Do your children like soup?

If so which ones?

It's one of the few things that DD (2.4) won't try which is a shame because it would be such a useful lunch during the colder months.

Any winning recipes?

I have a 10 year old whose favourite foods ( apart from chocolate, chips and McDonalds) are brussels sprouts and bacon fat.

FootballFriendSays · 15/09/2011 16:12

Mine like tomato soup, the full range, from Heinz to cheap shop's own brand. They have it with 'soldiers' the way others would have eggs.

They also like Chinese soup (I don't know exactly what as it's only one type in one restaurant).

:o at Seeker - I was mightily confused on a thread recently about taking soup at school in a flask.

IceCreamCastles · 15/09/2011 16:17

Yes have tried thick with no bits and thin with. All rejected. Hey ho.

I have the world's fussiest eater - she is 5 and has the appetite of a sparrow. The only food she never refuses is a homemade vegetable one I make. It has onion, leek, butternut squash and carrots and parsnips in with a stock cube and I blend it smooth. Sometimes I add a little bit of chicken or some red lentils. For some reason she thinks it is called minestrone - something to do with Minnie Mouse I think.

She used to eat leek and potato too but wasn't that keen on it last winter and I haven't tried since.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 15/09/2011 16:32

Yep dd loves soup, my sunshine soup in particular (think chicken laksa type with plenty of noodles) but she's not overly fussy.
Mindees like soup especially with a bacon sandwich to dip in it.

bruffin · 15/09/2011 16:52

The chinese soup is easy to make
chicken stock
tin of creamed sweetcorn and then bits of chicken or bacon floating on the top.

FootballFriendSays · 15/09/2011 16:55

Bruffin - is chicken stock chicken cubes? Also creamed sweetcorn, what's that? I understand the chicken and bacon. Thanks, i'd like to try and do it because they like it there.

wheredidiputit · 15/09/2011 17:23

DD1 will only eat the stock from a home made chicken soup/stew. DD2 and DS will eat any soup, if they decide it's a soup day.

ExpensivePants · 15/09/2011 17:27

DD will eat NCG chicken soup with crusty bread but thats only because I used to take it round to my mother's every day when I was off on mat leave so she was weaned on it! Blush

IceCreamCastles · 15/09/2011 18:41

Isn't there egg in the Chinese chicken and sweetcorn soup?

Thinking back to weaning I'm sure dd used to eat bread dipped in soup but it must have tailed off at some point. I wonder if those weaned on puree prefer soup to those who did finger food?

Forgot the egg
You whisk egg up and pour it so it cooks as it hits the hot soup

bruffin · 15/09/2011 19:04

You can use any chicken stock
And you can buy creamed sweetcorn in tins from most supermarkets.

exoticfruits · 15/09/2011 19:24

Soup was my way of getting vegetables down them. Everything went in-I just made sure that sprouts were only a few. I put a lot of carrots in and called it carrot soup or a lot of tomatoes and called it tomato (I never mentioned the rest). Basically stock and veg liquidised.

AngelDog · 16/09/2011 20:44

No. I sometimes wonder if that's a consequence of doing BLW but I doubt it really is.

WorzselMummage · 16/09/2011 20:46

Mine love it, expecially tesco smoked bacon and lentil fresh one. DD(7) alway asked for seconds and thirds.

I dont make soup myself.. should do really.

SazZaVoom · 16/09/2011 20:49

Eeeek, sorry Blush

SazZaVoom I would love your recipe Grin

SazZaVoom · 16/09/2011 21:14

LOL Worzsel Grin. Here you go....

Lentil, Bacon & Tomato Soup

1 tbsp oil
1 small onion
400g tin toms
100g red lentils
Beef oxo + 900ml water
100g lean smoked bacon
S&P

Chop onion & saute in oil, add bacon & fry for 2 mins
Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 25-30 mins
Whizz with hand blender until smooth
Season to taste

SazZaVoom · 16/09/2011 21:16

Oh, and this one is lovely, but more adult than child i would say

Thai lemongrass, chicken & mushroom broth - serves 2

1 lemongrass stalk
Chicken oxo & 600ml water
200g skinless chicken breasts, cut in strips
1-2 tsp thai red curry paste
1 shallot/small onion, finely diced
100g shitake mushrooms sliced
2 tsp muscovado/soft brown sugar
1 tsp nam pla/fish sauce
Juice of 1 lemon
S&P
To serve: 1 salad onion finely slices, 1 red chilli finely slices, fresh coriander

Flatten the lemongrass stalk with rolling pin & place in pan with stock, chicken, curry paste & shallot & bring to boil
Add mushrooms & simmer for 8-10 mins
Stir in sugar & fish sauce & simmer for 3 mins until chicken cooked.
Squeeze in the lemon juice & season to taste

Serve with onion, chilli & coriander on top

For more of a 'meal' I add one bundle of thai rice noodles/ramen noodles at the end, turn off the heat and let them cook for 5 mins.

stressedHEmum · 17/09/2011 15:15

Yes, they do. Some favourites

DS1 - hot and sour soup

3l chickne/veg stock
2tspn tabasco
6-8 cloves finely chopped garlic
2 inch piece ginger, grated
4tblspns soy sauce
good splash fish sauce
2tblspns vinegar
2tblspns vinegar
2tblspns sugar (brown is best)

Bring it all to the boil and simmer for a fwe minutes. Then add some cooked chicken, some prawns or tofu if you like and simmer again, you can add some chopped red pepper, sliced spring onions, bamboo shoots and water chestnuts at the same time (or other veg that you like). Crack some eggs into a bowl and beat together, then drizzle into the boiling soup, stirring around all the time. The eggs will set as kind of raggy, eggy noodles. You can also omit the meat/fish and eggs and chuck in some noodles instead.

DS2 - chick pea and pasta soup

2l veg stock
4 or 5 cups cooked chick peas
2 onions, chopped
a lot of garlic (about 8 - 10 cloves) chopped
half a bag pasta

Fry onions and garlic until beginning to soften. Add chick peas and stock. Simmer 15 minutes or so. BLend until almost smooth but still with some bits of chick pea. Add pasta and simmer 10 minutes or so until pasta is cooked. You might need to add some more stock.

DS3 - clam chowder or carrot, beetroot and orange

4 pints veg stock
2 grated beetroot
5 or 6 grated carrots
2 onions
1/2 pint orange juice
carton cream

Cook everything except cream until soft. Blend until smooth.. Stir in cream and heat through. This is a fab colour

DD - chicken and rice

Chicken stock
couple of onions
couple of leeks
5 or 6 grated carrots
little bit of shredded, cooked chicken
couple of handfuls rice (put in near the end of cooking)

DS4 - tomato and rice

2 tins baked beans
2 tins tomatoes
1 carton of passata
2 onions,

Blend until smooth

Add 2 pints of hot veg stock
1tblspn sugar
1tspn dried herbs

Simmer about 15 mins. You might need to add some more stock if it is too thick. Add some left over cooked rice and heat though. Stir in some milk or cream if you like. DS4 likes this with grated cheese sprinkled over the top.

sjuperwolef · 17/09/2011 15:23

dd refuses all except tomato and sometimes minestrone - as long as its noodles and not pasta in it

ZZZenAgain · 17/09/2011 15:28

tomato soup onlyi f it is blended with chopped up mozzarella. Chicken soup she apparently likes (possibly from reading about it in books?), I always feel my chicken soups don't work out, mushroom soup if it is not all blended and leek and potato

Not keen on unblended vegetable soups but I still make them.

When she was small I threw in some alphabet noodles towards the end and that made her eat them
