I think Saint Hugh of RiverCottage is going to save me £120 this month!

Last week we had 4 veggie meals, 2 fish and a braising steak stew on Sunday, I made 2 soups from his veg book too. The week's shop was £94 (previous weeks had been £130 and £140, we average £130). This week I've planned 5 veggie meals, 1 fish and sausages on Sunday and another 2 soups and the week's shop comes to £93ish! I've also decided to cut out buying processed snacks so haven't bought mini cheddars or biscuits and have made home made cheese and ham muffins, and pitta with hummus for kids' snacks instead. At this rate we will be £120 better off at the end of this month.

Dh is finding he is more farty than usual though Grin

If its a version of what I grew up calling 'shakshuka' (eggs in tomato/olive/aubegine/oniony type sauce with lots of herbs and sometimes some chili) then its bloody great with pita bread and lots of hummous (and baba ghanoush) on the side...but fab with crusty bread too. Not tried it with chips but reckon you wouldn't go wrong.

Of course, I still don't have the blinkin book (come on Amazon!) so can't really comment....but getting hungry all the same...

Bibbob · 16/03/2012 13:44

I got mine from the book people for £9.99

yehudiwho · 16/03/2012 17:50

I love this book and all Hugh books . Would recommend the chilli ( kale lasagna nice but mine came out a bit dry)

AnonymousBird · 16/03/2012 18:44

With Chips! Inspired! Posh egg and chips! Friday night has just been upgraded... thanks chaotic - great idea.

But I also like the bread/baba ghanoush option. Next time we do it, I'll do the HFW Baba with it, but tonight, chips it is!!!

Have just had a good look through it. Far too many recipes involving tinned tomatoes for my liking (and a real crime in veggie books generally) but I like his writing style and the fact that most recipes seem v straightforward. Those Murguez (sp?) chickpeas and chips look lovely. The mushroom stoup looks absolutely vile though - like swamp water.

We had the Chachouka with some tortilla wraps, as the recipe was very similar to 'mexican baked eggs' from a student cookbook I have had for years - the recipe definitely only serves 2 and would be great with chips.
Parsnip and Ginger soup was a success, although I put far too much Ginger in - I was going to give a little bit to dd but thought better of it.
Going to do swede with sage and onions tomorrow as part of a sunday lunch - anyone got any suggestions for what might go with it?
Still unsure of what to do with the cauliflower, decided not to do pakora as I don't really do deep frying. There is a cauliflower stir fry recipe which i might do, but dp might not be too impressed if I presented him with a plate of cauliflower for his tea - maybe I could add some tofu to make it more substantial?

AnonymousBird · 17/03/2012 10:34

The Chachouka was delicious!!!! At the last minute, we didn't have with chips as DH walked through the door with a fresh french stick that would not have kept overnight (he had remembered to pick one up, so I felt bad about saying I'd changed my mind to chips - but next time definitely!)

We are having shoulder of pork Blush with our swede and onions and sage tomorrow (actually, mine will be with rosemary).

The cauli stir fry came out well for us once and not so well the second time - no idea why as we followed the recipe both times, but just one of those things!! DH was a bit Hmm about it too- though luckily first time it really hit the spot, but both he and I were slightly underwhelmed second time around.

BettyBathroom · 17/03/2012 10:53

Hazelnut Try Saffron Caulifower - it's very tasty. If saffron is a bit too pricey, substitute with some turmeric.

chezchaos · 17/03/2012 14:24

I'm a long-time veggie so was hesitant about buying the book when i have loads already, but I'm very impressed. It's worth the cover price for the DIY pot noodle and curried bubble 'n sqeak alone, and I can see them becoming weekly staples in this house.

coffeeinbed · 17/03/2012 15:11

Just got this.
Looks great, have great plans for that stray bag on lentils in the cupboard.
And bought an extra butternut squash.

TunipTheVegemal · 17/03/2012 15:16

Does the DIY pot noodle work then? I was dubious so I haven't tried it!

chezchaos · 17/03/2012 18:15

Tunip, it's great with really fine rice noodles, and if you don't mind crunchy veg!

slowburner · 17/03/2012 19:50

Just watching river cottage veg again where Hugh visits the vegetarian chef and the family with three generations of vegetarians, are the recipes from that meal on the river cottage veg book cos they look a damn sight fastener that the sausages in my fridge!!!

It's the episode where they trial out the Buddha bowls on the construction site!

TunipTheVegemal · 17/03/2012 19:54

the Cambodian wedding day dip is, not sure about the others (sorry, we are trying to watch but distracted by children who won't stay in bed).

Blu · 17/03/2012 20:00

I've been doing sone HFW recipes since he cut his hair.

He just looked too scrofulous and unhygeinic before.

The curried fish pie from the 'Everyday' book is nice - but I used Value smoked mackerel instead of smoked haddock because of the cost of haddock, and the non-sustainability.

HOMEMADECHUTNEY · 17/03/2012 22:57

Ordered this book last night, on the strength of this thread - really looking forward to trying it out.

slowburner · 17/03/2012 23:13

see my DH looks quite unkempt lol

book ordered in time for supermarket shop on Tuesday, I have the River cottage cookbook and have to confess to never using it

leobeebs · 18/03/2012 18:57

Sorry havent read through all pages. All sounds delish. What is the name of the book please?

chezchaos · 19/03/2012 10:25

Leobeebs, it's Veg Every Day I think (not at home to check)

slowburner · 19/03/2012 19:04

River Cottage Veg Everyday

Mine arrived today, I wrote up the weeks food shop, seven meals, and spent £26, admittedly we didn't need Nappies or milk and I will defrost a casserole one night and have some chicken another night. And I had to buy DH some show polish and I had a smoothie and a cheeky bag of caramel waffles so that's £5 gone.

I cooked dhal and squash and chickpea stew. I also bought not made coriander naans, DD had a portion at 4.30 for her tea, then kept demanding it while I was warming up for our tea at 6 so served her up another portion! Three very clean bowls after tea and the house smells amazing.

shoppingbagsundereyes · 19/03/2012 20:07

We had the pasta with raw tomato tonight. Dead easy, dirt cheap and really tasty.

slowburner · 19/03/2012 20:18

Were you 'full' after? DH is mad about cycling and frequently complains he is hungry (I personally think he is bored) but I'm not sure pasta and raw times would last him more than about 20min!

Me and DD might have it thou, I like the look of the vegan pesto as well for DD

shoppingbagsundereyes · 19/03/2012 20:21

Dh had a huge portion! I made half the sauce recipe as it was just the two of us and did about 100g spaghetti for dh. He has just come home after an 8 mile run and isn't starving apparently. You could add big side salad for your dh

HOMEMADECHUTNEY · 20/03/2012 22:09

Dear God, please let my book arrive tomorrow!
