pph it is £100!!!!!!!

i'm back to the drawing board aren't i.

poosticks.

so a slowcooked huge lamb shoulder like thing? that i can do for hours on the day and just tell him it is our special dinner for two (he is a bit ditsy and delightfully easy to fob off )

carving knives at dawn soapbox. I don't think she can chop a 4lb fillet into 10 in an elegant fashion if it is wellingtoned up...

PrincessPeaHead · 21/01/2006 23:48

you need 2 and a half shoulders of lamb for 10!!!!! Do you have industrial sized ovens?

you aren't good at cooking for a crowd, are you dear.....

let me think.

Heathcliffscathy · 21/01/2006 23:48

oops. laughed outloud and he's next to me watching rugby...must be careful.

I'd get a caterer in. I think the surprise element here is going to be v tricky what with all these giant animal corpses around and crowds of people arriving

soapbox · 21/01/2006 23:51

LOL - yes I do have industrial sized ovens

If a 3lb fillet cuts fine for 8, then 4lb is surely okay for 10!!!

Can't see why not!

Hadn't thought through the oven issue though- possibly won't fit in a standard sized oven!

Aloha · 21/01/2006 23:51

Or book a table at the nearest gastropub?

PrincessPeaHead · 21/01/2006 23:51

well actually how about lamb fillets? I do them a lot and they are delicious if you do them nice and pink. Allow one each. You marinade them for ages in something interesting (mint infused oil, or red chillis or something, there are lots of recipes around), then roast for about 25 mins. Couldn't be simpler. Serve on top of something nice (eg aforesaid dauphinoise) but slice each one on the diagonal before serving so they look fantastic and a bit less like a severed penis on a plate

Heathcliffscathy · 21/01/2006 23:52

must stop sniggering. he is going to look over shoulder any minute.

can't do caterers (against my religion plus bit too skint to stretch to that atm)

what do you reckon aloha: gis another baby or else you get gruel on your bday?

But she wants to cook it because it is her husbands favourite dish!

PrincessPeaHead · 21/01/2006 23:53

I'm not saying a 4lb fillet wouldn't work, I'm just guessing that wrapping that monster in soggy mushrooms and pastry, finding a baking sheet large enough, stuffing it in her mini oven (I assume no agas sophable), getting the timing right and THEN carving it beautifully into 10 pieces is a little beyond her. especially as she will be pissed for at least half of those manoevres...

PrincessPeaHead · 21/01/2006 23:54

then she can get a little one, cook it the night before, and serve it to him naked.

he won't complain

Aloha · 21/01/2006 23:54

Enough champagne and you might get a baby anyway! (but not too much, you understand )

Heathcliffscathy · 21/01/2006 23:55

looks into middle distance wistfully....left aga behind when left dorset. much missed. there is talk of getting one in here, but is pie in the sky atm...

soapbox · 21/01/2006 23:56

Could you do that Sophable?

A little private party for him at lunch time with naked Wellington - you could tease him by parading in Wellies first of all - then serve up a tiddly one!

It would head him off thinking that anything was happening at dinner time?

Then do something else fabby for dinner instead?

Heathcliffscathy · 21/01/2006 23:56

accidents aren't possible...and i'm doing it again...talking about deadly serious terrible thing on inappropriate thread due to fact that can't bear to start thread about it....so back to the matter in hand....not sure about severed penises even if they are cut on the diagonal....

big rib of beef. that would do ten surely?

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 21/01/2006 23:56

lamb fillets. dauphinoise. veg of choice. salad. huge delicious cheese or two with artfully piled dates to make you look like divine domestic goddess. pudding to die for (most important bit - get that right and they forget what they ate before) - I suggest slater's white choc and cardamom mousse. strong coffee. fantastic wine. drunken shag. baby.

sorted

Heathcliffscathy · 21/01/2006 23:57

cd is doing pavlova. and frankly it can't be beaten but i'll try with choc bday cake.

Aloha · 21/01/2006 23:57

Nooo! If he has beef wellington for lunch plus assorted livestock for dinner, he will be in no mood for baby-providing by bedtime. And poor sophable will be all stressed and sweaty and covered in beef fat.

soapbox · 21/01/2006 23:58

Big rib of beef would be divine - with PPH's dauphinoise and some nice veggies!

soapbox · 21/01/2006 23:58

Aloha - there's a fair bit of time between lunch and dinner

PrincessPeaHead · 21/01/2006 23:59

but you have all the faff of carving a rib, and someone will demand yorkshire pudding and then you will have to threaten to kill them.

honestly, lamb is your way forward.

or fish, but that is moving away from the carnivore that is your husband. I know a nice cod dish (no, really!) - cod covered in a rockety pesto and wrapped in filo pastry. Do it all in advance, whack it in the oven for 30 mins or so at the last minute. but it doesn't remotely resemble beef wellington. apart from the pastry I suppose

Aloha · 21/01/2006 23:59

Not if you've got half a cow and a party of ten to sort out!

Aloha · 22/01/2006 00:00

I can just see it...darling sophable, why is there a dead cow in the kitchen..?

soapbox · 22/01/2006 00:01

I'd do the fillet of beef in pancetta then - it was a piece of piss to do!

She's not doing any preparation for the party on the day itself as it is a big surprise. Which kindof rules out a great big rib of beef I suppose, which needs 3 hours cooking!

Yorkies have no place at dinner I'm afraid - they are lunch fare only!
