Following on from a thread the other day about what is good at Aldi, can I ask what you rate at Lidl?

OP posts:

Nappies

Collision · 26/09/2011 21:55

Tins tomatoes and beans and kidney beans

Frozen pizza

Milk

Custard

Fizzy drinks

Biscuits

All vegetables and fruit

glitterkitty · 26/09/2011 21:57

Jars of mushrooms in oil.

2tired2bewitty · 26/09/2011 21:59

Ready made lasagna (sp?)

Bratwurst

Their cereals are quite good to, though they didn't have my preferred Red Flakes (or something like that) when I went this week

nodrog · 26/09/2011 22:01

Everything but coffee and brown sauce. I do my shopping at Lidl or Aldi depending on where I need to go to before hand and go to a major supermarket for 'bits' once or twice a month for extras. (normally spend about £20 a month on extras!)

OhBuggerandArse · 26/09/2011 22:08

Jam. Mmm.

AliBean · 26/09/2011 22:08

Why not coffee, nodrog? Have you tried it?
Collision what custard? Powder or chilled stuff?
I buy a fair bit there then top up in "proper" supermarkets! I would rather buy more there and less in the more expensive supermarkets!

def another recommendation for the jar mushrooms.

the black forest ham is fabulous for carbonara, salty and smokey!

their pastrami is lovely too.

Potted herbs, bigger pots and much sturdier plants.

Veg is usually good, have been buying their "live" cut and grow salads recently.

NonnoMum · 26/09/2011 22:14

Croissants. Sliced bread. Juices for packed lunches. Ham/salami/bacon.

Prosecco. Smile

startail · 26/09/2011 22:16

Ace juice (orange and carrot, much loved by the girls) and we had some really nice corneto type ice creams, continental of some sort and half the price of Tesco.

startail · 26/09/2011 22:17

Oh and I'm using some very cheap W2 or some such dish washer tablets that seem to work.

nodrog · 26/09/2011 22:17

I have tried their 'own brand' brown sauce, it was not nice, (I think Lidl sell HP tho)and we really tried. As for coffee, I don't drink it dp does, (Lidl do sell Nestle btw) and he is a coffee-aholic and only likes one brand.

ApplesinmyPocket · 26/09/2011 22:19

I go about once a month and regularly buy:

Parmesan
Kettle-like crisps (just as good and much cheaper)
dark chocolate for cooking
little jars of peppercorns, black or mixed, that have a grinder as a top
Lidl's own-brand dark-choc digestives, also choc sandwich biscuits
sweetcorn
tins of chopped tomatoes
freezer bags (big strong ones, very good value)

Their seasonal offers which vary from week to week are always worth a look: I bought my favourite ever pair of trainers from Lidl (suede, lightweight, lasted forever and were the comfiest things ever to walk in) for £5.

In the summer I bought 3 fruit trees for £6 each, two survived and are now healthy young apple trees, the pear unfortunately died, but it was still a good buy.

Ungratefulchild · 26/09/2011 22:19

Hygenic wipes
Olive oil
Parmesan
Feta
Fruit and veg
Frozen veg

NOT coffee or wine

Used to buy their nappies

PacificDogwood · 26/09/2011 22:20

Their breadmixes are fab - particularly if you have a breadmachine and like German-style wholegrain/rye breads

wigglesrock · 26/09/2011 22:20

Their jam and marmalade is second to none. My friend always swore by their nappies as well, fruit juice and sweeties, cold meats, cheese.

nodrog · 26/09/2011 22:23

washing powder, fabric conditioner and dishwasher tablets from both are good. (I used to only buy fairy dishwasher tablets as I always thought finish was shite!!) I have saved enough this year with the switch in supermarkets to have a new bathroom suite and to have it fitted (£2000) and I have always been a tight arse when it comes to food shopping, mainly because dp works nights and enjoys cooking from scratch (or is that his excuse not to take the dogs out for their afternoon walk)

Tobagostreet · 26/09/2011 22:26

Fizzy drinks

Apple juice

Quiche

Fruit and Veg

Whatever branded good on offer (weetabix, nutella, etc)

Cien handwash with milk and honey (only 55p for 500ml and smells devine)

rosyvalentine · 26/09/2011 22:30

Loads of high quality, low cost stuff:

Ham & Salami (Germans love their ham and salami so these are excellent)
Fruit & veg
Muesli (fab and literally a third of the price of mainstream brands)
Fresh croissants
Tinned tomatoes & kidney beans (cheapest ever)
Organic spaghetti
Apple and orange juices not from concentrate
Parmesan
Bleach
Liquid Laundry detergent
Pre wash stain remover spray
Loo roll
Kitchen roll
Plain chocolate

I normally end up with a bill less than half of what it would be in another supermarket! :) Except when I'm tempted by their weekly offers - I bought a waffle maker last week Blush

AliBean · 26/09/2011 22:30

Does anyone manage to do a full shop? No mention of meat yet? I bought a free range chook the other day and it was great. Mince beef also nice. British, lean, cheaper than morrisons.

OP posts:
Dumpyandabdabs · 26/09/2011 22:30

Everything!!!!!

But the nappies, belly pork slices and whole chirizo sausages are particularly fine.

rosyvalentine · 26/09/2011 22:33

Their Italian ice cream and mini ice cream cones are great too. And their Italian extra virgin olive oil is cheap as chips compared to some brands.

Ungratefulchild · 26/09/2011 22:35

Forgot the potato salad :)

nodrog · 26/09/2011 22:35

yep everything (meat too)
BUT, Dp does work nights and cooks from scratch. (including puddings)

mrspnut · 26/09/2011 22:38

I buy chicken breasts, bratwurst, cooked meats, parmesan, olive oil, cartons of orange juice and prosecco.

I am often seduced by a bargain in there as well and sometimes buy passatta and chopped tomatoes from there instead of sainsbury's.
