The one that you reach for over-and-over again? Either for everyday things or special occasion (or one that covers both) or for baking / desserts.

Always looking to add to my collection Grin.

Nigella Express/Domestic Goddess
Leith's Simple Cookery
Fay's Family Food (Fay Ripley)
Delia's Happy Christmas
and occasionally a bit of Jamie. :)

QueenKong · 18/01/2012 19:39

Not that i'm trying to tempt you popbiscuit but the Mile High Brownies are just out of this world. Part flapjack, part brownie, part fudge. Om-nom-nom...

Molehillmountain · 18/01/2012 19:40

The ones I use all the time-good housekeeping and dairy book of home cookery. These days for new recipes I love bbc good food mag. I love nigella bites and her weightier books for a good read but don't go to them for basics.

RoxyRobin · 18/01/2012 19:40

Delia's Complete Cookery Course. I know it's not exciting but she's so reliable.

Molehillmountain · 18/01/2012 19:42

Ooh and james martins "sweet" has my carrot cake and brownie recipes so although I could happily just rip out those pages and live without the rest I can't not mention that one.

40notTrendy · 18/01/2012 19:45

Another fan of Appetite by Nigel Slater. And nowt wrong with Delia. I've got my nana's set of the three individual cookery course books and a couple of the How to Cook books. Ken Hom's Hot Wok is also well used in our house, even though the name made us giggle when we first got it! Leith's Cookery Bible is fantastic. It tells you how to cook almost anything.

River Cottage Everyday is my desert island cook book. I have cooked loads from it. I haven't had Veg Everyday long but it is great too.

For posh I like Nigella's Feast.

River Cottage Everyday - used to love Nigel Slater, but spent more time reading them than using them. RCE I actually use, lots. It would do for everything except lots of baking, I think but I don't do much of that.

RoxyRobin · 19/01/2012 13:45

The Be-Ro book! That takes me back. My mum used to have one when I was little and used it all the time, with brilliant results. Didn't know it was still going. But people seem to use frozen pastry these days instead of making their own, so half of the recipes I remember would be redundant.

Angelmist · 19/01/2012 15:15

I don't buy cook books at the moment, I go to these sites for inspiration and recipes and the good thing is some of the websites have easy to follow demonstrations.

My Favorite is Cooking With Dog : A Japanese woman with her pet poodle demonstrate Japanese cookery and how to fill a BEnto box with yummy healthy food

I have over a hundred cook books yet I still end up looking on BBC good food

I'm a big fan of the mum knows best books, I like nigella to 'read' though!

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 19/01/2012 20:03

You are all too up-to-date for me! I tend to use the Good Housekeeping I was given as a present on my 13th birthday, a Mrs Beeton that belonged to my great aunt and still use a few recipes from various kids cookery books bought when they were toddlers. The Mrs Beeton is a treasure and has long sections on the correct management of servants and is hilarious, it also has a chapter on curries and a chapter on vegetarian food.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/01/2012 21:22

My favourite is Madhur Jafery's (sp?), 'World Vegetarian.' I also love to look at the World Food Cafe books - gorgeous pictures and lots of nice curry recipes! Love 'Feast' for looking at but haven't made loads from it - as a veggie, Nigella isn't much use to me tbh.

ObviouslyOblivious · 19/01/2012 21:27

Tamasin Day Lewis Kitchen Bible is just fabulous. I use it all the time all the time.

Popbiscuit · 19/01/2012 23:35

Remus - Have heard v. good things about Madhur Jaffery. World Vegetarian is on my wish list. River Cottage books are also on my radar but haven't ever seen a copy here. I get lots of ideas from healthy food blogs too, Angelmist. My favourites are Kath Eats Real Food and 101 cookbooks.

Thanks for all these great suggestions! I'm looking them all up on Amazon and checking out the websites.

my 2 go-to cookbooks are Jamie Oliver's 30 minute meals (the brownies, oh the brownies!!), which I cook a recipe from once a week or so - I have 4 of them perfected to cook without the desserts and without the cookbook now :o and the Good Housekeeping Cookbook, which I've had for years, and still refer to frequently.

I also love my Southern Living cookbook, but don't use it all that often, as the recipes seem to be for feeding families of 30, not of 3...

The Martha Stewart cupcake book is quite nice too, although mainly for gawping at the photos :o

nursenic · 20/01/2012 11:11

'Juniors cookbook' from the NYC restaurant/diner
'James Villas Southern Cooking'
Moro and Moro East
Nigel Slater - Kitchen Diaries
Short and sweet- Dan Lepard
The Fish Store
The Pastry Queen-Rebecca Rather
Pastry Queen Christmas and party food (I think Nigella's Xmas book was 'inspired' by this)
Simon Hopkinson-all of his books
Made In Italy/ Made In Sicily-Giorgio Locatelli
Peasant Food-Elizabeth Luard
Ripailles

nursenic · 20/01/2012 11:11

Oh and Claudia Roden, Ken Hom, Madhur Jaffrey....

nursenic · 20/01/2012 11:13

Jamie Olivers Lime Mascarpone Carrot Cake is what Angel's eat.

nursenic · 20/01/2012 11:15
