KFC - do you think this could be true?

Just received this email:

KFC has been a part of our American traditions formany years. Manypeople, day in and day out, eat at KFC religiously. Do they really know what they are eating? During a recent study of KFC done at the University of New Hampshire, they found some very upsetting facts.

First of all, has
anybody noticed that just recently, the company has changed theirname? Kentucky Fried Chicken has become KFC. Does anybody know why? We thought the real reason was because of the "FRIED" foodissue. IT'SNOT!

The reason why they call it KFC is because they cannot use the word chicken anymore.

Why? KFC does not use real chickens. They actually use genetically manipulated organisms. These so called"chickens" are kept alive by tubes inserted into their bodies to pumpblood and nutrients throughout their structure.

They have no beaks, no feathers, and no feet. Their bone structure is dramatically shrunk to get moremeat out of them. This is great for KFC. Because they do not have to payso much for their production costs. There is no more plucking of the feathers or the removal of the beaks and feet.

The government has told them to change all of their menus so they do not say chicken anywhere. If you lookclosely you will notice this. Listen to their commercials, Iguarantee you will not see or hear the word chicken. I find this matter to bevery disturbing.

I hope people will start to realize this and letother people know. Please forward thismessage to as many people as you can. Together we make KFC start using real chicken again.

lol - tbh I don't know - I ask for 6 in 3 bags of 2! lol. I think it's about £7 for those and the same for the pork chop.

I can honeslty say as well we've never run out of food (might be a bit skimpy but there's always more than enough as well)

I do split the mince/braisin steak (normally get £4 of that) up as well and out of £4 normally get about 5 or 6 portions for 2 of us (a portion is just one big handful for me then I pad it out with mushrooms onions peppers etc or leeks.)

did notice as well I went in and got about £55 worht of meat and he charged me £45 cos I said MIL was visitin so needed more food! lol.

there is a chicken farm behind my parents' house (in belgium), which is run by a neighbour who let us go and have a look into the big hangars where they keep the chicken several times. DD has been inside and i was very happy about her seeing it, as the conditions which they were kept in were very good. the chickens are kept in those hangars (3 of them in total) with between 30 and 40 thousand in each one. there was no sign of any dead ones, crippled ones or top heavy ones (which could lead to things like hock burns if they were lying in the ammonia too long). the soil was keep clean and the smell wasn't bad. this farm showed me that it can be done to keep chickens in big numbers and to have them lead a pretty reasonable life while they are in there. my parents often find ones that escape from the farm and they keep them in their garden, where they get fed on leftovers and maize. they live an very good life there with lots of room to roam and they live until they are old and die.
i don't know why i am sharing this with you. it probably won't make a difference in anyone buying organic or not.

Tis interesting to me munz, lol!

As awful as it may sound lilacbump, hearing something like that makes me feel a bit better about eating it IYSWIM.
I was in tears watching that video about J Crew. People standing and jumping on animals heads, throwing them on the floor, electrocuting them analey (sp, never spelt that before in my life!). It really is distgusting. It makes me incredibly upset and very very angry.

have just seen a kfc ad on telly, the one for the family bucket, with the large family and the mum walks in at the end and is pg. voice over def said the word chicken, it came up in type too, '8 pieces of chicken'

munz · 29/11/2005 19:42

NGB - that's just horrible isn't it. it's terrible.

I hate to think what else they add to the meats at these fast food places.

monkeytrousers · 29/11/2005 20:03

I hate the way they euthanize (gas)the newly hatched male chicks cos they don't produce eggs.

Furball · 29/11/2005 20:07

Could they not raise the for meat instead? Even though from the chickens point of view he probably gets the better option.

I also buy meat from local butchers or very occasionally supermarket organic

munz · 29/11/2005 20:13

do they really? I never knew that - why don't they raise them then for a few years then kill them - surely they'd get more money (farmers view here) to riase them then kill them for the meat?? then just plain slaughter them?

piffle · 29/11/2005 20:13

our local organic farm does beef packs and lamb pack
our beef is £35.oo for 5kgs and it includes blade steak (2 meals -casseroles), braising steak (3 meals - goulash/casseroles/oven curries) 3 pieces of rump steak 1kg of mince and one topside roasting joint which tbh is so enormous I'm waiting for the the 3000 to pop over for dinner before cooking it!
Our local butcher raises his own chickens for his own supply, large outdoor field penned, barned at night. Feed only grains. Only use meds if a bird is ill - his chickens are happy ones, tame as anything too!
We get 30 filleted thighs for £12.00 bargain for the freezer.
I never eat KFC I hate it. It has nothing to recommend it not one good thing about it!

piffle · 29/11/2005 20:13

munz the males fight if kept together, so they kill them to avoid the fighting

starlover · 29/11/2005 20:53

you will also note that here the word chicken is mentioned maynt imes

I am pmsl here because I can't believe anyone would fall for that! lol

TwoIfBySea · 29/11/2005 22:08

sickandtired, for about £5-£6 there are lovely free range chickens in Sainsburys. I don't normally shop there but dst's school is nearby.

I have been amazed that since I started buying free range or organic when budgets allow (not usually chicken as that is a bit expensive for me) how much taste there is! I made a huge batch of scotch broth with everything except the broth mix organic (carrots, leeks etc.) It was lovely, I really noticed that no one added salt or anything to it. I used to think people were talking crap but it is true...taste the difference.

I wouldn't go near KFC after the "rat" hoax, well, you never know! We occasionally have McD or BK but I try to only have either once a month.

TwoIfBySea · 29/11/2005 22:09

Oh and I should also say that there is a lot more chicken meat from free range (does me, dh and dst who are nearly 4, plus enough left over for sandwiches the next day.)

So the bird looks smaller but definitely isn't. Cause it isn't pumped full of water.

"I hate the way they euthanize (gas)the newly hatched male chicks cos they don't produce eggs".

Well to be perfectly honest I might have to do the same when my chickens hatch chicks, since boy chicks grow into cockerels, and with adjacent neighbours I doubt they will appreciate the crowing. Plus would have to keep cockerels separate from their sisters so they don't fertilise their siblings eggs etc. I don't know all that much about it yet but I also suspect several cockerels reared together would fight.

monkeytrousers · 30/11/2005 06:59

Peta are barking, you're right Cod. I thought about joining but they were just so,well, barking!

I'm a veggie HMC, I hate the whole thing if I'm honest.

handlemecarefully · 30/11/2005 09:28

That's fair enough!
