I think Saint Hugh of RiverCottage is going to save me £120 this month!

Last week we had 4 veggie meals, 2 fish and a braising steak stew on Sunday, I made 2 soups from his veg book too. The week's shop was £94 (previous weeks had been £130 and £140, we average £130). This week I've planned 5 veggie meals, 1 fish and sausages on Sunday and another 2 soups and the week's shop comes to £93ish! I've also decided to cut out buying processed snacks so haven't bought mini cheddars or biscuits and have made home made cheese and ham muffins, and pitta with hummus for kids' snacks instead. At this rate we will be £120 better off at the end of this month.

Dh is finding he is more farty than usual though Grin

Hugh has done an amazing job at bringing veggie food to the masses and I applaud him for that! I've been veggie for 30 years now and I only cook veggie food - that way I taste what I cook.

People feel often feel sorry for my meat eating dh but he doesn't need their pity he loves veggie food when it's cooked properly - it's still often not great in restaurants though - more of a lazy after thought. Every restaurant we choose is done so on the strength of their veggie option.

Beamur · 17/02/2012 20:13

Hugh book is a veggie book aimed at meat eaters palates methinks.

bibbitybobbityhat · 17/02/2012 20:17

I think its a shame that such a deeply committed carnivore had to be the one who brought vegetarianism to the masses.

What I actually think happened is that he had run out of ideas for his next book and so he and his marketing team came up with the idea of capturing the veggers.

TunipTheVegemal · 17/02/2012 20:22

It's not a backtrack; the River Cottage Meat Book goes on about how we should all be eating less meat but higher quality and using the whole animal. Writing a really appealing vegetable cookery book is a way to get people to eat more vegetables and evidently it's working because it is a hit with meat eaters.

BettyBathroom · 17/02/2012 20:24

Beamur I agree it's a great book for meat eaters - but that's no bad thing.

PuraVida · 17/02/2012 20:24

Is it the 'veg every day' book?

I'm shit at eating veg. Could it help me?

hambo · 17/02/2012 20:25

After reading all your comments I am going to get his book....is there only the one veggie hugh book then???

TunipTheVegemal · 17/02/2012 20:27

yes, it's called River Cottage Veg Everyday

FiteFuaite · 17/02/2012 20:31

Also wondering which book it is....the recipes sound gorgeous....

PuraVida · 17/02/2012 20:33

That one click amazon is dangerous. Mind you if it gets us eating more veg it's £9 well spent

BettyBathroom · 17/02/2012 21:03

I think it could only be a deeply committed carnivore who brought veggie food to the masses. Meat eaters are deeply suspicious of veggie food. Anyway others have tried but they haven't succeeded to anywhere near the same extent. I like Hugh (the veg book is less interesting to me), he has done a great deal to highlight animal welfare and he isn't a two faced shit - slagging off vegetarians then appearing in a Veggie magazine with his selection of crap recipes like slimy James Martin did.

Beamur · 17/02/2012 21:11

Hughs book has got my hard core carnivore DP eating meat free meals - this is nothing short of a miracle. Even more so as he chose and cooked them too!

alana39 · 17/02/2012 22:08

Can second his baba ganoush having just made it. Rather a lot of it had disappeared before dinner served Blush

electricslide · 18/02/2012 11:39

Think I'm going to order this too!

AnonymousBird · 18/02/2012 12:43

Beamur - ditto!

baba ganoush is on my list for next week now!!!!

AngelDog · 18/02/2012 14:22

Bah, PuraVida, did you have to mention the bargainous Amazon price?

PuraVida · 18/02/2012 14:29

WTF is baba ganouch?. Does it taste like fillet steak [hopeful]

deaconblue · 18/02/2012 17:18

pippop1 · 18/02/2012 18:15

And he has lovely curly hair too.

worzelswife · 18/02/2012 20:42

'Hugh book is a veggie book aimed at meat eaters palates methinks.'
I think this is genius.

I really like meat. Not all types, but I love a nice roast chicken and bacon and sausages and roast lamb. I used to sniff at vegetarian food as I thought it was all boring. I wouldn't have considered cutting out or eating less meat at all if it wasn't for another meat eater saying 'cook like this, it's delicious.' He has totally won me over. I'm eating so much better now and meat hardly tempts me at all, I've gone right off it, other than than the odd occasion.

I'm making the baba ganoush next week. I made his white bean hummus and that was delicious so I'm looking forward to the baba ganoush.

yehudiwho · 18/02/2012 21:13

Having kale and mushroom lasagne tonight

TunipTheVegemal · 18/02/2012 21:25

I agree Worzelswife.
I'm amazed how little I've wanted meat. I haven't turned veggie, we're just cooking all our evening meals from this book, so I'm still eating bacon and eggs for brunch or a ham sandwich for lunch, but my meat consumption must have gone right down.

Squash stuffed with leeks here tonight.

Brambleschooks · 18/02/2012 22:18

Love it - my dh has started to do proper cooking for the first time in our 25 years together. It's got to be some kind of miracle!

AngelDog · 20/02/2012 08:13

We've always eaten a lot of veggie food. DH is an ex-vegetarian and despite that (or because of it!) has always complained that we don't have enough meat. He'll eat the veggie food I cook, but rarely will he ask for something again.

So far he's said that everything I've made from Veg Everyday is worth making again. :)

I think part of the key is having a reasonable amount of protein in many of the recipes. I'm on a high-protein diet and it's made me realise that low levels of protein are the reason why lots of veggie food left me still feeling hungry.
