i actually think i might do a bread and butter pudding type thing for pud though so maybe not the brioche idea.

I would do baked salmon, green beans and dauphinoise(sp?) potatoes or if you want something lighter I would do them baked in the oven with stock and herbs - Again not too much preperation which is handy for Christmas Eve.... I think canapes for starters is a good idea too...!

Well, yes which is why I'd do...

Bought canapes (dh can do and open champagne)
Arrange happy guests on sofas

Remove salmon from oven
Drain beans, mix potatoes with hollandaise/mayonnaise/oil & vinegar
Serve with crusty bread to mop up

Bring out pavlova you made earlier and kept in fridge

Pudding wine and cantucci biscuits.

Easy and festive.
(btw I wouldn't personally do a stodgy pudding the night before christmas, the ultimate stodge-fest)
