Following on from a thread the other day about what is good at Aldi, can I ask what you rate at Lidl?

nodrog · 26/09/2011 22:40

btw last months extras were 2 jars of coffee and a bag of frozen parsnips!! = £15

Ponders · 26/09/2011 22:40

Of the 2 I prefer Aldi to Lidl, but

Lidl's peanut butter, vine cherry toms & chilled curries are extremely good

also chocolate puddings, plain paper napkins, fake orangina (49p & excellent)

fruit/veg/tinned toms etc are pretty interchangeable between the 2

nodrog · 26/09/2011 22:42

I prefer Aldi too Ponders. Dp prefers Lidl, but I think thats because Lidl sells some well known brands too.

AliBean · 26/09/2011 22:47

My nearest Aldi is over an hour away. Lidl a mere 30 mins (deepest Cornwall) so although like Aldi lots (Toro Loco! Yummmmm) Lidl more practical for regular shops. More ideas please :-)

The 'gold blend' coffee is great, it's all I drink now. Yoghurt in big tubs, dark chocolate and pear cider.

AliBean · 26/09/2011 23:32

Oooops posted twice. Silly phone.

Jam is really lovely--the one in the square shaped jars.
Cold meats
Little vacuum packed sausages (bratwurst?) are very handy for quick grub.
Big tubs of greek yoghurt are great

LillianGish · 27/09/2011 20:11

Parma ham, feta cheese, fruit and veg. Have a lot of French friends who buy their wine there - not the cheap stuff, but they often get in really good stuff - Chablis premiere cru, Pouilly Fume at bargain prices (ie not cheap, but much cheaper than anywhere else).

BertieBotts · 28/09/2011 13:37

Cooking foil - massively cheap for a long roll of the extra strong stuff. Did a comparison recently on mysupermarket with Lidl receipt and this was the best deal by a long shot.

dustwhatdust · 01/11/2011 13:17

Here's mine -
Agree about their ham and salami - they are great and fabulous quality. I love their baby spinach, rocket and lambs lettuce , it's so much cheaper than waitrose !
As i'm contantly on the dukan diet, their 0% plain yoghurt ( at 55p cheapest alternative is asda - 90p)
Rasberry jam in the odd shaped jars (as piebald says )is absolutley delicious and amazing value and better than tiptrees !
cherry tomatoes , garlic , melon , free range eggs are 85p for 1/2 doz
Lidl's own brand twixes and snickers are jsut as good as the real thing and my sons is very fussy ! Also my husband who is fantatical, says their 70% dark chocolate in nearly as good as lindt and i always buy lidl chocolate for rocky road or brownies in my recipes .

The brand stuff is often much cheaper than the other supermarkets too.
Its worth trying somthing new everytime . we hated the Lidl pesto but that was about 5 years ago , i'll bet it's improved now so I shall try again soon maybe .

SexyDomesticatedDab · 01/11/2011 15:21

Just about all their own brand stuff is good - chocolate bars, biscuits, jams, olive oil, pasta, cat food, cereals, charcuterie (sp?) stuff, bread mixes, juices, puddings (especially vanilla types). Have about 5 large supermarkets all within a small distance of each other so tend to rotate the shopping as have favourites in each. Like Lidl as you don't have annoying background music and too many announcements of whats on offer. Plus the weekly extra stuff - you never know whats going to turn up!

notcitrus · 01/11/2011 16:03

Their refrigerated lasagne is as good as Sainbo's Taste the Difference at 1/3 the price.
Fruit and veg tend to be seasonal and cheap
Biscuits, chocolate, sausage, smoked fish, cheese all excellent
Not-from-concentrate long life fruit juice - have to look hard for it but it's there among all the sugary 'nectars'
Dishwasher tabs are as good as Finish. Laundry liquid is fine but smells funny.
Frozen foods are usually good especially the party stuff.
UK meat is cheap though they only sometimes have free-range.

What I don't buy: yoghurts as they only seem to have really sugary ones
And the 'Campo Largo' own-brand spaghetti hoops are some of the most foul things I've tasted in a long time. Even ds was unimpressed.
Also some of the tinned soups look horrible, and there's often not much choice of wholemeal bread.

If I just want 'food' then I can stock up for a week at Lidl but if there's something specific I want like peanut butter without sugar, or evaporated milk, or certain cereal or fruit/veg, then I go to Sainsburys.

mumzy · 01/11/2011 22:32

Hotcross buns best I've had and cheap

Lovesbaking · 02/11/2011 12:22

There pull up nappies are great. Also addicted (and so is my DS) to a brand of chocolate spread they stock, it comes in a very large jar and has the word XXL in bright red, it actually has more hazelnut then Nutella (only a little bit more mind) and is not as sweet.
Their casserole meat and all the fruit and veg is great.
Baby wipes are excellent and thick
Cleaning products (love their spectacle cleaning wipes in little individual sachets - great for cleaning the iPad screen)
LOVE!!!! their Xmas ginger bread covered in milk chocolate. And my DH loves the panetone, a fraction of the price at other supermarket abd delicious.

Lovesbaking · 02/11/2011 12:23

Also forgot to say re coffee I recently bought a large pot of Monte Santos coffee and it's really nice. I'm very fussy about my coffee and this is strong and full of flavour.

maudpringle · 02/11/2011 18:00

I buy all of my laundry and cleaning products; washing liquid/powder, cream cleaner, dishwasher tabs, fabric softner and wipes.
I love their big pots of yoghurt,
Their look-a -likey mars and twix are great value for a treat,
The muesli is the best I can find,
The shower gels are lovely, especially the mango,
The ready made lasagne is delicious,
Dog treats/cat mix are good too,
I am a recent convert to Lidl and I am most impressed, I can do a good weeks shopping for about £50.

gailforce1 · 02/11/2011 20:21

Do Not try their Blackberry Liquor - the worst cough mixture would not be as bad as this was. However, I took it back today and complained and got my money back! So willing to try anything from Lidl if they are prepared to refund if you do not like it!

LaFilleSurLePont · 02/11/2011 21:28

Potato salad.
The huge tubs of vanilla yoghurt.
Black Forest ham.
Cloudy apple juice.
