup might be ok. Doesn't seem as appealing when your exhausted and in need of stodge though!!

hmm. I'm not sure. It all sounds idylic but in reality....I doubt myself and my lifestyle! Ho hum.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 29/02/2012 11:23

OMG the dressed puy lentils were amazing :)

trying risonio tonight

VikingVagine · 29/02/2012 11:45

Just did the cherry toms (with roast chicken) and they were really really nice. I'm looking forward to getting my own copy but I'll have to be patient!

TunipTheVegemal · 29/02/2012 11:48

where is everyone finding their risoni? People keep saying the risoniotto is nice but I can't find it in my big Sainsburys, my health food shop or either of my two delis.

TunipTheVegemal · 29/02/2012 11:52

Dontask - you could start small and just aim to do a couple a week.
The first chapter 'Comfort food and feasts' has some damn good stodge in it.

If anyone doesn't know whether to get/can't afford the book, a lot of the recipes are online at the Guardian website. Google any of the recipes here that you fancy and there's a good chance you might find it online.

TunipTheVegemal · 29/02/2012 12:47

a selection

RecipeJunkie · 29/02/2012 13:20

I luurrve HFW, and at the risk of shameles;ly promoting my blog, I've cooked quite alot from Veg Everyday - it's my current recipe book fix: recipe-junkie.blogspot.com

macaroni peas on the menu this evening...

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 29/02/2012 14:50

Hi all. I'm a veg everyday lover too, although I haven't tried as many recipes as a lot of you have!

I loved the sweet potato gratin but found the biryani a bit bland if I'm honest.

Recipejunkie that didn't work could you do a link please?

deaconblue · 29/02/2012 15:01

Tunip you need orzo pasta from waitrose or ocado

OP posts:
TunipTheVegemal · 29/02/2012 15:12

ah, Ocado!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 29/02/2012 18:19

Had the tempura veg with sweet chilli dip tonight, gorgeous. And I don't even like chilli.

fergoose · 29/02/2012 18:20

Tesco sell the Orzo pasta

VikingVagine · 29/02/2012 18:23

I tried the carrot and chick pea in pita breads this evening, I thought it was really nice, but DH said it was lacking something, although he did eat it all and I'd it was filling. Will have to wait and see if he raids the fridge later on...

LaFilleSurLePont · 29/02/2012 19:04

I had the squash wrap, which was very nice. The pitta breads didn't work out,and I was too lazy to make flatbread,so I used some naan bread I had in the freezer. They worked well.

TunipTheVegemal · 29/02/2012 19:31

we're having the roasted aubergine and potato tonight, served with fried halloumi and a reprise of the cherry toms.

CelticPromise · 29/02/2012 19:36

I love this book.

This one and the Everyday one are my desert island cookbooks. Anyone else tried the carrot humous? It's lush.

I love the chachouka but there isn't a lot of it especially by Hugh's standards. I made double and there still wasn't loads, wonder if there is a misprint in the book? maybe I am just greedy.

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 29/02/2012 19:59

Nope, I agree. DH didn't enjoy it the last time I made it so we won't have it again for a while, but I used to cook the recipe (for 4) for two of us and serve it with chips

TunipTheVegemal · 29/02/2012 20:05

y to there not being enough chachouka.
There are quite a few recipes that have left us hungry. I think the problem is it's not made clear sometimes whether recipes are meant to be a main meal on their own or served with a side dish or two.
(I think the book could do with a few more serving suggestions too - it's not always easy to work out what would go nicely together.)

Just ordered my copy today.
I'm not well and stuck on the couch atm, but can't wait to try out some of these dishes when I'm better.
We love veggie food anyway, and since I'm nt really eating now, it'll do me good to get loads of nutrients.

RecipeJunkie · 29/02/2012 20:51

hello MyLifeisStillChaotic - I'm quite new on here, trying to work it all out. Does this work better? recipe-junkie.blogspot.com/

i made the sweet potaot gratin out of a kind of orbid curiosity - I could never quite bring myself to make Nigella's marchmallo topped sweet potato mash on Feast so this seemed like a good compromise. No one really liked it but the left overs were lovely with some stock and chilli sauce as a kind of laksa... I blogged about that too somewhere.

Made Macaroni Peas for the first time this evening - GREAT recipe!

RecipeJunkie · 29/02/2012 20:53

(sorry for the bad spelling I have a big bandage on my thumb from where I gave myself third degree burns pouring off some pork fat last night (like, 250 degree hot pork fat straigt out of the oven) so my fingers aren't working too well)

FoofFighter · 29/02/2012 20:55

Just marking my place ready for when my book comes Grin

Rj ouch that sounds really painful!

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 29/02/2012 21:15

Yes it did thanks :)

Hope you're better soon netto

AngelDog · 29/02/2012 21:20

I made the porotos granados today which was okay but DH said 'it could do with being a bit more flavoursome. Perhaps a bit of curry powder?' I didn't have any fresh oregano/marjoram so I just used dried - was that why, do you think?
