NYE party food - very simple nibbles (not whole dishes)

We've got up to 20 people coming round tomorrow. No prep so far and v little time tomorrow, they're not expecting much in the way of food but want to give them a few v simple nibbles. So far I'm planning to do crisps, nice sausages cut into slices (that people can skewer with cocktail sticks), a cheese platter, some vegetarian pizzas cut into small slices, carrots/peppers/cucumber with hummus. Doesn't seem very much for a whole night - any other suggestions that require min preparation?

(I know there's another NYE food thread on here but it seems to be mostly main courses).

Thanks v much

Philadeplhia, chopped coriander and sweet chilli sauce mixed together.

fivegomadindorset · 30/12/2011 15:30

If you are doing cheese, nice bread, salami etc and olives?

DilysPrice · 30/12/2011 15:31

Nigellas party popcorn.

MerylStrop · 30/12/2011 15:34

grilled halloumi slices, with chopped chilli coriander and olive oil

nigellas union square cafe nuts - shove in a bowl: dollop muscovado sugar, bit of chopped rosemary, sprinkle of seasalt, bit of cayenne pepper or mixed spice; lightly toast some mixed nuts in a roasting dish. Mix. Divine

Spread Philadelphia on wraps, put smoked salmon and a squeeze of lemon on top, roll up and cut into slices- practically effortless and really pretty.

ohbugrit · 30/12/2011 15:34

Mini oatcakes, cream cheese and a sliver of smoked salmon on top. Or spread with Boursin. Bowls of nuts and crisps. Crudites and dips/salsa/sour cream.

Obviously you're doing one of these, right? Grin

one of my faves is smoked salmon on buttered brown bread cut into triangles, crusts cut off season with black pepper and serve with wedges of lemon - looks classy and tastes great with fizz :-)

Raffiiscool · 30/12/2011 15:39

Mini bite sized baked potatoes

Buy a couple bags of mini new potatoes. Wash and put in roasting tray. Roast till baked. Take out to cool. slice and add chunk of cheddar. When needed Put back in oven for 5 mins to warm and melt cheese a bit. Sprinkle some sea salt over the top.

These always go down well-are tasty,filling &cheap!

Also can't beat blinis with horseradish Creme fresh (ratio 4cf to1 hr) topped with smoked salmon. Can be expensive though as blinis a rip off ( though you can make your own easily if you have buckwheat flour)

Raffiiscool · 30/12/2011 15:47

Re sausages : great recipe is to cook cocktail or chipolatas cut in hallf. Mix 3 tbspn honey and 3 tbsp granary mustard in bowl. Toss sausage in this then put back in oven in serving dish to warm through. Delicious!

Did all this the other night -everything eaten.

Think about having cheese plate to bring out later for the stragglers!

fiddlerintheloft · 30/12/2011 15:47

Get breadsticks (not the fat smooth ones - the thinner "misshapen" type - cant remember what they are called!)

Break in two if very long - then wrap narrow slices of parma or serrano ham around one half. Serve with shaved parmesan and some balsamic for dipping.

Had them in Carluccios and served them at Christmas - disappeared quick as a flash!

Laquitar · 30/12/2011 16:25

I'm doing similar to yours and i will also have few bowls of different types of olives and some nice bread.

I'm thinking to put 2 big plates with small felafels to make it a bit more filling.

Laquitar · 30/12/2011 16:27

Oh Raffiscool sausages sound good!

muttimalzwei · 30/12/2011 16:29

assorted crackers (discount cracker boxes in shops now) and about £25 worth of interesting cheese surrounded by cherry tomatoes/cucumber sticks.
or feta cheese, cherry tomato and olive on stick.
meat board - ham, salami, turkey etc with white baguette bread.
TWIGLETS!
Kettle crisps seem to be £1 most places for huge bags (sainsbury's today anyway) Woudl get bags and bags of the plain, chilli and salt and vinegar.
Celery sticks in glass of water (class)

OhdearNigel · 30/12/2011 16:29

cocktail sausages with wholegrain mustard and honey - mix honey, mustard and some oil, mix with sausages and cook at 180. Dead easy and very delicious.

Waitrose do frozen grilled med veg - get a pack of puff pastry to make mini pasties in a trice.

muttimalzwei · 30/12/2011 16:32

and I would make a simple pudding like a gorgeous (Bailey's) cheescake or a pavlova type thing to mop up the champagne and also put out all the chocs you want rid of!

Browse the Jus Rol site for ideas - their puff pastry can be the basis for loads of tartlet-type things e.g. here www.jusrol.co.uk/recipe.aspx?RecipeId=93

marmite and cheese whirls are lovely too, packet puff pastry, roll out, thin layer marmite, grated strong cheese, roll up into a long sausage and slice, lay down to bake for around 15 mins or so

fiddlerintheloft · 30/12/2011 17:01

These are brilliant. thanks so much. Excellent idea about using up excess christmas chocolates as well!

like avadventK's idea but look posher: palmiers.
Buy jusrol already rolled puff pastry.lay out the big rectangle and spread with either red pesto, green pesto, or tapenade. roll one long half into the middle, then the other half. fridge for half an hour. then chop up your log into tiny little pieces and cook in a hot oven for about 20 mins. absolutely delicious and look amazing.
also: smash up an avocado, tiny bits of tomato and some red onion or similar, ie you are making a guacamole type dip, but instead of serving as a dip, spread on doritos or similar and serve. look really pretty and less messy than a dip. goes further too.
