merrySOAPBOXingday · 20/12/2005 09:55

Fish curry
Platueau de fruits de mer
Grilled tuna with fresh salsa and wild rice
Pasta with smoked salmon and mascepone sauce
Salmon parcels cooked in foil with white wine and butter and veggies

IOTAnnenbaum · 20/12/2005 09:55

piedmont peppers!

bossykate · 20/12/2005 09:58

if you go for furball's suggestion, your main course will be quite light so i think you could start with a hearty winter soup - what about cauliflower/celeriac and stilton.

if you go for fish pie you will need something lighter though - warm pear and walnut salad with roquefort dressing? i've made a version of this and it's a delicious combination.

thecattleareALOHing · 20/12/2005 10:02

I like a nice big bit of smoked salmon - the kind you roast, not the slices you have on brown bread. With a warm potato salad (either in mayonnaise or olive oil and red wine vinegar) and green beans. Oh, I've just seen Enid's suggestion! That sort of thing!
Big pavlova to finish - ie not to heavy given that you are starting all over again tomorrow.

thecattleareALOHing · 20/12/2005 10:03

For starters I'd just buy a box of canapes from the supermarket, heat in oven and serve with champagne. Feels really festive, minimum work and you can have these while standing/sitting around chatting. And I like canapes better than any other food tbh.

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 20/12/2005 10:07

I like the idea of some sort of salmon with new potatoes and green beans etc, quite light and if baked minimal hassle on night.

Starter- yeah, maybe a celeriac soup (or i do a nice spiced parsnip one)

How about puds?
Sorry, i have NO imagination today!

Snap - I got landed with a christmas eve dinner party too, but the guests are bringing a turkey, ready cooked. It goes without saying that one of the turkey-bringers is a vegetarian (see recent thread about PITA veggies).

Fish pie is a lot of work if you do it properly but is utterly delicious and I have been craving it for weeks. However I'd be tempted to get a whole fish and poach it. THere was a gorgeous recipe on Rick Stein last night, let me see if I can find it. It looked like almost no work.

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 20/12/2005 10:08

I like canapes too, but m and s had to be ordered i think and don't think much of the sainsbury's ones (had a look yesterday)

PruniStuffing · 20/12/2005 10:09

Roasted not poached. He used a whole fish and it looked utterly fab. I suppose it doesn't have to be salmon, either, any fish that'll serve 6 to 8 will do.

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 20/12/2005 10:09

It'sbloody late notice too i might add!

OP posts:
bossykate · 20/12/2005 10:10

pavlova or eton mess?

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 20/12/2005 10:11

Now that looks perfect Pruni.

Will have a nose around that site too for starter ideas.

OP posts:
ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 20/12/2005 10:13

ooh eton mess is an easy one yes
but maybe a bit summery?

OP posts:
PruniStuffing · 20/12/2005 10:15

Glad to be of assistance. I will be watching this thread - I need veggie accompaniments/startery things possibly so do post a link if you find anything that looks good.

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 20/12/2005 10:16

Do you think i could do the salsa verde without capers? Dp informed me last week he doesn't like 'em.

OP posts:
bossykate · 20/12/2005 10:16

summery, tis true, but then so is salmon, new pots and green beans....

thecattleareALOHing · 20/12/2005 10:18

Oi! I said Pavlova too - lovely. Maybe with clementines or pineapple to be more christmassy?

I had the chinesy party things from Sainsbury's last night and they were quite nice. Ds wanted to try them and I thought, why not.

Otherwise toasted brioche slices with mushrooms in cream spooned on top. I love that.

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 20/12/2005 10:19

mm, all sound nice

How about shallot tarte tatin for starter?

OP posts:
thecattleareALOHing · 20/12/2005 10:20

Lovely. depends how much work you want to do I suppose.
