The one that you reach for over-and-over again? Either for everyday things or special occasion (or one that covers both) or for baking / desserts.

Always looking to add to my collection Grin.

Warlock - Is the BBC Good Food series you mentioned a set of books? Everything I have ever made from the magazines has been a great success so the books would be of great interest to me too. I've not seen them here in Canada but will check Amazon UK.

Broccoli Forest was one of my first cookbooks. Still use it quite a bit.

YY to Rachel Allen. Very family friendly. I'd like to add some older classics to my collection so would love to get my hands on a Mrs. Beaton, Delia, and some of the others you've all suggested.

Thanks for all the great suggestions thus far!

Pop yes they are in a series of about 20 or so. One dish per double page but they are under A5 size. I swear by them for all occasions and have never had a bad meal from them. Good luck in your search Wine

Ooh-I love the bbc good food books too. Cakes and bakes is now in a terrible state-the sign of a well loved cookbook!

Sophie Dahl - Loved her cookery series last year, and use this book all the time. Quick, easy and delicious, plus as many recipes are veggie (not all I hasten to add) it suits us very well.

Sainsbury's magazine - 80 pc of my new tries come from recipes in there ( I tried 2 for lunch today )
Just Like Mother Used to Make - Tom Norrington-Davies - great for the classics
Leith's Baking Bible - for cakes etc
Kitchen Diaries - Nige
I have a few from Tana's Family Food that I do regularly

My favourite books, however, are the Sarah Raven ones. The Garden cookbook I use loads in Spring/Summer and the cooking for Family & Friends one in the autumn/winter.

Popbiscuit · 23/01/2012 17:06

Hepsibaaah - I was looking at the Sophie Dahl one at the bookstore the other day; might go back for that one. Really beautiful book and I liked that there were lots of veggie things in it.

Taffeta - Sarah Raven is the gardener, yes? (not in the UK). That sounds interesting...will have a look out for those.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

DP got the Silver spoon from me, looks amazing but haven't braved it yet. Perhaps we should have a Silver Spoon testing thread?

Readers Digest The Cookery Year c1978 - really comprehensive, has not dated, has EVERYTHING in it (even a wedding breakfast planner, or indeed welsh rarebit, or cakes and biscuits, basic info on meat and fish cuts, etc) the main part of the book is seasonally based, so way ahead of its time. Has breakfasts, meals, puddings and snacks for each month. Great charity shop find as its a book we had at home, my mum still uses hers too.

LittleWhiteWolf · 23/01/2012 18:06

My favourite cookbook is Lottes Country Kitchen, mostly because I know the author and eat her food quite regularly at her cafe. Plus I have a real soft spot for traditional English cooking, edible flowers and pies.

Tbh the cookbook I use the most is my cookie recipe book. I'm a good cook and I don't often refer to cookbooks any more if making something new, but I'm not a great baker and need all the help I can get!

urban that's not a bad idea about SS. I still can't quite bring myself to try anything from it, it's so imposing, just sat there looking at me!!!!!

Silver Spoon thread

I have a ton of cookery booksBlush But this is what I use more than anything. I love this site.

People comment on the recipes they try which is really helpful and it's easy to find what sort of recipe I might want.

And this is a beautiful book, but I read it in bed not in the kitchen
