DH bought home a couple of bags of shopping from M&S the other night with some foodie goodies in them:

  1. pots of rice pudding with rhubarb compote ....can't stop yearning after the taste - they were wonderful! We had them heated up - omg so yummy. Rice pudding thick, creamy and sweet. Rhubarb bountiful, pink and nicely tart.

  2. brewed non alcoholic elderflower 'beer'. I stopped drinking over 3 years ago but often miss the taste of more grown up drinks (soft drinks are often so sweet and one dimensional). This has a really nice brewed flavour and is ligthly carbonated, giving a beery taste without the booze.

Also tried Oreos for the first time this week and I can see a serious addiction coming on!

Edited to say I used to think M&S food was pretty bland and that they only did English classics well - ever tried their sushi Hmm but I think things might be on the up!

You have made me want to eat Rice Pudding. Sounds lovely, bur possibly not as low calorie as I should be eating. Sad

Last week I tried onions pickled in balsamic vinegar. They were gorgeous= on their own and also sliced into a salad. They were quite expensive (in local health food shop) so thinking of doing my own next time I see some inexpensive balsamic vinegar.

Trills · 17/02/2012 08:28

Waitrose have balsamic pickled onions too.

nothing like as decadent as what you lot are talking about but heinz tomato soup makes for a fab base/sauce type thing

never thought of it before but on WW and it was very helpful as a one person low point quick start to a sauce (haf a tin)

Black pudding and saurkraut. This is a delicious lunchtime snack.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/02/2012 12:52

Yum to Oreos and yum to rice pudding and rhubarb.

Fry red onions with balsamic vinegar and grainy mustard and eat in a baguette with sausages (mine were veggie) and rocket. I have no idea how this has passed me by so long but it is lovely.

Not a recent discovery but delicious and therefore worth reminding people of: Yorkshire puddings with golden syrup and cream.

And another oldie but goodie - creme fraiche, good lemon curd, a big squeeze of lemon juice - mix in a little pot - eat with posh biscuits.

Total yoghurt - where on earth have I been hiding to have missed this stuff - even the fat free feels like a decadent treat.

Tickler cheddar - available from the Co op - sweet and mature with a soft crystaline texture, it's a fantastic every day cheddar.

Moo Cow organic uht skimmed milk - a great standby for times when you run out - it doesn't taste like UHT - don't be tempted to go for semi skimmed it's the devil's work!

Dulce de leche on crumpets - divine! It goes beautifully on crepe style pancakes, so we're well stocked for next week. Waitrose sell the proper Argentinian stuff.

Bibbo · 17/02/2012 19:17

Yorkshire puddings with golden syrup and cream sounds incredible!

I have recently found tuna mayo goes really well with olives but somehow it has to be the cheap pimento stuffed ones

Almond butter is gorgeous and goes really well on toast and in smoothies

Agave nectar - very honeylike but apparently low GI? lovely on crumps

Whirliwig72 · 17/02/2012 19:27

Yes to the yorkshire pudding! - that must be like a profiterole - drool!!! in fact I might bastardise the dulce de leche idea and make caramel ones :o Almond butter - now that sounds amazing!

Cheap red wine tastes better decanted - even into a jug.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/02/2012 21:02

Cashew nut butter is nice too.

BettyBathroom · 17/02/2012 21:21

Peach liquer and champagne - marriage made in heaven!

Whirliwig72 · 18/02/2012 16:05

Found out today juicing mangoes with their skins on gives a really fresh edge to the juice. 'discovered' fruit and nut chocolate when in hospital last autumn after the birth of DS2 - never liked it as a child but now ..... Wow it is truly awesome in it's crunchy chewiness!

Smoked Tobasco - it's made from chipotles and is fantastic on scrambled eggs, with cheddar and spring onions, for breakfast. I drenched my chorizo and goats' cheese pizza in it last night too.

thereistheball · 18/02/2012 19:33

Also this coffee spice rub which is not a new discovery, but is from South Africa and hard to find in the UK (and harder in France). However they have just created pouches of it, and their other rubs, which can be inserted into an airmail mailer. I ordered mine last week and tonight we are having coffee-rub steak which I can assure you is delicious.

Asinine · 18/02/2012 19:36

Peppa dew peppers in a jar, stuff with cream cheese, or with mozzarella or emmental then microwave.

FoofFighter · 18/02/2012 19:37

coffee steak? Confused

Mindy6 · 18/02/2012 19:41

I hate custard and am not too keen on bananas but .... Muller Light Banana custard yoghurt is delicious, add some fresh fruit and it a fine treat!

Also I dont like herbal teas, but have found Twinnings Sweet Fennel tea is NICE and Holland and Barret do a lovely Licquorice tea!

Too old to be pregnant - I think!

thereistheball · 18/02/2012 19:48

Foof - coffee steak. It's gorgeous.

FlyingTeapot · 18/02/2012 20:25

Vodka and diet lemonade Smile

BlastOff · 18/02/2012 23:38

Asinine - I've stuffed the pepperdew peppers with feta, then grind black pepper over the top - divine. But never microwaved them, just eat them cold.

How long do you microwave them for when you do it?
